Okay sorry if it seems like i'm acting like a kindergardener...yeah, and this is a 9th grade english honors class I'm in... listen to this

A week or two ago our class started reading of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. It seemed like a really great book, and I thought "Gosh, what a shame it is reading this in class, it's going to be spoilt by all the stupid analysis that we have to do on it. Oh well, it can't be THAT bad." Well, turns out that I was wrong. Every 10 pages, we had to do a one page analysis/report type thing, and it was a bloody pain in the @$$. So, its about a month into school, and we've covered around, maybe 80 pages (the first 4 chapters). This was last Thursday. Then Friday, we come into class, and find out there's a POP 60 point test ON THE BOOK. ITS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!!! It's fiction, for crying out loud! AND SHE'S TESTING US ON IT? THIS IS TOTAL BS! But, you haven't heard the half of it. I was like "okay, wow, this REALLY sucks, but it can't be that hard.." OMG! SHE ASKED FOR THE SMALLEST DETAILS SO TINY THAT IT WASN'T EVEN FUNNY! So in the book, this guy called George, he's just moved into this bunk-house type place, and he finds a can of some sort of bug killer on the bedside table. and in the book he just read to himself what the label said. ON THE TEST, SHE ASKED WHAT THE LABEL SAID! Is that stupid or what!!!! I got a C on in, practically everyone got D's and F's. Brought my grade down 13 percent. I had a 100% in the class, now I have a B.

Sorry if this seems like a rant, it is, I just needed to blow some steam. What do you guys think? And mods, you can delete this, I dont really care, again, just needed to blow some steam.

School is school, teachers do that. Now at least you know what the teacher is like, so make sure your always prepared. Some teachers are known to throw in pop-quizzes, so always be prepared. Just read sparknotes for the book every night, it helps a LOT.

its not the book that sucks, the book is great, i like it. its just that she tested us on some TINY details. Why the hell get tested on it any!!?!??! ARGHH

You mean that you don't like reading in to the details of Lenny and how much he likes his beans with ketchup? Back in the day I think I had to read that book at least 4 times in different grades, teachers must really like that story.

No no no. I like the details, theyre fine, its just that HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO MEMORIZE ALL THE DETIALS????? you know how descriptive of a writer steinbeck is, lots of details, but why are we tested on themmmmmmm

I hate of Mice & Men, it's soooo, boring. The stroy goes something like this: Guys want job, Guys get job, Guy 1 kills a girl, Guy 2 kills Guy 1. THE END.

But I see what you mean about that teacher, I have this one teacher, she's a french math teacher, but she talks with an english accent(AAAAHHHHHHH!) HER VOCALBULARY IS FILLED WITH ANGLISIMS AND PLAIN BAD GRAMMAR!!! Maybe it just pisses me off especially, beacause I'm taking another math in english, and this was SUPPOSED to be my french math course .

Walk up to your english teacher, and say, what are your views on [insert really complicated rocket scientist english/grammar type stuff].

Or you could just walk up to her and ask what was [some rediculously small detail like the label] again? See if she can answer that, and paste a huge F on here forehead!!!! Ugh, I hate teahcers like that, give 'em a piece of their own medicine.

Quick question, but what does the can say?

I read that book as part of 1st Year (year 7 i think they call it now), and what our english teacher did was help to point out relivant points within the book.

while i don't understand why text like Shakespear is learnt in school (the literary texts are like jerry springer episodes but in 17th century dialect which aparently makes it something special)... but this book, it is one of 3 i recall reading and it made me think about the characters involved.

problem is the book is short, but laced with detail. if you've ever heard hitchcock talk about his films, that book is exactly hitchcock's style.
what might seem the most important and obvious thing shown, is there to give the story structure... but it isn't actually important, what is, are the details that surround an event.

bah, i'm going back a good 13years here so i can't remember much about the book apart from the overview of the plot.

School favours those with better memories btw, simple fact is your not so much taught alot of things, but given things your suppose to remember.
I mean like Mathematics, your taught how a few things works... but you also have alot of mnemonix in order to remember alot of equasions to do what you want.

History is purely remembering useless facts and date, and unfortunately less about understanding civilizations that have passed before.

just a fact of school, i'm surprised it has taken an 'honour roll' student so long to figure that out.

In other word, aslong as you stay in the honors program, you will be tested upon the smallest details. Your reading comprehension is supposed to be "above Average".

And of Mice and Men, Because the way Stienbeck rights, you will get questions such as:

It is because he describes everything.

Oh and if your bitching about this, wait till the next sememster (might be next year, can't remember) when you get to read "Antigone", you'll just love the questions in that. Then you can look foward to the rest of HS going through "Julius Ceaser", then "The grapes of Wrath", followed by a Makeveli classic "The Prince", and topped off in the senior year of "Hamlet". All of them having there own distinct writing style. You can also throw in "Romeo and Juliet" somewhere into the mix, i forgot when they make you sheep read that.

So get used to it.

Edit: Lord of the flies is also 12th grade year too. Forgot about that one.

It must be really different in other countries, because our schooling requires us to apply what we've learned. Most of our exams permit a 'Cheat Sheet' which we can write down Mathematical Formulae, information and basically anything we want. Over here, memory has absolutely nothing to do with school. We're never asked facts, we're tested on case studies and what we'd do in the situation, applying theory to real-world situations.

