Winner announced!

The "I can't believe its FPSC!" contest is now over, and there where lots of great entries that shows what FPSC is capable off.
Hopefully the videos submitted to the contest will inspire other users to think outside the box.

Due to beeing a contest, there is also a winner.

One of the judges wrote this:

It looks like first person Silent Hill meets Penumbra/Amnesia, and it's certainly a winning combination. The system is well implemented and pretty well polished, complete with graphical cues to indicate the player's actions and respond with the appropriate, logical action. Great job!
Can I believe it's FPSC? Apart from the default HUD lingering in the top-left corner, I'd say it would be very hard to tell that this was an FPSC product, if implemented in a bigger game with the same attention to detail as demonstrated in the video's elements. Once again, excellent work!

As you may have guessed, the winner of the very first "I can't believe its FPSC" contest is

Rolfy

With his Interactive point and click system he shows that FPSC is capable of so much more than a run'n'gun FPS.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo_TuwZtQcw&feature=player_embedded

Congratulations Rolfy!

But as the gentleman he is, he has stated that he will pass any prizes he win further down.
So this time we also have a third place.

The second winner has shown, in a very nice presentation, that its very possible to create games that FPSC is not intended for.
It has been extremely hard for the judges since two entires are quite similliar, but one of the entires was a little bit better.

The second winner, and in this chase the first prize from the prizelist, is Omegamer for the Scifi Silent Hill style of mechanics.

And non the less, the third winner has shown that lights can be used for more then just light up an area. With awesome use of shadows, uzi idiot takes the third prize (which in this chase is the second prize).

Congratulations to all the winners!

I would also like to give 2Beastmode4u a special prize since he was so close, with an entry similiar to omegamer. He will get the "Great Minds Thinks Alike" prize á $10 TGC voucher.

Finaly I would like to thank everyone that has participated, and I hope there will be more contest like this in a near future.

Winners should contact me for info about the prizes etc.

Winners to be announced 1st July

In the spirit of Model Pack 54 and the 100th newsletter, it's now time for you to come up with a unique feature that is next to revolutionary for games, or at least for FPSC. You should then record a video of the feature in action and submit it to this thread. You should be able to visually show how cool your idea/feature is.

This is not a competition about design, its a competition about thinking outside the box!

Grand Prize:
*Any Steam games and/or add ons of your choice for a total value of €20 - $28 - £17
*A TGC voucher worth €14 - $20 - £12
*All rolfys skybox packs - Found here

Second prize:
*A TGC voucher worth €7 - $10 - £6

Rules:
*You may use scripts, sounds, model packs, screen effects and video post processing etc. since it is the idea itself that is judged.
*You may use any tools you own in order to create content for your entry
*You may only use FPSC (x9 x10 or modded) to create your entry

*
Feel free to use any of the screen video recorders avaiable, WeGame is recommended
*The video should be submitted to YouTube and merged into this thread before the submission date
*Your entry must be legal, your own work and not in any way offensive.

Video recorders:
FPSCapture
WeGame

Judging
Your entry will be judged upon the following criteria:

*Creativity - How creative is your entry? Is it unique?
*The idea - How well the idea is used in your video, and if it is useful for its game genre
*Awesomeness - Does your entry make the judges scream "I Can't believe it's FPSC!"

Submission:
Your entry should be uploaded to YouTube and posted as an integrated video in the thread, found in FPSC Chat, by no later than 15th June 23.59 GMT

Notice new deadline!

This competition is not sponsored by either Steam or The Game Creators

Can I join with a little Silent Hill test level of my at this time unreleased Silent Hill script?
That would be awesome!

Aww yea! This competition looks like its right up my alley. Although I have a few questions. A) Does it matter when the feature/idea was created? Is it ok if it was made before this contest, or does it need to be brand new, fit to the contest? B) Are there any particulars to the rules of the unique feature? Or can it just be any original idea? Either way, COUNT ME IN!

It doesnt matter when the feature/idea was created. But make sure you are the original author of it, claiming someone elses feature as your own may harm your entry.

But, as in your example with the Silent Hill style, I would say that even thouh its a remake of an existing games feature it is still unique for FPSC. Which mostly is the whole point of the competition

Otherwise the competiton should have another name then "I Can't Believe it's FPSC "

Quote: " B) Are there any particulars to the rules of the unique feature? Or can it just be any original idea?"

It could be anything that is impressive, either for games in general or for FPSC. Recreating the "le parcour" style from Mirrors Edge in FPSC would be very impressive

Isn't it the core of a good game to have features outside the FPSC line?

