For the last few weeks i've been working on a decent world building tool that people can use along-side DBP.... well... here it is.

Heres some of the features the current version has:
World names and sizes
World boundary markers and a grid for easy reference
Easy point and click object positioning
World loading and saving
Object rotation, scaling, cloning and instancing
Export your world for use in your game
Game Code for loading the exported world into your game/program
Help files and an example

And probably what most of you want to see, SCREENSHOTS!

This one shows what happens when you select an object:

Light Mapping (from work on V1.00):

Thats all the screenshots I have to show at the moment. The program is fully functional so its available for download now.

Looking forward to some feedback (good or bad).

Current Beta: V0.9b

Looks interesting. Does it save Objects, bsp's or what? Maybe I'm going to try it out later, but atm I don't need it.

Light mapping isnt in this version, but I wass already working on it before you replied. I'll definatly make sure that light mapping is in V1.00, so far... i've made some good progress on it.

If you do make a map with the current version, you'll still be able to light map it in the next version. You wont lose your world.

I'll get back to working on the light mapping.... Looking forward to more feedback.

EDIT:

It does save DBO objects along side the saved world data. Currently it can only load X and DBO objects (hopefully more in the future).

ok, thanks for that... I was going to ask how you deleted them.

EDIT:
I've found the bug. All the objects disappear when you press delete without having an object selected. I'm gonna try and fix it now.

Fixed The stuck camera bug and the object wipe out when you press the delete key. No worries about any of these occuring again (hopefully).

I've uploaded the latest version. Heres the link to version 0.9b:

I've also updated the download link on the first post.

Anymore feedback would be helpful. thanks to those who have given feedback so far.

I have some remarks:
- I tried every button on my keyboard, trying to rotate the camera, but it didn't work. (So I guess I missed a button...)
- The UpDown gadgets didn't seem to be linked to the edits, which means I couldn't increase or decrease the value... (:-( )
- I tried every button on my keyboard again, trying to move an object on the y-axis. I know it should be possible (your screenshots)

Apart from that... I liked the buttons, the easy creation (though it could use a load object button) and the bookmarks very much (personally).
Very nice media by the way.

thanks for that Sven B.

I've still got to work on the controls a little more yet becuase they're quite confusing to a lot of people.

Quote: "I tried every button on my keyboard, trying to rotate the camera, but it didn't work. (So I guess I missed a button...)"

To turn the camera, you have to hold the middle mouse button down and just move the camera. Im still thinking of a better way to do it at the moment because lots of people have laptops, and laptops rarely have a middle mouse button.

Quote: "I tried every button on my keyboard again, trying to move an object on the y-axis. I know it should be possible (your screenshots)"

To move objects on the Y-axis, at the moment, have to use R or F if you are placing them, or if you have selected an object, you have to click the position object button and use R or F to move it.

Quote: "The UpDown gadgets didn't seem to be linked to the edits, which means I couldn't increase or decrease the value... (:-( )
"

I fixed those up for version 1.00 . You'll also be able to change the position by typing it directly into the text boxes.

Well to some up what will be in Version 1.00, heres the list so far:

= planned = working on = done

Better camera and object controls
Able to change object position, angles and scale by typing it into the edit boxes (as well as using the mouse)
Light Mapping - Will be able to save, load and export lightmapped worlds (objects already get saved when the world is saved)
Able insert DBP primitives
Load objects into your world without having to put them into prefabs first (although that option will still remain)
support for loading 3DS models (maybe?)
entity system - This will allow to give readable names to objects without changing the object's filename
Able to load and apply textures to objects
Able to jump the camera to and entity (object) by selecting it from the entity list (instead of spending ages trying to find it in a large world)

Thats all for version 1.00 that I have on my list at the moment (unless people request anything else that they think would be useful).

Maybe if I rewrite the controls, so that when you hold the space bar down, you can rotate the camera, if you dont have a middle mouse button.

Another Idea I have is to allow key mapping. That would mean people could set the controls to however they like then.... How does that sound?

