THANKS TO XPLOSYS FOR UPLOADING A COPY OF UMBRA: http://download.fpsfree.com/n79q24t66ks8/demos/umbra.exe

The entire competition is based off of this game, which is why I have added to the rules that you must have played Umbra to participate

Yet another FPSC competition arrives I think you'll all find this one interesting. I present to you...

MIND-TRIX

The objective is to build a 1 level game using any version of FPSC/Mod. The entry will be judged mainly on its ability to "scare" the player through the use of Mind Tricks and Audio etc.

An example game would be Umbra (link above).Umbra uses audio and flashback scenes to scare the player without the typical gore and "objects falling from above". This gave the game a very creepy atmosphere, and that is why it is still my favourite FPSC game of all time. If you still don't understand what I'm getting at, the films "The Ring" and "1408" should give you a pretty good idea . If you would like to enter the competition, but have not played Umbra, I strongly suggest you do so.

HOWEVER...here is the catch. You must not post a storyline with the game - it should be revealed to the player as s/he plays through it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Results

OK everyone, the results have been entered, processed, and completed. Hard decisions were made, but the winners have been decided.

In first place we have...(drum roll)

"1. The Wooded Grotto", by Coach Shogun 20
http://www.filefront.com/15107759/TheWoodedGrotto-MindTrix.rar/

With the scores averaging out at 78%, the Wooded Grotto by Coach Shogun 20 stood out as the clear winner. The game comes from the deepest and darkest places of your mind and focusses on memories and sound. It is set in a creepy, natural area and isn't like anything I've seen on FPSC. Well done Coach Shogun 20.

Second place was hard to decide - it was a battle between General Jackson's "The Mansion" and Lord Smith's "RAT". With only an average 4% difference between their scores, second place was a close call. But I give you, in second place...(drum roll)

2. "The Mansion" by General Jackson
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=86d046ad09fc51c77432d3c9683f450ae04e75f6e8ebb871

Scores for "The Mansion" averaged out at 72%. "The Mansion" takes the player on a journey through a haunted mansion. There are many twists, unexpected suprises, good uses of sound effects, and a wide variety of areas. Congratulations, General Jackson

And finally, a big well done to the other entries who didn't make it into first or second place, including RAT by Lord Smith, The Hospital by SamHH, and The Haunted Mansion by The Fps Creator Rocks!

Prizes will be distributed shortly, but Holez should have already been sent to you by xplosys.

@Coach Shogun 20, would you like $30 or 3,000 store points? (If $30, please send your paypal email to [email protected]).

@General Jackson, I will get your points transferred ASAP - it will take however long the transfer takes.

Banners will be distributed once all prizes are given out.

Hope you have as much fun playing these entries as I did, and congratulations to the winners!

hmm... played penumbra... died at the first enemy. (you don't get any weapons in penumbra, you have to use your wits)

anyways, it's given me some good ideas, and i want to have another crack at it.

Hi, it’s Robert with Stealthmod! You’ll be saying Stealth every time you use this mod! It’s like CoD! It’s like L4D! It’s like BioShock. A regular mod doesn’t work good – this works good and great.

ooooohhh... well i'm sorry for being such a pansy, but penumbra IS a scary game and it's style is perfect for this competition. true, it's not as scary as doom3, or resident evil, or dead space, or all these other games, but it's very good for the kind of game marc steene is asking us to make.

I got to warn you all. Mine is coming along better than you would ever think of! Well, it needs more entities, but I'm putting more work on the scares! Putting in all the scares I know. I even found a way to do some F.E.A.R nightmare mode things! And it's gonna be a big level!

Do'h! Need to do it all again! Hmm... Damn! I sriously don't know what day it is. I never know. I don't even know when the month changes. I find out about the month change, when I see a new newsletter from TGC. LoL. Sorry... Well. I will delete it and start all over... Now is 4th right. So tomorrow... But as mgarands sig says: "Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun."

So, I hope yopu will forgive me. i was so stupid. I need to check the calendar next time. But my calendar is also 2 months late! What! And is it our time or your time... In here I can start again in 10 minutes. In america or somewhere it might take longer. But sorry! That level is no more existing! I will delete it after I've written this text!

I wonder how many birthdays I've missed. And how many gifts people own me! And appologies, for not remindĂng me of them! Well, they can replace appologies with gifts!

Are you so sure, shadowfire? I can agree about Darkest Depths, but I don't know about Dead Ship. It wasn't so good. At least when comparing to Darkest Depths! And I have learned new skills too! I was a noob, when I was making Planet Hell. That game isn't no where near of my games today!

I could start if I can play with my own time. It's 12:12 p.m here. So i could have been working for 10 minutes! Please, let me! All my taughts! They are in my head still!

well, at the moment i'm making a new ZS map for z-mod... and it's gonna be better than all my others put together!

and what you said about dead ship? it was the first ever game i released on these forums and i made it about a month after i even HEARD of fpsc. so yeah, it's kinda lame. it did provide some brief scares though, although they were pretty basic.

I decided to delay the competition start by one day so that everyone could gather their thoughts together and raise awareness of the competition. You can write down ideas and start preparing etc., but you shouldn't start designing yet (obviously, there is no way I can stop you from doing this, it's more of a personal moral choice on your behalf).

Gonna update the list again. Recruiting judges and prizes!

No way! It was the scariest game I've ever played.
You actually do get weapons of some sort, you know, like dynamite...
But the first enemy in Penumbra was easy, just use that little lever that sends the electricity, enemy will be electrified and dead.
