Danm, just that shirt looks amazing. I just can't believe you can achieve so much in Photoshop, when I have the same tools as you and my models/textures are poo

I'm tempted to ask you to write tutorials, but I know it's not worth your time, hehe.

I look forward to updates on the new model.

in 3ds max, too much fuss trying to control the friggin objects in ZB. I put up with the cage, and adjust it when i need to, but if the low poly is done right and the high-poly/sculpt doesn't extrude too far from it, there's not too many artifacts.

plus i like to do alot of cleaning up after in photoshop either way so its all good.

its fairly easy sometimes and i hope I'll be able to demonstrate such in the video tutorial. its pretty much like 3 or 4 layers, heh

That definitely would've stood a chance in Dom. I didnt get to finish mine in time either , too many things on the plate. But Im definitely going to enter the hinted map-making competition coming up in the summer. You in for that Jon?

I've gotta say the way you pose your character hands looks like it makes rigging really easy. I haven't had professional lesson on character posing yet but is that the industry standard for hand-poses?

Jon Fletcher, are you self taught? If so, could you recommend any good resources on learning Max and ZBrush. Lets face it, I want to make models like yours. I'll be at university for a few more weeks, so I've got access to a lot of neat toys I don't know how to play with. Any other applications your fond of for 3D work?

map making isn't really "ma' thang" but depending on how its laid out i could give it a shot, any chance of a link to this hint?

Quote: "but is that the industry standard for hand-poses?"

i really have no clue, lol. A good initial pose is to have the body relaxed, and the fingers curl (?) back like that naturally, which is good for having simply a hand bone to keep it simple, because that pose can act as holding something or just idle for walking etc.

but if your going to rig fingers i guess it would probably be alot easier to keep them stretched out, so there is less work to get the bones into place, and more space between the fingers to not make envelopes a pain in the ass.

Quote: "Jon Fletcher, are you self taught? If so, could you recommend any good resources on learning Max and ZBrush."

Yeah I'm self taught, but taught a couple things (hardly enough to call it as if educated). I cant really think of any really good resources for learning those programs, other than taking on simple tutorials from places like http://www.tutorialized.com, ZB however is the kind of program you just have to mess around with again and again, at least in my opinion.

so yeah, sorry i couldn't be more informative.

God damn you Jon Fletcher! Just.... Just go away.
You're making us all look bad!

Keep up this outstanding work! I honestly think you should just pack in Uni etc and look for a job in the industry. You certainly are good enough.
Or we should go into business together, you do all the work and I'll spend the money

Off topic: What's with this "Art Panda" stuff? What happened to redcore? Also, I saw the panda is pleading for a job. Do you get the Gamasutra career newsletter? There's lots of job postings in there. Game Developer magazine also has lots of postings, plus it's a good read too.

heh,

I guess i got a bit tired of the repetitious assumptions some family and select friends were making based on the name or something about the site, as if to think it were some business of a weird sort. They would keep giving annoying and irrelevant advice on investing on things, ideas like integrating a store onto my site, making and distributing ads for events that have nothing to do with games or game art.

They forget (or don't listen) that its merely a portfolio set up to give information, not to attempt direct profit online. I know a simple name change probably wont do much, but it clarifies that it's a personal site, and a little more informal

i may be on an entry level job hunt fairly soon, so I'll be getting lots of mags, checking sites and what not, to make sure i have a good selection of choices to apply for

not much done today, lazy:

basically ruffled up the jeans a bit, more detail, added holster and got rid of the shades. Not much of a change...

Ok enough about the signatures this is Jon's WIP thread, make a new one if you want to discuss them.

Jon, IIRC bungie is hiring for graphics artists and 3d environment modelers right now. I know environments might not be your thing but Id still check it out, they'd surely consider you with what you've got to offer, and you pretty much meet all of their requirements.

I'll get a job when im ready ya' gits

heh, but thanks for the support.

almost finished this chap and working on some custom animations:

Its just those ears left to texture then getting some unique animations done.

