Travis, your models are so beautiful, now lets see you texture these bad boys. Practice makes perfect!

Ok so I have been retouching weapons, and I re-UV mapped this, then made smoothing groups (it had none before ) I'll get a new texture on this. No high poly, so I will be handpainting the normals. Should turn out interesting.

Very small update, hoping to have time to really dig in this weekend:

After texturing, the sword hilt will be carved ivory, which is why it is left mostly smooth without a lot of fine detail. Fittings will be gold. Still need to do some detail work on the arm bands.

That just made my day. Thanks! I'm gonna see about some nice texturing tuts that may could help me a bit during this, It would be extremely helpful in the long run considering that I've very little texturing experience and my team is dying for a texture artist, looks like I'm gonna have to step up to the plate.

@quik

Thanks for pointing that out, you can always trust me to overdo a normal map, however that is usually the case because of fpsc, which seems to lower the depth of the bumps.

@ Ortu and Quik

It looks to me like the shoulder size is fine, it's more her biceps and triceps are lacking in mass, hardly arms capable of handling a blade, but the model is perfect otherwise.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it's really appreciated

@MrValentine: It will eventually be baked down to game ready.

@Quik: The shoulders started out too wide, I did a lot of re-measuring a while back and brought them in some. They do sit slightly narrower than ideal proportions I think; it helps to exaggerate the hips in a subtle manner.

I'm pretty sure that the part where the breast and pectoral muscle run up into the shoulder isn't quite right, that's probably what's throwing off the armpits.

@Poloflece: She is essentially a mystic/magic user and the sword holds more of a ceremonial/focus role than an actual physical weapon. Note that she wears no armor. She is meant to be fit, but not all that athletic.

I think some of the detail is lost in the lighting and angles, if I tilt the camera and get some shadow falling over the forms, you start seeing more of the muscle definition:

travis: Perspective views would be nice aswell :3 and a picture without the clay render, since the clay renders tend to take rounded areas away (they dont render them roundly, but flat)

but it looks really good!

I'm not sure what variant of the m21 Travis made, but the image there looks a lot more like the m14 I made (earlier on the thread). What reference image did you use?

@Vent
That's the M14 EBR, Completely different look and style altogether. Although, my reference could've been wrong.

I feel like I'm taking over the thread with my obsessive modeling
Anyways, here's what I'm probably most proud of this year, an AK47 rigged and ready for animation, complete with hands and all. I was going to animate it but for some reason, Blender decided to glitch up and go insane whenever I set a keyframe.

Hey guys, not bumping this thread with art, but rather, an idea for a cool little podcast type situation I've been thinking about. Basically, the idea is that the videos will show the progression of an art student, that student being me. The podcast will be updated frequently and will go over the studies i've done, how ive done them, why i've done them and what I hope to learn from them, which may help you guys out in what you study. I'll also tell you about things like gnomon and eat 3d and books that'll help you. A big part would also be discussing how to survive high school as a kid interested in art. How to manage your art on top of school, colleges, what classes to take, which path you should go, what extra cirriculars would help you, etc. And hopefully my knowledge is extensive enough to help some people, if I get a positive response on this thread I'll make a seperate thread for it. Oh and by the way, a lot of what I would talk about would rely on questions that would be asked, so don't be shy and I hope to hear your opinions about this idea.

And now to crits.

@travis - the gun looks good but its almost too small for the hands.

thanks everyone

My first model made with max 2012 student version. A turtle. Max is easier than I figured it would be. But I still don't know most of its functions.

Yeah, max can be a bit daunting at first lol... I've had it for almost a year now and trust me when I say modelling is only barely SCRATCHING the surface of wht it can do

Cheers,

Travis, it looked really cool, so I looked up the WA2000. It's crazy how much money those things went for when they were made, and the story behind them is kind of neat. Good job on the guns... and the house!
Ortu, I'm digging the model. The subtlety of the muscles is really nice.

Been doing some muscle study for crazy beasts:

Travis, the materials on your electric look really nice. I especially like how the bridge turned out. (It's sad, I've been playing guitar for roughly 16 years and I still had to look it up and make sure that it is called a "bridge" )

Thanks, Ortu!

Camouflage, I dig the scene. The normal maps on those pillars turned out really well. I've been thinking of getting into some UDK and making environments for a while... I've got it downloaded, but somewhat lack the motivation to get in and learn it.

Here's a couple pics of a dude I am working on. Sculpted in ZBrush, quickly retopod, then into max for some hard surface work. Then I will take it back into Zbrush and retopo the whole thing once I've got his metal bits all done. Thinking about picking up Topogun. I've heard good things.

Here's a low poly render (of the dude). The dude comes out to ~5600 tris /~2900 polys. Right now, the engine parts are running about 33,000 tris:

Here is a quick sculpted normal and texture map for some testing on what the final guy may end up looking like (Not a fan of the tattoos. I'll probably add some mechanical stuff randomly across his torso to break it up):

thanks quik yeah I know the vid is crap haha I'm just gonna take screenies from now on until I figure out how to get some decent video. And thanks coughmist you really should get into udk its ridiculously powerful. Your guy is looking good except the skin is very monochrome and kinda noisy. Try to get some red and blues in there to represent the blood flow underneath the skin. Keep it up

@ Henry Ham
That's amazing for only 424 polies and a 512x512 texture dude. I wish I could find a good tutorial for things like that.

Thanks, Camo! I'll keep in mind about the color variation of the skin once I start working on the texture.

@henry ham: That's a really nice texture! I notice on the turntable, the colors change. Are there more than one texture, or are you using a color map like for an RTS?

That looks really nice, Vent! The texture turned out well!

Stab in the Dark! I dig it. It looks as though there maybe a 5+sided poly above the eye which seems to cause some smoothing issues. get it down to a couple 4 sided polys and it will greatly help the smoothing as well as any future sculpting.

Nice work quik but take your socks off before you model feet again please or if they smell that bad look at some anatomy websites, There is no way your toes look like that. Your better than this, look and look again at your reference, that goes for most of you. Attention to detail will set you apart.

I really cant stress this enough to most of you and I and see it many times in WIPS on various sites study what you are modelling, really look at every detail it is so important to really sell the final image.

If you have a look at some of the top guys here and around the many forums I can guarentee that before any of these guys start any project they collect as many reference images as they can, every little detail.

No offence is meant Quik, start refining that model

´wow really amazing stuff here!

i dont do much 3D as i dont have the for it and because i dont know how to texture

this is what i have been doing on today, its not done yet and it will never be textured. its done in scetchup, and the screenshut has been photoshopped to produce a nicer look.

EDIT : would be a shame to double post just to show an update so ill just edit this post with the new version.

Interesting ship design. A good texture would really make that stand out. Any chance of a 3ds? I'm sure someone here would take a stab at it.

My work PC is currently on a 30hr rendering binge, so I booted up my old PC and started doing random models this morning.

thanks! I think i slightly overdid the photoshopping, but i was somewhat bored yesterday. whats a 3ds? do you mean a file with an ending .3ds ? or just the model in any format? i can only export it as .dae or scetchup file ( .skp) as i only have the free version

nice mug!
