Likewise, I've been occupied lately, but I think I can squeeze in some time for this.

...just wondering:
What happens if Pricey doesn't respond with a new challnege? Its been two weeks since his last post here. Is there a time limit as to how long you can take to post a new challenge?...

*Checks rules*

The rules don't specify what happens if the challenge setter disappears.

There's a rule in there somewhere I think that says if no challenge is set then the responsibility falls to the runner up (in this case a runner up wasn't declared), and failing that the responsibility falls to the community. Let's give Pricey until tomorrow, and then if there's still no challenge we'll put suggestions forward and agree on one as a community.

Personally, I think the idea of a racing game was a good one, but it probably needed to be a bit more specific. It might just be that everyone was busy - I know I was!

Ok - time to get this moving. I will propose a challenge, and if we get a couple of nods of agreement, we'll go with it. Unless anyone objects, I suggest I act as stand in judge for this one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Challenge: IQ Game

You've all heard of the latest fad known as 'brain training', right? The aim of this challenge is to create a game which provides a 'mental challenge'. This could be anything from a simple arithmatic test, or a word game, to a simulation of a Rubik's cube. Anything which makes your brain work.

Deadline: Fridy 2nd May. That's one week only, so we get things moving quickly (unlike the usual two weeks where we have the first week completely quiet before anyone starts!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this get's the go-ahead, I'll post an announcement in the main forum. Those in favour say aye!

Ok - everyone seems to be in agreement, so let's go with it. As today's Friday, I'll edit my post above to put the deadline at one week from today - Friday 2nd May. Good luck.

I just tried to clone a Lights-Off-game
(( Explanation

))

Here's the (nearly finished ) game (just 3 levels for now):

I hope this still counts as an entry, its more a kind of logic-game

Here's the first version of mine: it's one of those "IQ Tester" peg games you see at restraunts. Try it out and please leave critiques!

OH SHOOT!!! its may first... okay, i got about 2 hours to finish... AWAY!!!

EDIT:
okay wow... i kinda bruted this thing to death, but it works. the code is bad, BUT IT WORKS!!!!
you get 5 num between 1 and 50. you must add / subtract them from eachother in order to get another num between 1 and 50.
if you dont think its possible, hit, impossible.... this game is REALLY hard....

so that is my entry.... i hope it still counts if its ON may first...

Ok, judging time. 4 good entries for this challenge:

Image All - nice idea, and you need to be pretty alert to remember the keys. Unfortunately, on my PC at least, something weird happened in the colours round - it asked me to press keys when I saw red, blue or green areas on the screen, but all I saw was yellow boxes and words appear! Nevertheless, I got the idea. Good clear instructions, too.

Red Flames - I've never played lights off before now, but this is a fun little game. Levels one and two seemed quite easy (or perhaps it was just luck!), but level 3 was pretty tough. Well executed.

bmaczero - similar to the game I know as solitaire, except played on a triangular grid. Nicely presented, and fun to play. apparently my IQ is only 'so-so' so far!

flashing snall - arithmetic game which as far as I know is quite original. Makes the brain work - perhaps adding a time limit would make it even more interesting.

The runner up is

and the winner is

congratulations - I'm sure you know what to do next.

Yay! My first win! Thanks Ric, and congrats to RedFlames. I always liked those 'lights-out' games, and yours was pretty nice-looking for using no media.

So, for the next challenge, I was trying to think of something that people would commonly try to do in their games. A mist effect or a fog-of-war function were some good ones that came to mind. But eventually, I decided that a 3D explosion effect would produce a wider variety of entries.

Challenge
Create a 3D explosion. This, of course can be taken a variety of ways, so take it as you will. Transparent spheres, particles, mushroom clouds, or maybe a combination of them all.

Scoring
The main factor in scoring this challenge will be how realistic and convincing the explosion appears. Bonus points for things like flying debris, or anything else that sets your entry appart from the others.

Deadline
The deadline will be in two weeks, as this is one of those things that usually looks better the more effects you add to it. That is Sunday, May 18th.

Have fun! As usual, commented and understandable code is recommended so others can learn from it or at least understand what it does. I look forward to seeing your explosions!

Sorry. Anyway, I imagine much of the challenge in this one will be having your program generate the media. If you could just take an animated explosion object and have it play, well, there's no challenge in that!

Everybody is so self-deprecating today .

That looks awesome, CuCuMBeR! I think it would look much better if you made it a bit more chaotic, it seems like just one object expanding toward the beginning.

Well I was giving this one a bit a of a bash, having some spare time and all, but I didn't read that it was only 3D! So heres what I had so far but I don't know if it qualifies.

I know it's very simple and doesn't look WOW but it was a start. It wasn't finished but I don't know if I want to if I can't enter it!
Is this 2D explosion allowed?

I also added support for a gamepad or a joystick with force feedback, try it! It's fun as the houses come down!

What version of DBpro are you using? What IDE are you using? Would it help if I uploaded an .exe for you to try?

Also I get an error from your code lol, "No force feedback controller found at line etc..."

@Jeff - Sweet

@Darth - When I copy text from the forum, I have to look for lines that don't wrap right.... like:

gets changed to

Also the greater-than & less-than signs always end up & g t;
and & l t; and I have to search-n-replace em...

Lastly... I don't have a force feedback joystick either... so I had to comment out each command starting with FORCE

Actually, I only said 3D because I figured it would be too much of a pain to make an explosion in 2D. Yours will be accepted.

@jeff
That's awesome! But like jason said, I had to rem out the force commands or it wouldn't run. Maybe you could use PERFORM CHECKLIST FOR CONTROL DEVICES so the program could tell if the user had a force-feedback joystick.

DBpro: Newest.
IDE: Synergy (Sometimes acts odd, maybe that's the cause)
It would help if you'll upload an .exe, I think . But only if it has no viruses!

@Must Program:
As you've been around since November 2007, you should have seen the many posts about newbies who want to make MMOs. But it seems you haven't, so I'll reiterate them here.

An MMORPG is one of the most complex types of games you could ever try to make. At first, it may seem easy to do moving, collision, picking up items, even attacking and doing quests, but if you have ever tried to make even the simplest of games you'll know how difficult a seemingly simple proposition can be. Bugs pop up, things don't work as you think they should, and simple tasks turn out to take days to perfect.

In addition to that, to make any kind of MMO you need to have a firm grasp on networking, servers, and such.

If these programs are "way over your head," as you say, then I would have to say that you don't have even the slimmest chance of making an MMORPG at this point. For now: start with a simple chat program. If you can't do that, better stay away from mulitplayer games until you've made some other kinds and gotten a firm grasp of the concepts involved in programming.

Anyway...
@jeff
What do you mean "for next time"? The next challenge? Clarify