When I try to download it, all I see on that page is a "Please Wait" button at the button. I keep waiting but alas, nothing happens.

The screenshots do look very impressive though.

this is good work so far... coming along real nice... I could only think that a "snap to grid" function would be very nice (maybe there is already one... didn't find it). Snapping to grid with a scalable grid is one of the most usefull and necessary parts of any good level editor.

apart from that, keep up the good work.

Well... I tried uploading the file using my laptop again, but the uploaded just gives an error half way through. So I'll have to wait until I get on my Desktop PC before I can attach the file to a post. Sorry...

Grid snapping, how could I forget about that?

Well, now you've reminded me, I'll see if I can implement it ready for Version 1.00. Thanks Bulk!

With Netscape 7.1 I can't get it to work.

I downloaded it with Firefox though, no problems at all.

--
VERY impressive work, and I for one am most greatful for it. This will be of great use to everyone I'm certain. Easy to use, and able to do all the things that need to be done, in a clear simple logical interface.

--

Collision would be nice. The ability to place an item and then have it drop, gravity affecting it that is, until to the ground so you know you aren't accidently hovering over something. Or just collision itself so you won't go through another item by mistake, and can then move it to the ground, the wall, or atop something with ease.

Not sure how hard that would be to implement though.

@Wolf Dreamer:

Since you mentioned Collision, I think now is a good time to share my idea on this topic.

I was thinking of adding physics into the program. Both Dark Physics, ODE and Newton would all be in it. This would allow users to choose their preferred Physics engine.

So that there wont be any complications, I was going to have it so that, while the user builds their world they can turn the selected object into a physics object and set the physical properties of the object.

Users would be able to choose one of the three physics engines for use in there world. If they decide to change the physics engine at some point, the progam could remove the physics from the world and allow the user to start applying the latest physics choice to their objects.

And to avoid any confusion with loading the level into a game, the program can generate the DBA code for only the physics enigne that was selected, rather than generating all the code for all the physics engines in one DBA file.

Then, to update the level in a game, you would call the function WLD_UPDATE_WORLD() .

There would also be a button to test all the physics within the WORLD program, to save time having to export the level and load it into your game to test it. It would do this by running the level in the editor with physics, then when physics is turned off, all the objects return to their orginal position (i.e. where you placed them).

Hope this doesn't sound too confusing, it's the only way I can explain my idea for collisions in the map editor.

The only thing I haven't decided yet is:

1) to have physics running while placing objects in the world. The problem with this is if you make a stack of barrels, then accidently knock them over, it could get frustrating having to re-position all of the barrels, back into a stack again.

2) to have collisions running only, while placing objects, then have a button to test the world with physics turned on. Then when it is turned off, everything returns to normal again.

And thats it. Thats my idea of a collision and physics system so far. Any comments about it (good or bad), please let me know.

EDIT:
Thanks for the comment Wolf Dreamer.

Why not just have it where only simple collision works for placing objects? As in, move to you get against an object, as I mentioned?

Otherwise, as you said, knocking over things would be a problem.

Supporting the two free physics programs would be great. Cucumber already did some work with Newton you might want to check out to save time. I'm not certain if you are experienced using it or not. Someone else mentioned they were going to add to that and make it even easier to use.

I never really cared much for physics. As long as you know when you are bumping against a wall, or an enemy, nothing else really matters to me. It would be nice to have a vehical moving quickly, and when it flipped over and knocked people and whatnot out of its way, have it realistically done, so the movement seems fluid as possible. However not many games will be done that way.

And raycasting is used for a lot of things.

Thanks!

Yeah, it is free. I've had no second thoughts about it. The word 'free' is even in the title of this topic.

You can include it with your games as a map editor too. The only thing I wont agree on is allowing people to sell this program as a stand-alone product. It is free, and will remain free.

EDIT:

@bosskeith:
I've already got a system like that working for V1.00. It allows you to add directories to a list from which the program can use to check for prefabs. That means you can have more than one prefabs directory.