Yep. Damn Exeat, now in my opinion thats really what school should be, not about memorizing, but about using logic. Granted you wouldnt exactly have to study a whole lot, cuz here studying is basically memorizing (studying for a history test, memorizing dates, studying for english test, memorizing vocabulary, studying math, memorizing formulae, etc)

It doesn't matter if it is fact or fiction. You are being tested to see how well you pay attention to details given to you. This will help you. School is about more than logic. Or at least it should be. Basically our school system is just about doing homework. You can fail every test and if you have a 100 homework average, 100 classwork average, and at least a 40 test average you will pass with a 70. Now that is stupid. The only grades that should count are tests. IMO if you can't pass the test ... you didn't learn. If you didn't learn ... you should not pass. I mean come on, you can miss 30% of the questions and still pass. And no Grammer was not my strong subject I passed with a 70. Sorry for errors.

English Literature is totally subjective, and a waste of time IMHO.

To illustrate, I got a B in English Lit, and never read a single book. I hated it, and just read a couple of paragraphs for each assignment. I obviously had the same subjective outlook as the teacher, and so passed quite comfortably. I managed to talk about character progression by reading small, out of context snippets. Fantastic!

Its a common perception that some of the literary greats such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, etc., are utterly irrelevant and pointless for the modern world. All this does is just demonstrate that the propounder of that view has been the unfortunate victim of a poor teacher. All of the literary classics are timeless and deal with the fundamental issues inherent in the human condition.

Pfft, you guys are all whiners. They teach you english like that so you can read and write. You need to remember to look for detail in anything you read. Is it just not that obvious? That's what she's teaching you, look for detail.

The classics are also relevent to todays world. Romeo and Juliet? Haven't you seen the movie set in the modern times? What was the guys name? Leanardo DcCaprio or something like that. It was an awful movie, but not because of the story Anyway, after you've studied it, it also improves your reading and writing.

For anyone here who has read "Educating Rita", its not a literary classic, but it does bring up an interesting point. Does this kind of in-depth analysis improve or inhibit your ability to just enjoy the book?

Yeah, it probably is Exeat.
Alot of the UK/US Education system is just screwed up entirely.

The system puts far too much pressure and work on the shoulders of teachers, and after a few years of having to make sure idiots know certain things rather than understanding them you can see why alot of teachers seem to loose that pazzaz they have when they're newbies.

I think it does both, in a way. I find it rather annoying how many 'classics' are forced upon children whether they like them or not. You can be an intelligent reader without enjoying 'classics'. Not to say I don't enjoy reading Shakespeare, Chaucer, etc-- it's the "modern classics" I really can't stand-- but I don't think we should be enforcing tastes in schools. IMHO English would be taught far, far better if students were allowed to choose their own works (and have them approved by teachers for being at the reading level of the class, of course), or at least choose from a rather large list.

I doubt I would enjoy reading shakesphere under any circumstances.

I read "Educating Rita" but the only bit I can remember that Michael Caine was in the film and the women knocking through the wall in the flat with a hammer.

Thats because you read books, at least I assume you do. Most kids don't and asking them to select a book is asking for trouble. It would also be pretty difficult to teach the class if everyone has a different book. The teacher would have to know somthing about each book.

just think, kids in like 100years time might be forced to read the scripts of Star Wars as some 'epic tale of good vs evil' which would be echoed with the history of this period.

might seem an odd thing to say, but after all that's what this is really. Plays were just the Films of thier day... i like the Matrix and all, very good film, not sure i'd like to have to analyze the sodding script though.

I remember a few essays I wrote on Shakespeare, there is an awful lot to write about, but despite the technical brilliance of some of the work, I find the end result to be less than the sum of the parts.

I can imagine in 200 years time having our music being considered classical and being played by an elite group of pupils who recieve tuition on their £1000 electric guitars.

Imagine, in the albert hall:

"And now ladies and gentlemen, the band will play a deligthful turn of the century piece called Clocks, composed nad first performed by a late 1990s group called Coldplay."


Lol, I'd love to see what pupils in 100 years time make of our cinema and films - they'd probably be bored stiff.

I always preferred his comedies to his tragedies. But that might be because try as I do, it's hard to take the archaic dialect seriously ...

i imagine it is, but i think its easier to take the romatic bits seriously, it just works better than plain english, thats why ppl use french, even if they're english, its more romantic (allegedly)

they're not giving you the books to read for enjoyment. It's work. Say you worked for amazon, and they wanted opinions, like on all of their books. You need to be able to read fast, and to read accurately. You can't learn to pick out minute detail by simply reading over the book as you would normally do for enjoyment, it'd be far too slow and you wouldn't remember detail. You need to know how to look for things, and to do it quickly.

Unless, of course, you wanted to write a review like::

It was a great book. .. The main character.. John or whatever, ate this food... forgot what it was...

Of course, your teachers aren't teaching you this so you can work at amazon, but so you can apply your knowledge to whatever you may need. Perhaps you need to read a 1000 page manual within a two week period. Good luck if you've only ever been tought to read on a casual bases
