FYI Indi, a steed is a horse. If I understand correctly, ignoring the steed part, it just has to be any unique creature not already created that can be fitted with a saddle. Correct?

Do you have anything constructive to say at all? Seriously, all you do is talk smack on the forum and here is why: It's the only place you can. @MikeS: I'm not participating in this competition this round, and I think others should follow suit. Indi should have not been allowed to participate in picking. I vote for a new rule: Anyone who is dumb enough to mouth off (especially to mods which is why he got slapped in the first pace) and gets noobed slapped for it should not be able to vote for someone to win or pick the next competition. I think that is a fair rule that has no negative side effects what so ever.

Honestly Indi you make me sad. Everyone here is trying to learn and have a good time but you come along and disrupt the peace, not just in this thread, but almost every time you post. Please get good at life and grow up. Thanks 'mate'.

EDIT: Oh yes, and by the way. That wasn't me nit picking you in the first place, I was simply trying to understand what you had meant before I invested two weeks into it. Maybe pick up a dictionary once in a while and learn to talk before you open your mouth.

People like to know what the challenges are exactly, and using clear precise words should be second nature to someone who deals with paying clients regularly. It's part of why meeting with clients usually take so long, because you have to make sure you have the concept of what they want enough to go off and sketch the actual concept/storyboard based on what they've given and clarify anything you're unsure of.

What was noted, although not in the best way was just that. Rather than getting a nice answer with a simple "yes, that's right" you attacked him.

After how you were with me earlier tonight, and what got you that temporary ban in the first place.. I think you need to sit down and sort yourself out, do something to chill and relax or something.

Cause seriously, it's like you get PMS every so often and just roll with it. Just grow up for gods sake, you're suppose to be a mature individual rather than some pill popping ADHD 12yo chav.

As for the actual subject, I think it's quite an interesting one. Worth having a bash at; and really sitting out of a competition because you don't agree with how they are is almost as childish as them. Always hated that whole american attitude of "If I don't like something I'm going to protest by doing nothing or waving a banner, again pretty much doing nothing."

You don't like something someone does, report them. That's what the little angry face is for at the bottom of each post.

Perhaps if you enter something that gets voted best, you can pick the challenge next time. That to me would be a more productive form of protest, rather than slanting the ideas from those you don't approve of (which btw I've been banned and newbie slapped a few times over the past 5years) you force them either to show the skill of why you should listen to their insanity .. or force them out of the limelight by being better than they are.

You ain't gonna improve anything by being a pacifist all your life.

.. and I might have a bash at this, if I can find the time.

@Raven: I don't disagree, it's an interesting topic. Also, your probably right about the American thing. I probably should do this project anyway just to show him but I don't even feel like it now. Call it whatever you want but I'm not sure if I go as far as a 'pacifist' in this thread. But, I see your point and it's well taken.

By the way, I forgot about that button. Very handy little function.

@JimB: Nice guides, I might have a look at those some time and try to translate it into 3DSM. Don't forget that your creature has to be original though

Actually indi is (if I remember correctly) at least 30 years old. He has the most amazing job, and he inspired me to become the web designer that I am today. He's really a great guy.


Anyways, I might enter this competition, but I'm quite busy, so I dont know for sure.

We'll keep this competition running. Raven's idea(3D of a 2D character) will be used whenever we have another discrepancy amongsts what the challenge will be. Until then, regardless of how anyone perceives indi's actions, the challenge is on. Lets just have some fun and make some 3D goodness.

Well I sat down for an hour after reading the post and this is what I have so far. Its obviously work in progress. but I should hopefully have textured and tweaked by the end of the day. then just to add a saddle.

Although saying that I might not saddle it and put a different seat on it.

Hmm few hours later, didn't realise that UV mapping was so difficult, especially with something as complicated as an animal.

finishing off the base of my model and getting ready for some texturing and subdivision sculpting



the eye is just an image to give the impression of what it will look like when textured

it looks like a very simple sculpt and texture, so this hasn't proved to be very time consuming so far.