@Wolf Dreamer:
Ok, i'll go with the simple collisions running while placing objects. And about the physics, I have used newton before so I should be able to manage with it. As for Dark Physics, I've made lots of little things with that.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone, it's really helping.

Not sure really, nobody else has mentioned this problem yet. I sometimes get a problem like this when im running DBP programs on my laptop, but that isnt very often.

I cant think of anything that could be wrong. There isnt anything that should stop it from starting up, so.... I dont know really.

Give me a bit of time to try and think what could be wrong. If I do/dont find anything wrong, i'll let you know.

At the moment you have to put your objects into the 'Prefabs\objects\' directory.

But for V1.00 im changing it so that you can just import them directly to your project or get the program to search other selected directories for media.

Sorry to double post, but I think I have a reason to.

Some of you maybe wondering whats going on with WORLD at the moment. Well the truth is..... plenty.

So far, I've got the light mapper working, but as you can see from the following screenshot, it isnt complete. The light settings cant be changed yet and neither can many of the light mapper settings. many of the of the light mapper buttons and gadgets have not been coded yet and only the light mapper basic settings and light map button are coded.

Anyway, here's the screenshot of my progress so far:

If your wondering what the sphere object is, it is a temporary representation of a light.

I still have a lot of work to do on the light mapper before it can be of any use to anybody.

Looking forward to any comments/ideas/requests on the light mapper.

Whoah.. Steady now.

Im working on a key mapping system for V1.00 so dont worry about not having a middle mouse button, your problems will be solved in V1 of WORLD. And for those who like the middle mouse button, well all you do is set whatever controls you like to the middle mouse button.

WORLD - Point and click world building, Light mapping, terrain editing, physics world buidling, matrix editing and texturing, it will do it all. And the cost? not a bean.... IT'S FREE!

Ok.

Im about half way through coding the light mapper at the moment. So I will post more screenshots when I have something cool to post.

Feedback is still welcome.

just got done playing with it. I gotta say it is awesome. It just needs undo tool. Maybe to move in the y axis you could press and hold both mouse buttons. I like your idea about the real time perview for the physics. If you put in the particle editing, of course it needs to be real time. Mabe some AI waypoint markers.Cant wait to try out the light mapper

thanks

@dononeton:

Particles? never actually thought about particles. Although this does sound a good idea.

Now you mentioned it, I do have an idea on how I could ad DBP particles into the program. Obviously, becuase im eventually going to add support for physics (dark Physics, Newton and ODE), particles will be included when using dark physics in the program.

Now the answer is yes, particles are now part of the list, although, like physics, it wont be in V1.00. I already have enough work to do with the light mapper, entity and collision system. Thats without all the extra bug fixing, extra tools, etc....

@dabip:
Shaders are already planned. You'll see that just by looking the "prefabsfx" folder in the WORLD directory.

There should aleady be 3 shaders there, although the program doesnt have a shader system yet.....

EDIT:
Heres the progress on V1.00 so far:
= done = working on = planned

Entity System (about 3/4 of it is complete). It works by allowing you to give meaningful names to objects and also allows you to jump straight to an object, rather than trying to find it. Useful in large worlds.
Light Mapper. I've still got to finish the entity system because the light mapper relies on some information from it.
DBP primitive support - Allow you to insert DBP Primitives and a few others.
Object collisions. A feature that can be turned on or off. Allows you to accuratly place objects without overlapping them and will color an object green if it is overlapping.
Extra bits and pieces. Im going to add an axis marker, pretty much like those you find in 3DS max or other modelling applications. It will allow you to move, rotate and scale objects the same way as you can in 3D Studio Max, by just clicking on an axis and dragging the mouse. (not sure how im going to do this yet though).
Bug fixes and changes. So far i've fixed 8 bugs that exist in V0.9. And I've made quite a few changes.
New help files. This may take a bit of time. Since there is a lot of changes since V0.9.
Support for loading V0.9 worlds.