Vote for the next character!

1. Heavy gunner - beefed up dumb-ass, bullet belt across chest, wields heavy weapons

2. Female Sniper - (don't really know what to say, just peeked interest)

3. Explosives Junky - lots of bags, kind of a tech geek

4. Another one like the current w.i.p, though more close combat with perhaps shotgun/smg and flak vest

or whatever, open to suggestions. though i want to get 4 or 5 done for TGC store.

edit:

and thanks for that list Deathead, pretty darn useful

@Jon- I loved your almost Dominance War entry! If we get to vote for the next character I have one I really would like a fellow tgc forum member to make. 1st person to make a warrior guy with a big sword and shield; 2nd) Female Sniper; 3rd)Explosives Junky. Look forward to seeing more of your work. All the best,

I wonder if there'd be a way to model one of those standard SWAT guys with the barrier shields and helmets / masks / flack jackets, and have it so that the texture could be reworked to make a convincing gladioator holding a shield, with a torn vest of some sort and a gladiator helmet. Using the same model I mean. They both have a lot of similar traits, might work better to model the gladiator first, as any weird geometry the gladiator has could just be turned into a "futuristic piece of armour" or something for the SWAT dude.

Anyways just thinking, not saying you should do it.

Models looking great, didnt even notice the ears weren't done. The way the plaid follows the inner edge of the over-shirt looks a bit questionable, like it should be bent to stay parallel with the edge, but I might be wrong.

your not wrong, i guess im just lazy.

I'll give the pattern layer a run though the liquify distorting filter to line up with the edges

thanks Beast E, though i was planning on keeping this first batch of characters themed as civilian soldiers/rebels. If i were to create that which you mentioned first I'll probably put it to the Fantasy Pack

got a good idea on what im doing next and the appearance/clothing/origin of the character, unless anyone has any ridiculously cool ideas

@ RUCCUS

being able to create two completely different characters with the same model i can only think would be a great example of being able to 'ration' models, its something i may do quite a bit in the future, thanks

got this guy into FPSC with some tweaked animations, mostly different poses to try and avoid the 'hoppy' animations of a normal fpsc character. kind of achieved that.

the image above (right pose) is basically how the character looks stationary with a rifle. Also i have changed the crouch animation, into kneeling, which better suits being able to support the weapon and aim better (IMO, thats how it seems)

couldn't really get the FPSC shots much bigger, not much you can do with 1024x768 screenshots and an annoying FOV

edit: may hunch the back a bit more in the rifle idle animation, more into the weapon. also, aware of the deformation issue on the wrist, not sure why its doing that though...

Im sure you're a thousand times better at rigging than I am John, but it looks to me like the issue with the wrist is you didn't blend the vert weights between the hand and the forearm enough. Almost as if the forearm has complete control over the verts right before the wrist, so that any wrist rotation wont affect those verts since they're solely parented to the forearm.

Probably wrong though seeing as it rotates fine on the x axis .

well duh. The problem is actually that FPSC isn't recognising the spread out weights, it appears fine in max as neither bone has ultimate control over moving those vertices all the way around.

Its been a problem I've noticed in a lot of fpsc characters, just trying to figure out whats going wrong

@ lazerus

keep it up dude

thanks everyone, just finishing UV map for another character and will show a texture w.i.p hopefully soon. Female this time, kind of going for a Alyx Vance character style (chick from HL2)

Yeah that wrist area is BRUTAL to rig for FPSC, since the wrist turns nearly 180 degrees for some poses. No amount of blending will keep the volume on an extreme twist like that.

I usually just say "effit" and leave it as is, but if you want to get fancy you could add a dummy object as bone, add a position contraint so it stays locked to the wrist area, and use it to "untwist" the wrist for those extreme poses. I've tried using biped's twist bones too, but for some reason they really screw up the animations.

Have you seen the real life model for Alyx Vance? Not bad at all!
