I suppose big businesses would pay more because they can afford more.
Cheaper than paying their employees to make em...

When you concider modelling packages like Maya, 3DS Max and Softimage XSI cost in excess of 7000$ for the full retail versions, it begins to make sense.

What RUCCUS said...also remember that there are people that do this as a profession to make a living, not just for fun. If it takes 3 workdays to make a particular model, then you can't expect a modeller to charge $2.00 for it and still support themselves. An employer would be paying their 3 days's salary in addition to any benefits. And you can buy many quality models from Turbosquid for significantly less than what it would cost to pay a person's 3 day salary.

I'd expect to pay $300-$400 for a custom made animated model. I'd expect to pay around $20 for a stock model.

I never buy models, and probably never will. It's just cheaper for me (and probably most everyone else) to make the models themselves.

Really? A few sales and that would justify the purchase of the modeling software! I got gameSpace because the games I'll be making in DBP once I've got 3D mastered will sell a lot more copies if they're models rather than cubes. (If they were cubes, they probably wouldn't sell at all.) But $300-$400 per model per customer makes sounds very profitable. It makes it sound strange that games are being sold for $20-$50 when they contain models worth thousands in combined value.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons...for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

Except for the fact that he'd have to learn how to model it as well and invest his own time into it, which takes away time from the game.

Keep in mind the word "custom". Paying a freelancer for a custom model that you would have exclusively is going to cost a lot more. You would typically be paying by the hour. Now a model pack that is sold in high volume is a different story. Price per model is going to be a lot cheaper, at the expense of having models that everyone else has.

Doesn't sound strange at all if it's a custom model. Just like in your example, selling a few copies of the game would recoup the cost of the models. And time IS money. If you can be working on other things while the models are being made, then you can release the game quicker, therefore generating profit on it sooner.

I do a lot of modeling myself, but paying some money for a high quality model is totally worth it to me.

Like this fellow, another Psionic masterpiece...

I stuck his shield on him backwards, forgive me

I'm good, but not that good. In the time I'd have spent working on his ugly little brother, I've accomplished a lot of other stuff.
