This is a side scroller WW2 spitfire game, based on an ancient pre 90's game called Sopwith. You basically fly around over a side on landscape, ruining zie Germans. Enemies will include soldiers, machine gun nests, flak cannons and airborn enemies in the form of me109s and bombers.

Almost all the media is done, so it's just coding and some graphics here and there. Hopefully this will be one of the few Fallout games that actually gets finished.

Hehe thats cool man. I like it.

Makes me want to play Battlefield 1942 again, and fly around and try to land a plane on the really small runways there were on it.

Very nice. I like how the bits of plane bounce around- is that box2d?

I do so look forward to taking her for a whirl.

looks fun, fallout. (and, nice animation on the mid-air u-turn!)

being of the "ancient" era myself, i alway appreciate "pick 'em up and go" games like this appears it will be. ie, if i have 20 minutes to kill, just double-click the icon and dive right into the action. (yeah, both puns were intentional, but fitting, no? )

definitely keeping an eye on the development here. thanks for sharing.

Nope. Very simple custom stuff. It's not true 2D physics, but it does the job for shrapnel and particles.

Quote: "i alway appreciate "pick 'em up and go" games like this appears it will be"

Yep, that's definitely the idea mate. It'll probably just be a case of playing through the levels in order and unlocking them as you go.

Quote: "He said that about his foosball game its not finished lol"

The foosball game got lost in my hard drive / backup wipe problem I had a few weeks back. So this is it now! And it's gonna get finished!

I've added clouds and a hud for the fuel, ammo, bomb guages too. Gonna add some targets to actually blow up tomorrow! woohoo!

Edit: That 15 in the top left isn't the FPS, it's debug info (the count of trees currently on the map).

BTW, I think it's a shame that you can't fly upside down. Part of the fun of the old game was bombing yourself in a stupid freak accident.

Update the vid:
Spitfire Maverick (4MB WMV)

I've added all the static buildings now, so civilian and enemy. Next step is to add the active ones (the one that actually shoot back), then there will be a good shell of a game. At the moment it's quite fun to try and destroy everything though, which requires loads of trips back to the runway for more ammo and fuel.

Fallout, flying against a tree AFTER delivering the cargo has effectively taken away any chance of becoming a pilot for you if you ask me :

Also, why the heck do I see you crashing into that tree twice? Oh... the video loops that part. Must've found it funny

It shouldn't loop that crash twice! Only loops it once on my version of the video. Maybe you have advanced "funny moments" recognition in your version of media player, so it gave you a reply automatically!

Anyways, pillboxes are in! Damn this game is gonna be hard. I can't kill the bastards without getting shredded!

You'll get to. I reckon I'll release a demo when all the ground defence forces are in. So just got to do flak cannons and troops. So if all goes well, in a couple of weeks. Then I'll do the harder to code stuff like AI aircraft.

Anyways, I thought I'd make a vid of just how much of a bastard those pillboxes are to kill. It's higher res so you can see it better.

Flak cannons have been added. Probably need a few tweaks so they detonate at the right height. At the moment it's preset for each cannon based on their altitude using a quick formula. But they're fun to get killed by, and in conjunction with pillboxes, they make a mess.

Ich mochte zweimal halben brotchen mit kase bitte

Looks good - seeing 'spitfire maverick' I expected something else, as the thought that stuck was 'wait I never sent you that spitfire model'

Look at this Fallout and I have both promised each to complete a project - I think we've come out with a new project at the same time as each other is a sign...

A sign that'll we'll be at the bar moaning to each other that we couldn't finish another project. If that's going to be the case, I'll meet you at 10 Fallout.

All jokes aside, would be nice seeing this develop - you're a good coder, so I'm sure it'll do nicely.

@Seppuku Arts

I will actually finish mine, as I don't suck as much as you. Of course, I'll be coming back to edit this post in the eventuality that it all goes horribly wrong.

