My Egyptian character pack been released as official Model Pack 17! You can purchase it now here: http://www.fpscreator.com/pack17.html

Here are some X9 preview videos of a handful of the characters in action, I love the second encounter! And pics of all 30 characters. I'll post an X10 video preview next week.

High-def version, 100mb:
http://www.hyrumark.com/egyptianpreviewHD.zip

DVD-quality version, 50mb:
http://www.hyrumark.com/egyptianpreviewDVD.zip

Lower-res version, 20mb:
http://www.hyrumark.com/egyptianpreviewLOW.zip

Features of the pack:

*30 new characters, with 31 all-new animations in addition to the standard animations.
*Melee attacking, featuring bona-fide "hit frames", so that damage is only dealt to the player when appropriate.
*Characters react to being shot, and will change their behavior depending on how much damage they take.
*Decoy characters (living statues) that only come alive when the player gets close - see video preview

Some pics, these aren't just beauty renders, they are actual frames of the new animations.

I would have thought X10 would have had its own melee attack system coded in. It seems you are using your melee script from X9, Bond. I just think it spoils a fight, as the character can be hitting you but you receive no damage. I think they should have made a melee firespot, which you attach to a melee weapon and when it hits you, it deals damage. Maybe it's some thing lee should look into.

I like it, but the death animation is getting annoying seeing it every time a character dies

Excellent modelling. I will definitely buy it. The bad part is that it's making me hungry for more. What will be your encore?

@ Higgins
Couldn't agree with you more. It seems that a lot of people are looking to incorporate melee. I'd love to see melee with martial arts action.

The best part of the video is when the character gets really pissed, and starts running at you instead of walking - nice work! This will be a must-buy for me.

Thanks for the comments!

Just to clarify, this video is from X9. X10 will have some enhancements, for example, damage can be dealth out on a specific animation frame for more natural looking melee. Of course there will be ragdoll death (that looks really great on these), but characters will also drop their melee weapons when they die, and sometimes will spin across the floor, very realistic!

About this script: it's much more advanced than the model pack 4 script. There is a buffer between when the melee animation kicks in, and when damage is dealt. So the character will TRY and swing at you but that doesn't always mean he's close enough to hit you, and gives you an opportunity to escape before taking damage.
And they'll no longer just stand right in front of you doing nothing.

I'm also proud of the script because of the gameplay it introduces. Do you conserve ammo and simply run away from the enemy when he's slow moving? Because once he's pissed off, there's no escaping!

There will be several variations on the script too, some characters, like the mummies will always be slow moving, while others will always be fast moving.

I'm very close to finishing the X9 version of the pack, I could have it done in a matter of days. The X10 version might be a week or so later.

I'll probably release the bipeds in the same manner as the ones from Model Pack 4, but I haven't totally made my mind up yet. Quite a bit more work went into these new ones. Wait till you see the mummy's jaw drop to his chest and he takes a chomp at you.

Is there any chance you will show them in X10? It would be great to see them with ragdoll and 20 mumies running after you.

The model looks absolutely fantastic!! Just wondering about the damage to the player. It seems that damage is being done to the player before the creature swings the sword. Outside of that this is one of the best animated models I have seen for FPSC. Great Job!!!

Oh, I've been watching that thread for some time now, and I've known that they were normal mapped. Just wanted to know if your newer ones (like the one shown in the video) would still be normal mapped as well.

And here is Cleopatra's animations, now with 20% more jiggling! She has a much more civilized melee attack, she is a queen after all, until she gets mad, then she'll come at you like a crazy ex-girlfriend.

She looks great! You should add a crazy scream when she gets mad, that would make it way more scary.

Keep up the good work

[Edit] Will we be able to choose what weapon they will use or is the knifes in the model?

Well I decided to improve the melee script even further, and now I think it's pretty fantastic. Now, damage is dealt separately from the melee animation, giving the characters time to "wind up" before actually hitting you. It's much better than the "all or nothing" system I used before. It looks better and also feels better from a gameplay standpoint.

Take a look for yourself, and also see the animation set for the pharaoh's bodyguard character:

I should have the X9 version of this pack sent off to TGC in the next couple of days. X10 version will come perhaps a week or so later.

@bond1

Just wanted to let you know that I'm very impressed with the jurking animations on your egyptian characters. I've been asking TGC to add this for the longest. It looks very realistic besides just having enemies keep coming at while shooting them and never flinching. All in all very innovative. You must have created some type of event scripting for when characters get hit. Definately look forward to getting this pack when it comes out. Is it possible to create a jurk everytime while they are being shot besides every few shots?

bsgamemaker:
The jerk animtion is meant to be a "one-off" animation, that I wanted to serve 2 purposes: First, to give the player a visual clue that your shots are doing some damage. Two, to give the player a chance to run away if they choose. The animation is about 2 seconds, which is long in video game time. Long to enough to run into another room and close the door, for example. It wouldn't look right if the animation played after every shot, especially if you're wielding a machine gun. But you can change the number of shots that will trigger the animation by altering the script.

That said, each character has their own variation on the script so that no two behave exactly the same way. For example, a couple of characters look like gold or copper statues, and look like they are static entities. They don't come alive until the player gets very close. Coupled with their intro animation and a nice loud roar, the effect is pretty awesome. Same for the mummy characters, some will stand there with their arms crossed on their chest, until you get close and they are awakened, when their mouths drop open it's really creepy.

A lot of detail is going into this pack to make it easy to use and fool-proof. For example, the characters are automatically placed a few feet above the floor in the editor, to avoid them getting stuck in certain segments, it just saves you from having to right click on each character and doing the whole "pageup/pagedown" trick for every character you place. I think you'll really like it.

All characters will come in two versions:

1. Melee - with fixed melee weapons that cannot be changed - they are part of the model - Mummies will use their hands (and jaws!) to attack

2. Regular versions that are used like any other FPSC character, and can hold any weapon

I'm really just finishing things up, and once I get the pack off to TGC in the next few days (hopefully), it's up to them when to release it, I don't know how busy they are right now, if it's not before X-Mas than I would think it would be shortly after.

And here is the mummy's animations. Lots of mouth movement and slashing - he doesn't come alive until you get very close, but this can be changed in the script if you don't like that behavior:

Right click "save as":
http://www.hyrumark.com/mummymeleeHD.wmv

Shorter video, but has a nice big closeup of the intro animation, and some fast and furious melee action:

Sound effect are stock sounds, I will have to record my own for the final release.
