Hey,

didn't make the entry deadline for the dominance war game art competition, and since, although i haven't worked on it as much as i was before hand, i had put some time into getting this beast done, im only showing this beauty shot until i can get some more poses finished etc. etc. which I'll probably be doing tomorrow.

anyway, here's the chap i made, goes by "Nos'tharuk"

i ran into a lot of technical problems during the creation of this character, mainly during texturing the diffuse, specular (and adjusting the normal map) maps all at the same time, which are freakin huge PSD's

for the sake of getting this guy finished i wont be wasting much further time on defining the artifact as i should have done (note to self: put more time into merging the artifact with the character's design )

anybody who might not know what im rambling on about, here's the website if you'd like to find out more:

http://www.dominancewar.com

for those who might be interested, its just under 9000 triangles altogether and all maps are at a 2048x2048 resolution, as allowed under the competition rules.

Could we see flat shaded, and just adv. texturing (no diffuse) and perhaps a shot of just diffuse with no advanced texturing? Really awesome job

Absolutely amazing John. We really need some of your tutorials. Haha.

TEH_CODERER,
DX10 can handle instancing...so it might even be possible in FPSC X10. haha.

Ah yes, I guess so...I know it can handle instancing but I didn't know still if it could handle instancing something as amazingly pretty as this! Lol! I would love to see it an action RPG like Sudeki/LotR:RotK or an RTS.

@Roxas - I'll admit, the story was pretty poor and voice acting was abysmal at times but the combat was great fun imo. I suppose another alternative would be Fable if that makes you feel better.

@Jon Fletcher- There are models and than there is Nos'tharuk! What i'm trying to say is that he's brilliantly and perfectly done. Although, I have a question, What was your inspiration for him? He looks like a half breed alien (maybe stargate inspired) and a Minotaur leg/ foot body. Nice job and I hope you win for 1 of your model's in the Dominance War. Best of luck to you,

This is beyond rational thought... its just too good. What I really love about it is the texture, it's extremly professional, especially the way the UV is laid out and the quality really brings it to life. Whats the polycount?

Max 2009 shipped at the beginning of April. I was on subscription until Max 9, so I'm now officially 2 versions behind. The new biped features look nice, so maybe it's time for another tax write-off.

It's a shame this didn't make the deadline, it's certainly worthy in every respect. The amount of detail is amazing - although I'd like to see how all that detail holds up at real-world viewing distance in a game engine - but that's really not the point of the Dominance War is it....it's to make the most insanely cool thing you've ever laid eyes on. You've certainly done that.

Sorry about the memory problems and large PSD's. Are you loading the PSD's into max directly? I use a cool Photoshop action that converts your PSD file into tga, and loads the tga into max instead. It makes making changes MUCH faster, without having to save gigantic PSD's for every little tweak. I think the script is called JJTools.

Again, awesome work. How much time would you estimate you spent on this?

actually, Max 9, which as Mark said, is 2 versions behind.

@ Mark

nah i wasnt having Max load the PSD, that would just be insane. i use a photoshop action as well to quicksave the .tga

i wanted to work with the specular map at the same time instead of after the textures were done, so that was another large PSD in the mix

i dont think i can pull together how many hours i spent on this (i should really start timing myself and being more organised ) but i think probably somewhere around 200 hours (and about 1/3 of that was probably just 'waiting' )

thanks for the nice words everyone.

atleast we can be certain of one thing... the time spent on this mixed with the defeat of not being completed in time combined to drive me into a state of mental torment, preparing more insanity to be unleashed next year

for the green and black legion!

I can only imagine...you gonna show some more poses? And the inevitable question: are you going to get this into FPSC. I'd love to see an X10 pic.

*LT Tatters puts Keith's Puny obsolete currency to shame*

this isn't anything to do with this, but i started this character yesterday and just started texturing 10-20 minutes ago, it isn't normal mapped, but it will be a test of my texture painting more than anything else (plus good clothing fold practice)

just something normal i wanted to do, rather than more big beastly things (might be GTA influence got mine, woot)

I'll be creating quite a few simple characters like this for TGC store to kick start my section. (texture doesn't take too long)

One of these characters will be recorded for a texture painting tutorial, possibly with sound (wowzers!)

Looks brilliant

Out of curiosity, due you render your normal maps in zbrush or in 3dmax? I find the 3dmax cage projection very annoying hehe.
