hi

I am using blender 3d to create character models and objects for my game but I still have a couple of questions about blender.

1) Is it possible to create game levels using blender (I think it is but I am not sure )?
2) If so can you please direct me to some tutorials that will show me how?
3) Is it sensible to use blender or should I buy another program specily built for level creation?

Thanks for all of your help.

I would recommend 3DWS.

i would recommend blender, if you have a nice knowledge of blender already, then you can easily make levels.
Rooms are nothing more than an empty box, anyway, with this world creator, isn't it just the placing of these objects, my opinion is before you splash out on a product, try and create a level in blender, its easily done. like i said, hollow boxes with a texture...

Your extensive knowledge of level design blows my mind.

Just to extend from Oolite, you will need to consider the backface culling (otherwise in DBP it will look weird) you can basically cut the door holes etc. out, however, there are better ways of doing it, using 3DWS would be an easy route but it may not be worth the money, so you can stick with blender, treat the walls as box, resize them, skew them, do what you like until it looks like a room and texture them.

However, I would suggest a certian tutorial by Megaton Cat (I think its in DBP talk) that is based on level building, its not directed at Blender, but the knowledge is all there.

Oolite is actually a skilled modeller, however he was a bit vague

Yes it is possible in blender. Not sure where any tutorials are for it, its really the same as making any other object..The only difference is that it is meant to be viewed from the inside.

And what type of "people" would those happen to be?

My theory is: Don't try to create levels in a modelling app unless you're very good at the app. Meaning there are people who create full levels in Maya or 3DS Max but that's because they're proffesionals who've been using the program for quite a while. Sure you can "just make textured boxes" but that doesn't allow much room for improvment unless you begin to get into serious arcitecture & brushes.

You can do this I suppose in Blender if you're an ace, but programs like 3DWS and Hammer give you many shortcuts in this area as they're meant only for level design.

i was being basic with the "hollow boxes" of course there is much more too it, but for a first try you don't want to be going extensively into architecture but you don't need to be a 3d wizz.

I'm not sure how 3dws works but many level designers are just placing down existing objects and rooms etc, and those are created in an other program, programs similar to blender, just give it a try before you splash out on a product...

To each his own. I personally create 100% of my content & lighting within 3DWS, and the final result in DBP works for me:
