In terms of what?
There are a number of artists on here, it would be hard to judge anyone being 'the best' normally. Let alone trying to judge them based on memory given most of the better artists haven't shown work on here in over 2-3years.

Well...?
You have a huge selection of modelers and as I've said most don't post here often, definately most of then haven't posted any work in atleast a year if not longer.

The people currently on the site (that no doubt you know as modelers) are only a fraction of those who have done it in the past.

So you need to set some guidelines to what qualifies for your little "hall of fame".

depends for character modelling id say sir manfred allways produced very impressive work, and froggermon is good at the guns and statics and things, psionic is also very telented as was simple before he ran away and for good cause .

and ravens right most of the 'best' modellers dont posts on these boards very often.

I agree on Dark Coder, the best don't really post on here, they get more helpful comments else wbere, sspike for example. But if wanna go for regulars, then STALKER could be called best, I love one of AZP's models on his website, if he was able to keep the standard on his other work, well I'd say him, and well I don't care who is the best, because we all still have a long way to go, and well its not who's best, its that we improve, I generally judge the best by rate of improvement rather than quality of models.....so the most recent improvement is BenD, but well its kinda hard to judge that sort of idea.....sooo I don't care, (PS i'm not saying BenD is the fastest improver....I dunno who is)

I dont think we should turn the 3d modler forums into picking a dodgeball team. If you pick out a single modler as the best the rest may get discoraged, so I say you are all excelent for bringing a bunch of polygons to life.

I discriminate against discriminating people....

I agree, although I did say I think sspike is the best outta what I've seen, but he's had a lot more experience, which led to me saying how the best modeller would be judged by progress and not quality.....and well you are right about not saying honestly who you think is best, as well I do not know who I think is the best, I only think sspike is best with quality...

@BenD, I think its the same one, send us the link I looked back about 12 pages, and well I wasn't gonna go thorough in searching, so I'm not gonna check them again lol

In terms of art, I don't think there can be a "best". Raven, Acturas, Froggermon, and Johnny Ree are among some of the top though. Then there's also Simon(from TGC) who's done a good job with the darkmatter models. There's tons of promising 3D artists around here too as well.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

@MikeS, no one is the best, not fair to say as others have had more experience.
@BenD I've never seen raven's stuff either, a friend said the work he has seen is not so good, and well raven be fair and give us you latest screenie so we can judge you I mean comppliment you well actually I'm just curious, as you complained on our criticism on here, I know how to be stronger on my crit if thats what you want us to do on it (i'm just light on here because I don't believe many come for that kinda crit, they want 'thats nice, keep it up, it would look even better if you did that and your model looks good' rather than 'hmm yes its a good model for your stage, but still have somewhere to go, you need to add some detail to that, ooh I think that can be straigten out, and the geometry is a big odd there, fix that, otherwise you done alright '

SO RAVEN PLEASE POST SOMETHING

no.....you took that wrong, when I'm criticising I look at the model at a differant perspective, like say, um I'll pick on um....hmmm....I'll use one of my models as an example, my woman that looked like micheal jackson.

When commenting I would look at it as the modeller and not the model, well (when I say I think the model looks good I mean it), and would think this
'The model looks good and low poly, a few problems, but they just got the hang of it, the hair looks micheal jackson, like that looks good, oh wait they ripped that from a model'
then I would say
'Looks good, shes micheal JACKSON!!!, well I see you understand on how heads are modelled, keep it up, now you got the principle, you can learn how to make it much nicer, cool!'

as for when criticising it, I look at the model only, and well I'm not gonna waste space with my thoughts and what I would say, but it would just say how the model would be improved and not saying neccersarily what I think is good about it, I always mean what I say, unless I'm being cocky or sarcastic or joking or something like that

O ok just making sure.

I almost always say I like their model. Cause peoples models usually have a good side to them. but sometimes I find one I really like then I just nicely say just keep working on it and youll get it or something like that. I wanted to make sure you mean your one of the reasons Im still doing this and trying to get better(cause of the guitar thread if you remember.) and my friend is another reason hes always supporting me. Thats why I think everyone should be positive in their crits yet helpful.

i agree i never found someone saying the model is nice helped me at all but most people tend to say that regardless,

and i disagree with a better modeller is someone who can learn faster, although a quick lerner is an asset its not the only factor that defines a good modeller you must also consider where there skills are best in, do they have a good attention span as some model can take forever, there rendering abilitys/knowledge, highpoly/lowpoly modelling, animation, uv mapping, skinning, teamwork, can do work by a set deadline etc etc etc, i believe that these factors and many more are used to judge a modeller, aswell as the quality of the finished product, so your theory of how quickly they can learn isnt true for all circumstances :p.

okay I see DC, but the reason for me looking more at ability to pick up modelling yadayada is just to emphasise you can't really judge peoples work by how good it looks, and well I shouldn't have been too biased to aspect of the modeller learning abilities, like person X on forum Y (not fair to name names, so I won't) 3DS max user, got a degree, people would say wow here, but I say, looks awesome, yes, but he/she's got a degree, and well I'd expect it to look more proportinate than that, a bit of a disapointment with all thats high detail, as for I'll use Aaron the modeller in this example, his first model, a bunch of primitives, second I thought wow he's getting good at this, not a great model, but its pretty nice. And well to add, who cares how we would judge it, because I'm not judging who's best!!!