@tha_rami

I still need to balance it all correctly, but in those vids I'm just flying around like a muppet, not trying to take them out, or get through alive. If you go full speed at the right height, you can get through that sort of barrage without little damage. I think the challenge will be trying to meet your objectives (blowing up buildings, destroying tanks etc), when those are close by. Either way, it will be tough, but I'll try and get the balancing right.

@Inspire

Blimps are a great idea. I forgot about those. I'll do hydrogen filled zepellins that blow up big style!

Haha, large, exploding blimps will be awesome.

Also, when you crash into the water, it looks like you are just crashing into a hard service, rather than water. Maybe you can make the plane sink slowly down and get a blueish hue when crashed into the water, and have water splash up.

@Alquerian
Yeah, rifleman and panzerfaust soldiers. Should be fun to strafe 'em with machine gun fire.

@Inspire
I do need to make the water a bit less solid. I might try and add some animation to it too. Splash particle effects would be good.

Anyways, progress wise, I've just been tidying everything up, so modularising code and functions etc. It's a bit more structured again. Ideally I will do the same with the collision code which is getting a bit disjointed.

Also I've added tanks, which currently roll around the landscape looking for trouble. I haven't decided what the point of them is yet. I don't really want them shooting at the player with their main gun, cos that's going a bit too far. I might code it so that they blow up friendly tanks and buildings, meaning the player has to take them out before they destroy stuff.

More over the weekend.

Tanks are mostly done. They roll around causing carnage, so there will be some missions where you need to stop them before it's too late.

Tanks (7MB HiRes WMV)

Also updated the sound engine (stereo/volume), increased the visibility of bullets, added a few more particle effects.

In any case, looking very, very good! I only think the tanks loop is too long

@fallout,

i've been watching the development here with baited breath. the progress is going well, and i can almost taste the demo (whenever you decide to offer one ).

alas, one thing has bothered me from the get-go: the fuel gauge. it doesn't "fit", to me. the "gas pump" symbol, in particular, takes me from the historic war-time era that the game offers and into a generic "automobile" vibe. so, i did a little research (aka, a quick search on google) and found this:

i found it on a website called [href]SpitfireSpares.com[/href], which has SO much detail regarding Spitfires, it's ridiculous. heh. anyway. here's the url of the page with that guage on it:

http://spitfirespares.com/SPITFIRESPARES.COM/pages/instruments%2021.html

(and, i HOPE that is the fuel gauge and not some other gauge; cockpits confuse me1). and, there's plenty of other info there if/when you decide to add more "authentic" detail to the game. (i'd love to see the whole "info bar" at the bottom be more reminiscent of a Spitfire cockpit, too. even with the MiniMap (which is a slick detail, by the way), it could do well).

anyway, changing the gauge is your call. i'll be happy either way with whatever Spitfire Maverick becomes. great job thus far!

The Project is looking great Fallout!

@ Virtual Nomad - The word "OXY" between the dials would lead to the conclusion that they are the oxygen level gauges and it is from a Lancaster.

oops, you're right! (well, you knew that already) good catch. i TOLD you cockpits confuse me. heh. too much to look at on that page. BUT, i'd still rather see a "generic" empty/full gauge than a gas pump. :/

Alrighty. I checked out that site and there's loads of stuff on there. I found the spitfire fuel guage but it's got a nasty great light reflection on the glass. Probably photoshoppable. But anyway, I need momentum when I make games, otherwise I lose interest, so I just bash out each bit quickly. Once the game is done/at demo stage, I may return to the HUD and improve it.

Anyways, glad people are liking the look of it. I'm working on troops now, but since Milkshape has added weighted vertex support, the animation exporter doesnt seem to work anymore. So having a few probs with that. More later.

Ok, I've done the main part of soldiers/troops/civilians, which is the movement AI and dying (since dying will be their main function). Next I'll add the panzerfaust and rifle solider code, but for now, here's me killing a lot of innocent people as they aimlessly wonder the wilderness.

Hahaha the civillian bit was hilarious! They're a bit docile though... I think to make it more realistic you should make them panic and start running if someone near them dies. Or at least acknowledge the fact that a plane's just minced everyone in front of them and is now about 6 feet from their face... People tend to notice that sort of thing
