The judgements are tomorrow (planned).
Penfold, I recommend you to send in your code. As for anyone else: send in your codes too! You all stand a fair chance!

not many rocks or bushs but theres a function to create them both in there so feel free to play, anyone who butchers it alot and wants to show the end product that would be great

Hehe. rofl

I was gone this weekend, so I didn't have time to upload this final version. It has some controls to affect the flow of the water and a rock you can move around to break the flow. But because the judging is delayed, maybe it can still be counted ?

Well they here are!
The results. It is my first judgement so the texts are not too long… Have fun and congrats, [insert name here].

Bmaczero: Nice! That pipeline is just… Great ! And playing around with that stone is cool too! This could be useful in a 2D game or something… I like it a lot! Even though it’s 2D (I prefer 3D). One comment: maybe you could have done that the “mist” does not only go towards top-left but a bit random, you know?

RedFlames:
Haha, fun . But the slowness… The idea is good, the work-out could be slightly better (particles falling through surface, slow), it didn’t look like water… That bouncing is a bit unrealistic, you see? But other than that, good job on that collision (I couldn’t do that! )

CuCuMBeR: Cool! I like the “reflection”, I like the “glowing”, I like much of it. The only thing there were a few bugs in it, and it just did not look right… You see, with all those different colours (or colors? :S ) it hurt my eyes… But not looking at those aspects, really cool!

Acelepage: Lol! This is just funny! Only thing, it ran too fast… I like how you tried to give everything a texture , and the gravity seems to work good

Penfold: Penfold… Yea… What to say? First sight: WOW, it looks good! It even looks brilliant! Like those decorations, although there could be more. I also like the terrain, nice find using DATA statements! But the mist was a little weird, going all different directions. Water was nice! Weird thing (not “ununderstandable”): the shores. They were a bit… weird . Really nice!

Ruler8163: Wooh! I found this nice too! What I like most is the “path” the water follows. And the terrain is nice too! Found one “bug”: if the camera is at the beginning of the waterfall and you look towards the waterpool, the water is a bit muddy . Kewl!

Ok, so that was everyone. I have two people in mind… Here comes! (please don’t get angry )

The runner up is:

And the winner is: ..................

CONGRATULATIONS!
And see you next challenge!

@CuCuMBer, it is difficult to code for a new judge, because you do not know your audience. After a while you get to know what kind of code a judge likes. Now we know what jeffhuys likes, so we'll know what he's looking for next time (if there is a next time

I like your free idea. I'd vote for you.

( 2b || !2b ), that is the question. The answer: true

Ok as its my first time for winning any of these coding modelling challenges you'll have to tell me if I've missed anything and I'll update as needed.

Ok the *NEW challenge* (hopefully not been done before)

The Challenge
To create a weapon effect, this could be of any type to fit into any genre of game or type of game (ie FPSC, RPG, 2D beat 'em up etc.). It should include but is not limited to a type of ammuntion (this could be a bullets for a machine gun, a barbed wire launcher, wizards fireball, blobs of ice cream or anything that can be fired from a weapon),this weapon effect should start at a set point (this could be as simple as a sphere/circle) and end somewhere else.

I've intentionally left this broad and open to see how inventive people can be, obviously you'll get scored more for something that acts like the rail gun out of the film *eraser* than if it fired simple bullets.

Scoring
I've split the scoring up a little so you can see what I'm looking for and so you can aim to get as many points as possible.

60% for the actual projectile including all related special effects
30% for any extras (unexpected but cool stuff that go with the challenge)
5% for being in a function called from a mouse/ button click from the main loop
5% for the entry to *execute first time* (please check your code before you post!)

that should be an easy 10% scores for everyone (ok most people) there, I've added a function call because I want to see how well people can make modular code and the other freebie points to try and make it easier for people to test everyones code including me

Deadline
Shall we say midnight a week on sunday,22nd of June and I will work out the scores when I get home from work the following day, so that should allow for time differences.

So lets get going and lets see some CRAZY weaponry.

first person to create an orbital satelite that can fire multiphasing cows at the speed of a vespa falling off a cliff wins (joke)

Does this have to be a projectile weapon or could it be a melee weapon?

I guess it could be a melee weapon but I can't see how you could fit it into the idea of the challenge unless it was thrown.