You don't have to compete, there are no prizes for winning (other than choosing the next compo style)

Mine isn't as good but I'm going to keep working on it, if I don't then I'll probably never finsh it (or get anywhwere close).

Anyway you should treat this as a learning experience. I'm sure you've learnt how to do a couple of bits either quicker or with a new tool or something. Use these in your next model. I could show you one of my first models (but I'm not ) and you'd probably laugh and say i can do better than that. Someone else is always going to be better (or worse) than you at most things. But if you give up those people that are worse will end up better than you purely because they haven't given up.

I'm guessing Mr Fletcher has *at least* 6 months of solid 3D work behind him. When you get to 6 months of serious modelling compare it to his Florp and you'll probably be very surprised.

Even though I can 3d model *quite well* I can't texture my creations , I'm in the process of learning to UV map. and lets just say I suck.. <download to have a chuckle>

You just need to practice. Plan your models ahead. Either whip up a concept or have a very clear picture of what you want from your model. Use lots and lots of reference images.

Relax, and let the polygons flow.

I might try to texture it for the first time. The materials are already setup for the most part. I hope we get lots more entries. This competition could set new records as far as entries go.

I perhaps won;t be entering as I am having Sooooo... many problems with UV mapping.

Maybe next time. Although if I figure it out I could prolly texture map the whole thing in a night.

Don't give up. UV mapping is the hardest part of the modeling process. It takes some practice. If you need to, keep downsizing your model so that it becomes more manageable.

If nothing, just enter it as is. This will be the first time I myself ever enter a textured model. Usually I just submit the model.

this is the concept for my creature.

i havn't decided what to name it yet.. it's an eagle/wyrm/dragon/dinosaur

the grey bits will be all scaley and dark, bare patches of leathery dragon/dinosaur skin. the gold bits will be shiney feathers.

this'll be my first time working with alphas so err, wish me luck!

Hehe, yeah, as soon as I saw Jon enter the competition, I made sure to get an entry in just to see where I stand. Granted, it's not near the quality of his model, I learned a few more things about wings3d and PSP8 that I didn't know after years of use. So thanks Mr. Fletcher.

Raven, why not make a quick mock up model? For these competitions, I like to always try to enter something. Usually it's something low poly, but if I end up finishing it, over time it adds up to a nice little database of models for quick prototyping with DBP later on.

Haha, thanks, indeed it does. I wanted to model something of that shape, because I pictured something like a warg(Those creatures in Lord of the Rings) as that's what first came to mind. But then I found some rhino pictures and that was an easy shape to model. I had to free style the head as I couldn't find any good views, then I added some horns in different places. Now it looks like a parasite/anteater, so that's what I've entered. Never know where 3D will take you sometimes without much concept art.

Very nice sketch. Judging by your previous 3D work, this has some great potential.

Hehe, okay I got ya. I wouldn't bother doing any 3D work without a mouse or tablet(The latter is on my wish list, heh) either.

Penfold cant you just apply simple box mapping to your model, that should give you the basic sides,back,front,top and bottom uv's?

I can apply UV mapping in Lithunwrap but the mesh doesn't line up with the texture when I export it back to lightwave (or through to DBP) I could Planar map all the parts ( the whole thing is a bit of a wierd shape due to the stretched jump and box map just looks awful).

You'll need to try to import through lightwave in a different format, perhaps .cob if possible. Lithunwraps .lwo exporter is probably outdated, or newTek's new .lwo importer isn't compatible in some way.

If nothing, try using wings3d uv mapping, or even download the new XSI mod tool and use some of its tools. Blender also has some great UV mapping tools.

Well I managed to figure texturing out for me..

I make the object in lightwave.
Export as a Lightwave 5 object.
Import to Milkshape.
Save as a milkshape file.
Open in Lithunwrap.
Make UV.
Use milkshape to reattach the texture.
Then export as a .x so I can use in DB.

so after all the I have tonight made a *very* quick texture for my cat. (Btw he's now called stinky, because of the all the **** I had to go through to get it to texture).
