I read that thinking "you should have told me you were going to Wacken" as all of them were there...and I watch all of their sets.
Out of those Marilyn Manson was the only one I hadn't seen before and he was big in my teenage years and I was not disappointed, I think he put on a good set, despite some of his weird tendencies on stage.
However, at Wacken, I was very glad to catch Tengger Cavalry. I always thought of them as some unknown obscure band I like that I probably wouldn't get to see. Then a week before Wacken I saw them on the line up. I managed to record their first two songs and they were very good.
Also, please don't mind my fingers, it's only a camera phone.
Quote: "Yeah...they said something about it being because of an anniversary, I think. "
Pretty much this. It was the anniversary of their album of Metallica covers, so they just did Metallica covers. When I saw them last time, I don't recall them playing any Metallica and mostly played their own material.
But what I liked about the set I saw, was they did the songs from the album as they would have done back when it was recorded and then slip into other Metallica songs, but done as they would have done today after they have improved over the years. Some of the solos done on the cello were just killer.
But bands I watched at Wacken this time round?
Accept, Europe, Status Quo (I am not even kidding), Mayhem, Marilyn Manson, Emperor, Megadeth, Apocalyptica, Grave Digger, Sonata Arctica, Architects, Clawfinger (not intentionally), Alice Cooper, Tengger Cavalry, Katatonia
I missed Boomtown Rats, who were also playing, not usally my thing, but I would have seen them for the sake of it, but they played on the Wednesday, which is normally just small unknown bands and we spent that night in the village...but looking at Weds' lineup, appears to no longer be true, as Ugly Kid Joe and Annihilator also played that day.
And the good thing is, most of those bands I hadn't seen before, so it makes it a good year.