I'm mainly looking for people to make *a special effect* that would normally go with a projectile, as I said if it was a thrown melee wepon with swoosh marks a bit like all the moves from the streetfighter games I guess it would fit. A weapon on its own wouldn't (as its not the weapon itself but its effect that I'm judging on)

Quote: "you'll get scored more for something that acts like the rail gun out of the film *eraser* than if it fired simple bullets."
I'll quote myself.

Things that could be incorporated if people are stuck for ideas:

particle trails (these could be anything from smoke to spirals)
multiple targets at once (forked lightning mebe?)
sparks
mid air /contact exploding ammo
Lasoo/wrap around ammo (did I spell that right?)
ammo that changes shape and size in flight for whatever reason

I could prolly come up with more if I thought about it but I'd like to be surprised.

Remember you can make a weapon from primitives / mesh adaption but you will get marked more for the actual responce/effect from firing or throwing it.

Haha yeah, my brother said that every 10th frame of my previous entry on the challange should subliminally flash by saying "pick this entry for first place, sinisterstuf is the best!" or something like that...
It was a nice idea but I ended up not doing it because I decided it was unethical

I think the idea to make it fair on all is to use new code although I'm not sure how snippets of old code would fit into this.

I'd read the rules if I were you,(I haven't read them in a long time, but I use new code each and every time).

Mhm...

Quote: "9. You may use code from any other entries within the challenges thread for your current entry, so long as you improve upon it in some way and give credit."

I guess I can. I didn't use it for a challenge yet though.
I could code it all the way over and make it "new code" but that seems a waste of time to me...

If there's anyone else that wants to use the "old code" I was talking about: you can find it here.

No - it looks like no-one got around to entering this one. Could the previous winner (Penfold) please set a new challenge. Probably a good idea to make it a simple one, with a 1 week deadline to get the ball rolling again - we don't want another three weeks of down time. Once the challenge is set, I'll post an announcement on the main board.

Well, you asked for it.

Challenge: Dance Off! - The objective of this challenge is to see who can create the hippinest, happenest media-less dance animation. It can be 2D, it can be 3D, it can be a person, it can be a cube man, it can be a cube kitty. As long as it's groovin and moovin, I don't care.

Extra points will be awarded for creating medialess music and interactivity.

Deadline: July 9th, 2008 @ 18:02 EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) - That's two weeks.

Enjoy, and good luck.

Hey, kind of quiet around here, hope a few out there are working on some code for this challenge.

I have been working on my dance program in a few spare moments.
I have used a few older routines, some new midi routines, and some new user control ideas.

I hope to have something usable in a couple more days, I should make it by the deadline.

Yep, I am building midi files from scratch,
by outputting the correct bytes needed for the midi file structure.

There are no DBPro commands to do this, I am just creating the midi files myself.
You will see how I am doing this when I post my code, soon I hope.

Thats so cool. So does that mean that you know the codes for all the notes? How? Did you do mass trial and error until you got a pattern or what?! Are the codes for different instruments different?

Thanks, it is kinda cool, but there are limitations within DBPro as to how it handles midi files.

It seems like I can only load the same midi file once, using the load music command, and it will only play one midi file at a time which limits multiple midi sounds or files from playing at the same time.

Yes, I do know how to code all the notes, and all the different midi instruments (127 of them) as well as just the drum sounds that I am using in my dancing demo.

I learned about the midi file structure online, it is rather complex, mostly where the delays between each note are concerned.
And yes there was a great deal of trial and error, but trying out new ideas usually takes many tries to figure out if it is possible.
I made dozens of midi files that wouldn't work, just by having one byte that was wrong sometimes.

I will see if I can post some code later today.

That sounds so awesome. Are you a musician? And what if you want to use different drum sets? Because this could be revolutionary for the dbpro coding challenge (unless it's been done before ofcourse) because there's this one drum set which consists only of sound effects!!!

No, contrary to popular belief my name is not actually 'Sinister Stuff' but 'sinisterstuf', a misspelling resulting from the latter having too many characters with no spaces in between

oh well

not that i ever participate in the challenges here, but i do enjoy the many submissions found in this thread. so, as a regular member of the (quite interested yet normally quiet) audience, i thought i'd help BillR with a suggestion:

i don't know how you all feel about the olympics, but i'm definitely looking forward to it. so, my suggestion is an olympic event. any event, be it a summer or winter game. archery, pole vault, bob sled, even curling! and, bonus points for multiple events in the same submission?