@BenDstraw, uhuh, true, of course I think nice comments always should come with friendly criticism, so its helpful and gives em confidence (I've been lacking the criticism bit lately)

I agree to Seppuku Geijutsu...
No one is the best, as long as you model what you want and you are satisfied with that finished model.
Art has many categories, so we can't judge someone who's better.
Like he said, some take online schools or buy expensive books to improve themselves, and some are doing self-learning method. (I'm one of them)
Although, some are fast learners... Even if a person who attend schools/read books, but if he/she is having difficulties of applying the techniques, it'll take him/her years to be a pro... (I've learned 3dsmax for about 2-5 months and trained myself with simple tutorials for 6-8 months, and here i am, minimal improvements )

Hear to Seppuku Geijutsu!!!

All projects have been cancelled due to some important matters (darn it!) but "The mask of Zorah" is still continued...

@Raven, shame you can't show em, well ye can't expect every modeller to post their work, but I'm curious to why you can't, I'm sure its not that bad, I guess I'll flick back on old threads to answer me own questions as you implied that there are thread explaining it, I have been around long enough, just not hung around here long enough lol

Well from the looks of that thread someone posted back there, Mach does some good high-poly work. Has anyone maybe thought they should see some of his low-poly work first before you go labelling him as the best above others?

(Ofcourse, nothing personal with Mach. His model is great)

It isn't a case of can't, but refuse to.
Although the main protagonist is now gone (and discredited), I still do not feel like showing my work on here anymore.

If I recall correctly, the last peice I personally posted up was a Shotgun I made the community. Probably about a year ago, I only released it because friends said that it would help spark off other artists to start posting again.

No one seemed to even care. Every other damn artist on this forum can expect to see comments like 'OMFG! That's the best thing I've ever seen.'

Only comments I can expect are from those who don't like me making snide remarks. Before that I'd just stopped showing work since what happened when I was working with Randy on her game.

People not only tore my work apart, but they started attacking everyone associated with me. They ran Randy out of the forum, hell they upset her so much she stopped programming full-stop.

Sorry, but if that's the sort of recieption that I can expect whenever my work is posted people can just go to hell for all I care.

http://www.rstudio.co.uk/public/coredesign/wip008.large.jpg

if you *really* want to see something, then that is a recent wip.
It's nothing special, but it's work. To be honest I absolutely hate it so far.

@ Raven,
[edit]
a friend just told me about all this, so i'm changing what I said, I think the reason 'people are against you' is because you give em a reason to be, lighten up and not let them have a reason and they'll leave you alone and treat you as an equal, I've known people to be extreme on here but not extreme enough to attack people who are friends with someone they're annoyed with

[Edit 2}
gun looks good, needs the odd improving, I don't hate it, but well the artist likes there work then looks at it, then hates it, like I do with my stuff, I though 'wow sephiroth is coming on awesomely, now I looked at it, and say, I'm not as good as I though, he sucks!'

Raven ive got to agree with seppuku you have to lighten up you are most definitly (judging from your screen shot)a very good modeller but with all the knowledge you have you are very harsh about the way you present it. I can also see what you mean by a harsh tone means that it encourages you more and that you will strive to prove the person who told you "kind words of critisim" wrong but if you are constantly told your model has flaws then it puts you off after a while. Although you want to deliver your words of critisim you have to atleast once in a while congratulate a person on there efforts.

As for people attacking you and your friends well to be honest their just scum and dont deserve to be apart of this forum if that is the case.

As for your gun i like i but hey i like guns....well modelling them. lol it looks ok if you ask me.

Yes, I'm sure your "friend" understands all of the facts too.
Tell ya what, how about you actually go back to the earliest forum posts and see just how much of a reason I gave people back then.

Fine you think I'm a Jerk now who does nothing but give people reason to hate me. Fact is you can't make someone hate you, they do that on thier own. How you act upon that hatred is your own option.

I hate a number of people right now, all from this commmunity. I don't hate people easily either.

Yet how often do you see me actually attacking them. How often do you see me putting them down each and every damn time they post something. How often do you see me using past events in any argument I'm in just to try and be nasty?

You won't see that because despite me being an opinionated, I'm not a nasty person. Most peoples view of me aren't thier own, they're other peoples.

Next time you think of how my attitude around here might be a lil out of line, just think what you've seen in the past year... is a fraction of the crap I've had thrown at me for over 3years. So yeah forgive me if I'm not just a smidge bitter about how this community treats me.

I never said that or tried to imply that, I don't think you're a jerk, from my friend and logic I got the impression you must of said or done something, whether its just or unjust for how they reacted, I'm just saying the motive I was told is what it is, then well, maybe you could lighten up and not say anything that may offend or annoy, it was a dig at you, it was a suggestion from my point of view, I'll look back on your post and see whats been said also, I was told you were almost banned, and well I guess to be nosy I'll look around and maybe find whats wrong and maybe sort it out, as no has seemed tried to.

And well making people hate you will have a motive, people I know on here are far from prejudiced from what I've gathered, and well I'll guess I'll see whats been said in earlier posts

[Edit]
I know whats its like having a conspiracy against ya in a communtiy, I went to school, I am a one of a kind, and well being a school full of chavs, ooooh I shouldda started the school where more moshers go to

*sneeze* damn cold, well now that weve cleard it up that raven doesnt repeatedly attack people by repeatedly calling them iditos now we can move on .

and is it me or does every topic that raven posts in drastically goes off topic

besides the community used to be alot worse against you

im not sure i remember the community attacking any of your friends/co workers perhaps they were poking fun at one of your supposed projects that magically dissapeared? but i hardly doubt we would attack someone just for working with you.
