Ive been rather quiet since the release of model pack 5 and haven't posted much work but for quite a while i have been working on a free weapon model for you guys simply because i obviously need practice to "compete" nowadays.

I'll say in advance that the weapon isn't completely ready RIGHT NOW only due to one minor annoyance, this being the tween in the animations of the empty shell casing being projected, it seems to come back to the gun straight afterwards. the current version however is still available for download.

here are some screenshots, you'll notice Ive been testing with FPSC's shaders, as limited as they may be, they still produce a nice effect.

just a very basic normal map, generated in photoshop and given a little more height and less grain in Crazy-Bump beta.

here is a 6MB video showing the weapons animations:

http://www.redcore3d.com/uploads/elite2.wmv

no sound, sorry, must be my retarded speakers...

you'll also notice Ive discovered how to use bones successfully when it comes to weapon animation, it included quite a random phase with the biped and physique but came out great

this free weapon is to be accompanied by a DUAL WIELD version, which i am in the process of animating, i shall mention now, that the 'select' animation of it so far is very slick

i also plan to make a couple more free weapons when the time is right, but i have much work to catch up on, those interested in progress on the fantasy pack, i will be working on the high res models very soon, having just bought a laptop capable of displaying the normal maps in real-time.

though the progress may be slowed down a tad due to an opportunity that has risen, where i might have the chance to work on my first shipped title, so we'll see how this works out...

enough mindless chit chat, here is the download link:

http://files.filefront.com/berettaelite2zip/;6513473;;/fileinfo.html

no charge, but I'm open to any donations if your feeling generous, Ha

any self respecting FPSC user should know where to put the files, if not, simply copy the folder inside the ZIP into one of the sections of your 'guns' folder located in files/gamecore/

enjoy! (it works best with shaders!)

EDIT:

UPDATE, ALL PROBLEMS FIXED

Download link below, read my post on Page 3 for more info

You...are...a...GOD!!!

I don't care what anybody else says, you are the best weapon and model creator on these forums.

I have been trying to get into creating media for FPSC for a while now. I was actually inspired by you back when model pack 5 was still Core Pak 2. Do you have any tips or suggestions for a newbie modeller and texturer?

EDIT: Yay! First Download!

thank you

i don't consider myself a professional but all i can say, is to take your time and constantly practice, it has become quite obvious to me that tutorials only go so far, monkey see, monkey do (me being the monkey, errant being..the thing im looking at)

Quote: "Would it be possible to post the max, or 3DS file etc? I may drop you an email, sometime soon..."

sure thing, once Ive sorted out some things I'll post the .MAX file and perhaps the .PSD's

thanks for your support, with much work at the moment i cant say I'll be working on any weapon packs for a while.

the fantasy pack has already peaked my interest for a long while.

Quote: "Great weapon...... better hands. WOW!"

hehe, thanks, im glad Ive found out how to suss bones for this, made a massive improvement

Quote: "Can I use the crosshair for my non commercial game?"

you can use the crosshair and the weapon for commercial and non-commercial free of charge, you can credit or simply link to my website if you want to.

thanks locrian, if anyone else wants to see the development stages of this model from the beginning (mainly texturing progress is shown) you can visit the thread on errants forum:

thanks, speaking of companies, i (shamefully) took a random shot at applying for a contract position at bungie (a bit soon! lol) and although they've only just mentioned that its an on-site position, their modeling test seems pretty easy. i might have to try some other companies but with in-house opportunities and see what other tests are like

Jon, you are really cool - this is the best hand gun I've seen since MP5's Deagle, which I can remember you made along with all the other weapons which are just the best, and so are you. Well done duude!

Downloading now, this is uber funkeh! L337!

EDIT: do you mind if I retexture it, give it a new muzzleflash and post it back on this thread?

Btw, I posted a cooly screeny with a cooly name. Just to show it works on mine.
Jon, I noticed the anim glitch - the shell goes out then kinda goes back in again. Is that what you were talking about?

I have to say, the modeling on this looks much better than what you did with your weapon pack, you are getting better and better each time you produce some thing.

But maybe like you said, cant remember what it was from the top post, but the brass ejection needs to be fixed and the reload animation, as it looks as if you have a few skiped frames.

Dude I dont know if its still on there, but I noticed there was an open oppurtunity for a designer at Eidos - Makers of Tomb Raider, for example.

http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/corporate/jobs_advices.html

Info on the jobs, and the available vacancies are at the bottom... Might be worth a look. The only problem is that most of them say "You must have at least a year of experience..." - How's that possible if it's your first job?!
Hope this helps out a wee bit,
Dan.

PS. Thanks for the .MAX psds etc if they get up

dont extract the files, extract the folder containing the files, so it should be:

gamecore/guns/user/beretta elite 2/

oh, i forgot about the pickup, i'll get working on that...

i think it'd be better if i released those characters in .3ds format and let someone else rig them if they want, i simply dont have the time for that right now. the largest reason for making this and giving it away was because i intended for it to be a part of my portfolio aswell. simply put, rigging those old characters would be a waste of valuable time. sorry to the people who still think they're good but i have more important things on my hands.

Just noticed this thread, that is one nice gun! So, I didn't quite understand, did you use bones/skin with this model? Because later you mentioned biped and physique.

I think I might know the cause of the animation problem. Did you "bracket" your animation sequence? That might be causing the problem you describe. Double the beginning and ending animation frames for each animation segment to "bracket" them. The TCB controller in max can cause problems when a segment of the animation loops if you don't do this. The "continuity" part of the TCB controller might be causing the shell to come back to where it started....

And that is also why the "idle" animation for the characters in FPSC is jerky, it isn't bracketed properly.

AMAZING! Your guns were great before, but now they look like errant's! This is amazingly incredibly sweeeet! The textures are far inproved! The anamation is great! And the new hands make my jaw drop. If there is any other way to thank you please tell me!!!

thanks guys.

@ bond1

i actually cloned the arm off the biped, re-linked the hierarchy and used physique.

i dont really have a clue how to 'bracket' my animations, and i dont understand what you mean by doubling the start and end frames, care to elaborate?

Ok let me elaborate a little. Max uses a TCB controller to tween its keyframes for biped, it stands for Tension-Continuity-Bias. The continuity part can cause problems for a game animation set.

Normally you would clone the beginning and ending keyframes if you wanted an animation segment to start and end at the same place, right? You would expect a perfectly smooth looping segment, but unfortunately this isn't the case if there are any additional keyframes before or after your segment.

A quick way to fix this is to double the keyframes at the beginning and end of each looping "segment". For example, if your reload animation starts at frame 93 and ends at 125, clone an additional key from frame 93 to 92, and clone an additional key from frame 125 to 126. You would still define your animation as 93-125, but those 2 additional keys act as buffers to fix any TCB screwiness. This practice is called bracketing the animation.

You don't notice any problems most of the time because the TCB screwiness only affects certain animations, usually short segments, or segments that have little movement (like the FPSC idle animation).

I'm pretty sure that Max9 has switched from using TCB controllers to a Euler controller, which I hear is making animators very happy.
