While I don't have any new suggestions...

Quote: "Luxurious room.(Possibly rent a room?)"

I'd like to expand on that. How about implementing a kudos-style system, where instead of gaining "points," one would gain "credits" or perhaps a currency of some sort. Then, charge the "credits" to rent the room.

Naturally, "credits" could be taken away due to foul behavior.

This may be pushing it, but you could make the rooms customizeable, at least remotely. Then, the purpose of the rented room would be for the owner to have his own "forum," at least temporarily. He could choose the topic and be the moderator. Make sense?

It's Not So Hard To Make Rooms Customizable.

Oh And Make A Config File On The Hosts PC!
When Somebody Joins, They Download The File And
Load Thier World Accordingly. All Changes After The Config File Has Loaded Are Applied In Real Time.

The server framework really is 90% done now. The dev team will be testing it later on with an ascii style chat. I imagine their to be something 3d done next week sometime .

The 3d chat is coming...
In the meantime, come in the IRC. Ask me for details!!.

well aside from a few bumps and bruises along the way, we have managed a client-server chat via the DBP Client and Mnem's Java Server app. This was a simple test to prove the concept, now onto the fun stuff - ps dont mind the messed up typing, the keystroke buffer timing is all arsed atm...

We are still open to suggestions, we want the community involved in this as much as possible, because this is the teams contribution to the community. So if you think something would be good, that you havent seen suggested, then suggest away. Bear in mind though that we are not making a game . Games are for the mmorpg!!!!!111 idiots

As for name's, the obvious one would be "DarkCHAT" and would be my first pick.

And i was also reading about the models and stuff and obviously you should also be worried people don't use super high quality textures (I could give a sh*t less about a model being 2500 polys, i'm afraid of a 10mb texture).

But other then that, good to see you guys haven't ran into a corner and cried about this being to hard (yet).

Anyways, You bastards and cows and brits better finish this.

Eric

I almost got the server framework finished, made up a sample protocol for simple messaging client and it actually all worked at the end of the day . GL to other team members who will probably be sleeping too while im away. Ill spend more time on it later .

Oooo, I've got a good name.... I've been pushing the thought of having a picture of a cat anywhere, anywhere at all in the 3D world thing, but maybe you could name it from a cat!

I don't know what you'd name it though.... Maybe name it "Newbie Brogo's Cats", or "Newbie Brogo Rocccks", or maybe "DBC Fanboy all the way"

I'm not too good at thinking up names....

Names:
DarkWorlds
DarkRooms

Ideas:
Perhaps in the future let people set up their own rooms if they sign up for server space or something.

Role playing rooms. Goes with the above idea, people walk around dungeons and there's this guy in the middle shouting.
"You see a monster, please roll a d20!"
"I got 21"
"No you didn't!"
"There's only 20 sides"
"But I get +18"
"How come you get +18?"
"Because I'm a mod"

Participate in the server test

We have put together a small client, that will use the servers simple chat protocol. This isnt a test for the client, its a test for the server and we want to see how many users it can sustain without error.

The client is in vb, so if you need to, download the appropriate runtimes too.

http://chatproj.geehost.com/downloads/

Remember, the final client will be a full 3d environment in dbp, but we will learn methods and resolve errors based upon this test, so get your browsers downloading .

This server test has ended. You are not able to use the clients that are available for download any more due to modified protocol. There is a user database now and requires log in. Also there will be a live user list, so we can see who is logged on. There will be a new client(Hopefully in dbp) that utilise these changes. Please note that this still will only be a test.

"IT's ALIVE!!!!"

Hey all! I'm Back. Have been without a computer for the past three days. My Hard Drive to a "Hard-Dive!". Sounded like a metal fork jammed into a wheels spokes.

Not to worry. I received my replacement Western Digital 120GB HD yesterday, and I am pretty close to being up and operational (after pulling an all night install/update session). Luckily I had everything (all my work and docs, emails etc... at least), backed up onto a DAT! I am at work right now, so I don't have time to read the thread. I have a couple of apps to install, and I will be On-line tonight. I'll catch up with all that has transpired.

Good to be back. Hope ya missed me a little.

Ok, the updated version of the chat protocol is done. Although it is still unavaliable for testing due to lack of client application, it has been tested and works.

New features include:-
Members database
User lists
Kicking users
Flood protection

Oh, when you register now, your passwords are stored as md5 digests, so nobody can resolve them, in case you were worried.

Model specifications are going to be very very soon for those of you interested in creating models for this project. Just need to get a few things in order on my 3D part.

Aside from initial dbp client tests that were ok, I am waiting on 3 key ingredients from the other client developers before I can put together a stable dbp client demo for the community. Depending on when I have these items that could be as soon as today or tomorrow, but I cant say for sure. I have been devoting all of my free time to this effort but sadly dont have much to show yet from the dbp client perspective - Although I have been keeping myself busy with a vb.net client that works with mnemonix's server protocol, thats been, erm, fun.

Hopefully we have a dbp client soon.
