ok, Without any more info,.. this is as generic as I can get.. The idea is simply to take a stock photo (soccer related) and gray out an area to use as the menu.. Anyone can do this type of thing with just about any paint program..

Original wallpaper link..

Sometimes I answer my own questions..

Cheers!

found this wallpaper that could also be used..

..and a sample of what could be done...

Whoops. Sorry it was late for me. I was tired. I'm sorry. I love the bottom one. As of yet, I can't think of a name for the game. So... Any suggestions would help for that.

Quote: "Q?: Is he being sly and the menu request will be followed by game graphics requests?"

No no. I wanted to be brave and try to make my own graphics for once, but the menu is what everyone seems to judge most games on, so I wanted at least one part of the game to look good.

I liked the style you went with on the menu. Thanks!
(Are you sure you aren't psychic? That's almost exactly what I wanted. Well, except for the title on the first. But That's my fault)

Again,Thank you very much!

Edit: Maybe X-FĂștbol? Lol. But you come up with game names

I think you can do better with the header. I looks like you've just plonked a bright red title over an otherwise well designed menu.

When I originally got DBpro I was gonna make all kinds of 'different' and 'innovative' games.. Here is a pic of a game idea from way back when...

The object is to move the ball (left side) to the finish (right side). The player gets to manipulate the game board in a unique way. The player must choose a source and destination (arrow direction) to swap, and all the corresponding arrows on the game board get swapped. The player then presses 'Go' and the ball moves forward (based on the arrow directions) 3 spaces. As the ball advances the trailing space dissapears. I have an old Iso version of this and it works surprisingly well, and the board is randomly generated so each game is a new challenge. Note Not all boards have a solution, but 'Special' prizes like Extra Life or a 'Wait' token can be won. One day I'll get back to this and update the graphics.

Don't mind me I'm just trying to kick some inspiration into my head.

Cheers!

Very nice, David - both the game and the UI surround on the previous page! I very much like the crackly-broken-old look for it.
I didn't quite understand your game mechanics - do you click two arrows and those two arrows swap, or do you click to arrows and ALL the arrows of those types swap?
Either way - cool stuff

Hi Tinker, The above pic just shows a mockup of the board. On the left hand panel there will be 4 direction arrows that the player selects. One group of arrows represents the 'source' and one the new direction the be swapped with. Once a source and new direction is selected 'ALL' the coresponding arrows on the board are swapped. and redrawn under the various overlay bits'n'bobs.

If I use the above board as a guide.. If the game were to start and the ball moved forward 3 spaces (following the arrows) it would move right, then down, then left and crash in the side of the board. But remember the player can 'swap' any 2 dirrections. so If I first swapped the left arrow with the right arrow (ALL the left arrows on the board become right arrows and all the right arrows become left arrows.) The ball would then move Right, Down, Right, up (stopping on the bannana (which would now be sitting on a right arrow).. rinse reapeat till you get to finish.

Note: you are not limited to swapping opposite direction arrows you can swap any directions. (and indeed it becomes necessary very quickly to do so.) Note 2.0 When the ball lands on a 'special' tile it stops and any remaining movement is discarded.

I can give more details, but I think I can do better.. let me scan my HD.. brb

Cheers!

Good luck chris. Hope you make good progress with your theme park simulator.. and your Far Cry remake which I'm sure will be very successful due to the easiness of DBPro and also your devine talent that you told me about earlier. Also I don't think the creators of Far Cry are actually that good, it was only a fluke that they sold one of the most popular games out these days. I'm sure you can outdo them easily (don't forget to credit me for the boat model )..

Good greif, David - that's quite a bundle of classic, 2d games there! You're a puzzle fiend! I had a wee go of them all - I've never been as much of a fan of the dice rolling games, but that could be due to a traumatic experience with probability as a child in maths class. (As in, they tried to teach me probability as a child, and that was traumatic).

I had a go of your arrow tile swapping game - that was rock hard to play. I failed miserably and went onto another game Quite liked the colour rotating gem one, but I could never get enough greens...

Anyway - enough of that - those are most excellent games, and I do hope that you decide to stick with DB for your future game ideas. If I can help at all (I know I tried in the past, and failed) then please don't hesitate to ask. While usually I'll not go out of my way to play 2d puzzlers or the like, you've obviously got a wonderful style going on there (several, in fact).

Now, if only I could get off my backside and make my puzzle game Oh well Thanks for seperating me from my evening with those games, David It was worth being terrified of DosBox and command line interfaces.

lol, I have always had a fondness for puzzle type games that require at least an ounce of gray matter. ..