Don't count on me, as my spare time varies a lot these days, but I try to get something to add done

Indeed, thats why I feel a competition like this could bring it forward

I hope the result of the competition is not only some great ideas/features, but also opening up the minds of most developers here

And I am sure there is no way to use fpsc editor for level mapping but another engine? It would emphasize the title.

Thanks,

Quote: "Your feature doesn't have to work in FPSC right now, but you should be able to visually show it as if it is actually fully functional."

So you could use another program to show your FPSC feature?

Quote: "*The feature should be somewhat working in FPSC (modded or unmodded or X10), or at least be able to work in the near future."

I'm confused about that part, I see a lot of theory around here that may or may not work in FPSC you never really know whether it will or not until you fully test it.
I have ran into problems before which ensured that an idea would never be workable in FPSC, but not till I had dropped it in and tried it.
If it wont work does it still say "I cant believe its FPSC", maybe it does since it wouldnt actualy be in FPSC

I agree with Rolfy, if it's not something that actually works in FPSC right now then you can't really say "I can't believe it's FPSC" because it actually isn't - it just looks like it because you used the same models. Heck, I could load the models up in DBPro and make all sorts of things happen that wouldn't be possible in today's FPSC, or I could dump them into Unity and show it running on an IPod Touch or whatever. But none of that would actually be FPSC, y'know?

Omegamer's Silent Hill control scripts are a perfect example of something that makes you say "wow, I can't believe that actually works in FPSC" - I think the rules should be that it must work in either a current beta or release version of vanilla FPSC. Then you'd have to rely on your skills as an FPI scripter and/or level design wiz to win.

Interesting contest, though. I'd love to enter but don't know if I'll get a chance - I've got a non-fpsc project that I must finish in the next 2-3 weeks before I could even attempt an entry. But maybe I'll take a night or two off and whip up something for this.

It compiled! Ship it!

Nope, a feature doesnt have to be something scripted/coded. A weapon used in a new and unique way could count as a feature.

I hope that this competition could get users to learn some basic .fpi scripting, to be honest the .fpi language is underrated. You can make lots of usefull things with it, not only to open a door in a specific way

You would use the map editor to make the whole structure, and use your own engine to control any dynamic events.

If you use the models from FPSC and drop it all into DBPro its not FPSC, same with any other engine.
Using another engine is not an FPSC feature if it works in FPSC now then fine.
Might as well say ya can create a huge terrain landscape with a gazillion characters as that might just be possible in future versions, but using UDK to show it off now is plain daft.
If your talking about your own modded version of FPSC then go for it but I think your mod should be complete enough to actually show your new features.

I liked the old rules. I thought this was to think outside the box and show some wondrous new feature that "could" be possible in FPSC. If it has to be in FPSC and working, then I can believe it's FPSC.

The whole point me saying that is that you need to state...

USE ONLY FPSC!

...meaning this...

Quote: ""By using allready existing features from FPSC you may visually show an idea/feature that not necessary would work technically ( in the means of missing commands etc). The more of your feature that actually works, the better""

is nonsense.

Just a quick question, when we post our video, do we need to make it just a clickable like or like an actual viewable video in the thread. If its the second option, can someone tell me how? Im not 100% how to integrate a youtube video into the thread.

hey Cyborg, i've created a ammo refiller, that refills your ammo by pressing the enter key, and you can only take ammo from the refiller 3 times, is this a good feature ? it worth to put this here ?
i'm asking cuz it's a very simple mechanism ya know ?
i'm also trying to develop a way to decrease the maximum player's weapons to any value you want, and if nobody thought about this before, you're all going to hate yourselves, cuz it's too simple, way too easy, you guys will all say, Ohh i can't belive aint thought about this before !

i've based miself in the crysis 2's ammo refiller.

Just looking through the rules and thought that I should bring this up... The FPSC X9, X10, and modded. Do they(should they) all get points distributed equally? Honestly, I think that the un-modded version should get more points than the modded. I mean, using Project Blue or RPG Mod will make things easier than pure vanilla. I dont own X10 so I cant say anything about that, besides to be sure not to score on the looks.. Cheers.

Its still a feature Even though it may sound simple it could be very useful.

Well, of course we will have in mind what version of FPSC you use. But there wont be "extra points for vanilla", we will see what happens in the end.

Dont worry

Most of my registry got messed up so I'm going to go on cnet and get a registry defender and something to fix the registry errors. To think, I actually still have a installer for it on my flashdrive.

edit: retrieved my serial and authentication key, reinstalling 3ds max 9 now, hopefully i have enough time.

Edit2: it appears i need to go into my boot.ini and disable the DEP : /
