The next theme for the level design contest will be:

Wave based

This means you need to create a level where enemies swarm towards the player. The enemies must make their way towards the player at all times; so use of way points would be a good idea. The entities you use for building the game do not matter; just remember that it is a wave based game.

If you do not understand what a wave based game is; here is an example:

Are you allowed to enter? Or are you a judge this time. And is the deadline the 15th? Or can we have more than just two weekends?

Dont ask me, I just won the privilege to set the theme. I will be entering this contest too and no, I am not a judge.

I think the winner becoming a judge is a good idea.

EDIT:......unless they don't want to.

I dont fancy becoming a judge Keith, I wouldnt like to judge peoples work and have my own entry in with them. Its not some thing I would really like to do any way.

But do you like the theme Keith?

Yeah, it sounds interesting. My only concern is with the frame rates of so many moving objects.

Thats why I should have said to only use 7 enemies at any one time. So only 7 can spawn and no more. Ive done it before with my eye monster.

Yeah, just mess around with models like the soldiers and come up with a useable number.

I dont think Higgins should pick the catagory and enter. Thats why I had assumed he would be a judge. Because as he has just said, hes already done somthing which satifies his criteria.

Im not accuseing Higgins of cheating, it just that He has enevitably chossen a theame he has a better chance in than the onces he hasnt chossen (If you see what I mean) Edit: Mind you It will make my victory all the sweeter when I win

Also what the deadline (Cos 15th is very soon)

There's some good pointers over at the Game Design forum, Tinkers level design thread has a section on funnel level design.

I would say make the announcement, with the proper criteria; then give everybody the full month of July. That way we should see some exceptional levels, with enough time for many to enter.

Waves? Er...like a one room thing? I don't get it, and I also think it IS unfair that Higgins should be able to join this one as well!

Why is it unfair exactly? Considering the shear volume of entrants last time (all 3), anyone but a judge should be allowed to enter. If Higgins (or anyone who wins and decides the next theme) puts up any requirements that are unrealistic, then we can help him to modify them. I don't see a problem so far.

See the original idea was that the winner (higgins) will decide the theme of the next contest, and the judges and coordinator (who cannot enter either) will fill in the specifics. I suggest a bit more leeway this time in allowing custom media....just know that it is accessible.

Ok, I think the problem is that Higgins is probably more experienced than us at such a thing, and as thus is choosing something odd which he KNOWS he is better in than pretty much most of us. Also, what the hell is a wave?! Higgins didn't explain it at all, nor did his friggin game...

Tom just doesn’t want me to enter because he got angry I did last time; so he deleted my entry. I am entering this contest; just because I set the theme does not mean I have an unfair advantage in the contest.

Tom, if you had played fair last time and not deleted my entry, then you could have won; ever thought of that? It was your fault you had a hissy fit and got kicked out of the contest; so don’t try and get me out of it just because you never had a go last time.

Honestly, I am fed up of you; you lie far too much and I don’t like you as a person.

I would be very happy to explain it to you Tom; but why should I? You like to provoke me to answer back.

I explained it enough for any one to understand. You just need enemies to come towards the player in swarms. The game example I posted, if you played it at all; would have given you the idea how to make a level.

I do not have any unfair advantages with this theme, I picked it because I thought it would be fun to do, but like you always do Tom; you had to complain and agitate.

I'm gonna enter this one

...but what are the prizes? Lots of prizes were put up last-time and i was wondering how long this run can continue. I mean, sure, i'd enter my "X-uber-expansion pack" (not real) once but i'd get annoyed if everyone ends up winning it.

@Higgins,

We are not saying you are cheating, but the only person that you can be sure knows how to do a "Swam" level is you. I can almost garantee, that you didnt pick a theme that you thought you couldnt do

We are not even sudjesting that you dont enter. (As Keith said, so few people entered last time, that to stop you from entering, might ruin this as a Fixed event).

What is true, and I really cannot beleve you think otherwise, is that you are on "Home" ground. Brag about it. Dont say you havent got an advantage, you have, but that will in time just become part of the compition, the winner has the "Home" advantage.

A wave based game usually consists of just one room, right? Thanks for the explanation, Higgins, I was not agitating, I was saying that you had more of a chance of understanding it than us and as thus may have an small advantage, but then I could be wrong. Do wave games have to be one room or is it usually like a level?

Wave based games can be any thing, as long as the enemies move towards the player and attack them. I have played a game where you are in a lab and lots of different coloured monsters run at you; so you have to kill them all and make your way to the end of the level.

But the basic wave based game is where you stand in a big room and have monsters spawn from different areas that come towards the player.

It is up to you how you make the game.

Higgins can enter the contest if he wants as long as he's not a judge and as far as I know we are going to have the same judges unless one of them bow out...which I haven't heard about.
As far as I know the prize list is the same.Nobody has let me know they wish to withdraw a prize so unless the do so in the near future it will be the same.
As far as taking action the time for warnings has passed.Unless you are real new around here you know what the mods will and will not tolerate. If you have a personal disagreement you can use e-mail or IM to have your arguments.
And please, please make it a playable .exe.While it is truly unthinkable some of our judges don't have FPSC and they won't be able to judge the level if it is not an .exe.
If a judge can't play a level for whatever reason then they have the right to disqualify an entry.
The date I am shooting for with the end of this contest is August 1st.Right now that is the deadline.
There are the same basic rules...no cheating, stealing, etc.
Higgins has given us the level theme. As far as I know there are no media restrictions.
Let's have a fun and friendly competition.

A last question... Before I get started

Will there any scripts be given to us to get started? Or do we have to start from scratch? EG. Spawning from an enemy or anything?

Thanks

Ok, so the way I understand it is this:

Wave based: enemies coming at the player.
Single level.
Custom media allowed.
Submit by August 1st.

I think I'll give this one a try as well.

BTW: No one complained when the contest rules were made about the winner picking the next theme. Seems wrong to complain about it now.

You can use any media you like as long as you have a license to use it.
Higgins did not make the rules. He merely chose the theme of the competition.
That is status quo in these kinds of competitons. The winner usually gets to pick the next theme. They earn that right.
I will get together with JustOneOldMan at Ozark Games to get the uploading info together and he will probably post more information about that too.
Two very important things:
1. You must upload your level to Ozark Games.
2. Your level must be an .exe.No .fpms.Some of our judges don't have FPSC.
Someone will post more info about where and how to upload your game shortly.