Here is the Deluxe version of LaserCross. My first program written in C++.. (what a yucky language)

Anyways, this one runs fine in windows, on the different systems I tried it on anyways.

Let me know if it was worthy of the 'deluxe' name.

Cheers!

Man, I just bought Corel Painter 9.5. Affordable, and holy smokes... let me tell you... it blows Adobe Photoshop away when it comes to painting. Plus there's all kinds of cool features, I myself like being able to rotate my canvas on the fly much like I'd turn a page when drawing. It's just more natural than Photoshop. I still love Photoshop. They both have their strengths, but I think for freehand work Painter has an edge over Photoshop.

LaserCross Deluxe works fine on my PC at work, David. And I have to say the 'hold pieces for later' bank is a wonderful addition. This time, when I played it, I actually got past the second level (as opposed to when I played the original, and couldn't even get past the first level!) Definitely fun - though again, not my usual cup of tea

Not sure it'd warrant the 'deluxe' title, but it's certainly an improvement on the first version Maybe LaserCross 2.0 or something Inspired by the old 'pipemania' style games, at all?

(And I agree with you - icky language, C++. Why'd they have to go and make it harder to use than Basic, eh?)

Yup, definately inspired by the old 'pipe mania' type games.. I'm convinced that I invented the join the pipes type game. Way back when I was like 12-14 years old. I created a card game that I called 'Plumbers Pipes' I built and sent a prototype to Parker Brothers. They sent me a letter saying they do not accept unsolicited creative ideas. (but oddly they neglected to return the prototype) 2 months later they introduced a game on the market called 'Waterworks' Which was virtually 'Identical' to the game design I sent them. the only difference was they had little metal wrenches for 'repair' whereas I had a 'repair-card'. Since they kept my prototype, I had no way of persuing them for stealing my design. Then , not long after I began making a pipe-mania type game for my Atari 800. (the working title was Leaky Pipes) Lo and behold, before I finished the game LucasArts came out with Pipe Mania. Of course I could not blame them for stealing my idea since I did not contact them in any way. Again the main diffrence with my game and pipe mania was that (like lasercross) when I had 'T' as well as 4 way pipes. and the water did not 'magically' flow one way through these pipes, the water spilled out every exit. It was imho much more stressfull and exciting.

Oh well, Live and learn. But the lesson I learnt is just give anything away for fre, that way you forgo any possible agrivation of people stealing your designs. As a result I'm a starving artist with a flood of creative ideas. All worthy of being stolen.

Speaking of Pipe Mania type games.. I'm surprised that this piece of artwork was never adopted when I posted it..

I'm fairly sure most creative, and not rubbish, people have a story of parrallel development (or sometimes outright stealing) to tell - I've got a few myself. (Though not as genre defining as your Plumbers Pipes game).

You've got the right idea though - when you resign yourself to the idea that if you make known your idea, then someone might steal it, then it becomes more of a point of pride than anything else.

"Wow - that was my idea, and look how successful it's been! I must be good!"

Still, there are a few ideas I sit on instead of letting go free. It means they're less likely to be realised, but sometimes you just have to keep a few for yourself. The worst thing, of course, is when you're so excited about the idea (and insecure) that you just want to tell eeeeeveryone!

Sorry - I'll stop hijacking your thread.

I was wondering how you'd use your tiles there to get the 'slowly filling up' look. I was never sure how they got it in the first place. Animated sprites? Transparency and a 'mask' underneath? Real time pixel filling? *shrugs* I'm not sure how I'd approach it, personally.

Tinkergirl, in the lasercross game I just use a getpixel and putpixel command to move the laserbeams. It's done in a timing loop so it keeps it at a predetermined pace. The 'blitz' button in laser cross deluxe basically says "IF Blitz=1 THEN Skip timer; ELSE Timer" the getpixel is to let me know when I hit a mirror and which mirror it is so I know what the new direction is. When I hit a 'lense' I just add a new laser beam (or 2) to draw and send them on their way. I'm kind of prowd of the logic I used to get all the lasers going. at higher levels you can get lots of lasers running at the same time.

I expect the empty pipe could be placed and the water flow drawn in much the same way would work.

Cheers!

If it gets stickied, it'll also probably get moved to the 2d art board. David's already said he doesn't want it moved. It's not truely relavent to DarkBasic Pro programming, so I can't see it being stickied in this board.

Offering media to dBPro programmers is..

Quote: "It's not truely relavent to DarkBasic Pro programming, so I can't see it being stickied in this board."

Am I supposed to infer from this that dBPro programmers do not need/want graphics? And move to "2D All the Way", what's that supposed to mean? my 3D models suck so bad they need to be sent to 2D. LoL

Sure the majority of my artwork is 2D and allot is UI related. So 3D games have no need for GUI's? or 2D textures? Wow..

Here's a new Slogan for dBPro.. "dBPro & DirectX,.. ASCII at it's best!"

I'm Gobsmacked and have nothing more to say.

Of course 3D games need 2D media. My 3D game uses a ton of 2D media besides textures.

I think what Tapewormz means is that while 2D graphics are absolutely necessary for game making, they don't relate directly to DBP. They could just as easily apply to DBC, or another language.

Now, the intent of this thread has been to create small games based on the posted media. I don't think that this has been followed. Rather, it has turned into a showcase of everyone's 2D graphics. In its current state, it's absolutely fabulous as a 2D graphics resource, but not directly relevant to Dark Basic Professional.

So, it's great in the DBP section, but in the 2D section I think that it would most definitely deserve a sticky.

Wow, I'm Gobsmacked.. IMHO All games should have graphic media weather this is in the form of textures, UI graphics, wigets, or 3d models. DBPro is (as far as I can tell) a Game Development Platform. Saying a 'graphics' thread does not belong in the DBPro forum is IMHO wrong on so many levels.

Perhaps TGC need a new Topic added to their current list "Media Buffet" And within that topic have subcategories for 2D, and 3D. My thread could then be moved there as a sticky. (I'd suggest the 'Free Media' thread also be moved there and stickied also)

The reason I suggest a new topic is simply because by your own logic this thread does 'NOT' belong in the "2D All the Way" thread either. That topic is for 'coding' discussions for 2D games.

<sarcasm mode ON> It has become apparent that 'Code-based' discussion and 'graphics-based' discussions need to be separated. For the good of all involved. <sarcasm mode OFF>

***Attention Mods PLEASE move this thread to where it belongs!***
***Or make it a Sticky and change it's name to 'Media Buffet' ***
***Else follow the new topic suggestion above. Pretty Please? ***

Cheers!

I like it here. What's wrong with it here? Personally, I think it would be unfortunate for it to get moved to the 2d forum - because that place is deader than a doornail. There's not even enough life there to make a pixel tumbleweed.

Here, it's survived the high traffic DBPro boards, and it's gathered a lot of good attention and useful media. The only sad part about it is that the DB Classic people probably won't know it's here, but that can't really be helped (much as good things for both DBC and DBPro in the Newcomers forum are often missed by people who don't go there). There are very occasional 3d models in this thread too, remember, so it's not exclusively 2d.

A name change might be nice though.

I like it here also, but with how many of us know about it it might increase the traffic in 2d all the way also. Here is an idea Dave, why don't you post a new challenge with some graphics, a couple of us could enter and it would become more relevant to dbp and perhaps stickied here.

I've been inactive here too long, but I'm not terribly skilled in the old ways of the artist. So I've uploaded a .X of a bowling pin/skittle. In Max, it's the 'official' height of 15 inches, it's white with a red stripe on the neck, the pivot point is the base, and it's got 190 triangles/poly's in it.

Maybe someone can use it. (There, more 3d media to the pile )

Tinkergirl, the only program I managed to view the bowling pin in was 3d Action Reducer. LithUnwrap, Bryce, and my custom .x file viewer (for the game I'm currently working on) does lot load the model. I tried exporting as a .3ds but the filenames are too long, it gives errors. Also. when I looked at the .x file your original C:\programfiles...etc path is hardcoded. Errors trying to find the textures abound.

Just thought I'd give you the heads up. The shape (uncolored) looks spot on though.

I had trouble exporting a 3ds of it (dodgy filetype - bah). But I'll upload another type of .X here just now.

This one is binary as opposed to ascii, but I've tested both of them in my little DB based .X viewer, from various places on my machine, and they seem to work. Very sorry that they didn't work. Hopefully the second one will (straw clutching). I've been told that the texture path doesn't get used in DB anyway, as long as they're in the same folder as the model.

Any advice, from anyone?

The above pic is proof that I managed to get your model into Bryce for a quick render.. But, that said.. I have to first convert the .x to .3ds then change the textures to .jpg and resave, load into Lithunwrap and convert it back to a .x text/uncompressed (so that I could verify the material path)

***Attached is the new .x and .jpg materials***

The new .x loads into every .x viewer/editor/converter I have. I'd say it is now more 'universal' in format than the first one. The big test is does the new .x load into dBPro? Anyone care to test?

Cheers!

BTW Tinkergirl, I have run into this 'compatibility' problem with 'ALL' models which came to me through 3DS Max. I think it's .x exporter plugin is fudged. Some programs are just more 'forgiving' of the errors and allow the model to be loaded.

My post wasn't attacking this thread. I was just saying that the DBP thread is supposed to be for darkbasic pro questions, and discussions. I think you should read what I typed again. I didn't say move this thread, I said you didn't want it moved. I just said it probably wouldn't get stickied here and why.

All that being said, I don't think it's the end of the world or that anyone will stop using this thread if it's moved. The people that frequent this thread, will continue to frequent it no matter where it is...Unless they all coincidently die in a bizarre series of events.

So,.. Step 1.. If I build it they will come. (completed) Step 2.. If they move it they will follow. lol

And Tapewormz the phrase that 'irked' me was..

"..It's not truely relavent to DarkBasic Pro programming"

Man DarkBasic Professional is IMHO ALL about Game Making. Graphics are an 'integral' part of game making, saying a graphics thread does not belong in the DBPro discussion board is just plain wrong. Besides, there is no 'Graphics Discussion Board'. The '2D All the Way' board is about 'coding' 2D games so graphics does not belong there either.

So ***MODS*** if you think (like me) that graphics are an important part of game making, do us all a favor and create a new board topic "Graphics Buffet & Lounge" Where people can go to discuss graphics and offer any free images and graphics code advice they want, without stepping on the 'hard code' (Keep the DBPro Board a Media-Free Zone) programmers.

Cheers!

Oh and I think this thread's original intent to see what you programmers could do if given artwork failed misserably. Except for 2 or 3 people who used some of the graphics, I seem to have frightened or otherwise killed the spirit of coding creativity. At one point I tried to make a 'minimalist' media challenge and even offered 'Custom Artwork' as a prize.. Not a single person accepted the challenge. So I now believe that when a programmer is given media their brains get fried and they loose the ability to code. Most Programmers can't draw to save their life. I thought I'd do my part to help in that area, Only time will tell if I made any kind of mark in this community.

Tapewormz, weather or not it was your intent (and I believe it was NOT) to bash me in any way, saying my thread is not 'relevant' to DBPro was like a slap in the face. But don't worry, I can, will and always do turn the other cheek.

..back to regular scheduled programming, err I mean Artwork, or is it CodeArt, or GraphiCode, or.. lol

Though it wasn't this thread directly, you provided graphics for Templar Quest, and code appeared from that. Maybe it's not completely hopeless?

David,

There is the 2D board, if that's not for 2D art discussion then I don't know what is! .

It's nice to see 2D is still getting attention here, and the 2D board is being used more - it's just that it's a fairly low traffic part of the forum.

Nice pixel work all over the place in this thread, it should be in 2D where it'll have page 1 to itself for a year or 8.

Err, ummm, This thread is not limited to 2D it's just predominantly 2D..

Are the few 3D models I made, and others made some 3D stuff too, Like Tinkergirl's Bowling Pin just up a bit in the thread.

I might try my hand at making a few different 3D objects in the near future.

Anyways, bottom line is I believe this thread should stay exactly where it is.

Cheers!

Hehe no sane moderator would move a 20 page thread - and it would not have 20 pages in the 2D forum, but if you made a thread with these graphics in the 2D section then I think people would appreciate them there too.

People making 2D games often go there, and having a good resource with enough stuff to actually make a full game, or even just enough bits for a quick puzzle game project is very handy. I don't mean you should replicate it, just start a thread with the 2D stuff linked to it and invite others to contribute too, it would be a good start to a 'free 2D game media' sticky.

Just a thought.

I made a post in the "2D All the Way" thread pointing to this thread. I'll see if anyone reacts to it.

Maybe you should post a thread in the 2d board with everything in one easy to get place rather than searching through 20 pages of images and posts. Then just use this topic to get all those new images and models.

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

Good Idea, I made a new thread and posted a bunch of samples.. I'll post more as time permits.

This will still be my primary hangout, but I don't mind throwing some bait over to the 2d all the way boards.

Cheers!

edit: (800th post)

Edit2: And what is the size of each individual card? I got 67x95 px. Wierd number eh?
