Quik i wouldnt start low and go up, that will just scale the pixels, whereas if you start big, you can progressively go down without losing quality.

I didnt mean it like thatx) I meant start making the textures small, and once youre confident you start making them on a higher resolution. You should never scale the testure maps up

mm I dont know, i personally would suggest from the start knowing what size you need to work at, taking into account the importance of the model, how closely it will be looked at, and the engine that it will be used in. 2048 is usually the limit for games these days but depending on the complexity of the texture, you may need to increase/decrease that as you see fit.

I got quite a bit of progress done on a weapon I am working on today.

I would love some crits. I still have a few diffuse details to add. The normal map is also hand painted not baked. Just for fun

@Design Runner: the scale of the bumps seem quite large. I'd scale up the image or UV size to make them more of a fine detail than the rough surface you have now.

@Asteric: I think what Quik is saying is that to start learning texturing, it might be easier to start off using smaller map sizes (with an appropriate model for that size, not forcing a small texture on a prominent model) to get the techniques down. Then once the process is comfortable move on to doing more prominent models with larger maps.

doesnt matter if it sucks or not, main point is you taking initiative to google around and trying new techniques, thus improving.

Good luck with the texture, and the house looks awesome!

The weapon is actually like that. Otherwise I would have made the bumps smaller long ago

The problem I have with texturing is that my 2D skills are lacking and I hate painting over a UVMap, I prefer painting on top of a 3D model, however, Hexagon 2's texture painter has never got along with me, 3D Coat's and ZBrush's were simply awesome, as was Bodypaint 3D, but all with price tags above what I can afford to spend. Guess I ought to see if I can get Hexagon to give better texture results or learn to texture better from inside GIMP.

Anyway, I got it UVMapped and started work on the texture and placed it inside of Unity3D just to see how effective it is in my scene.

Cheers.

No full screen shaders, I just bumped the intensity of the directional light to try and match the sky sphere. It's a quite sunny day. If I was using full screen shaders, I'd be using Unity 3D Pro and if I had that kind of money spare, I'd also be able to afford ZBrush or 3DCoat to do the UV Mapping and texturing and it'd probably be lot better.

I think what I may do is keep to simple colours for some of the buildings.

yes josh, though i would love to see a scene-ish render of it :3 still awesome, very good job

Design runner: Thats amazing^^ I hatelove the roof of it... not exactly sure why.

@ this trhead: this thread was a great idea so kudos to whoever made it xDD It's finally got the 3d chat worthy of coming to - as i do get to see peoples work :3 (iam guessing most people just dont want to make a thread, which is understandable)

And since we arent way to many people on here (small and comfy community), this threead is perfect: you can post something and get crits on it, without gfearing for it to get lost in the crowd. ^^

Wow, a thread I made got made one of those things with the arrow at the top.

I'm getting the same vibe. Maybe its the tiles, as it goes slightly against the rest of the scene. I'll see if I can find a different solution.

travis: hands look disorted and arms should be a tad longer. Hips feel a bit wide for a make character
The legs look odd and doesnt seem to have any real muscle groups (feel like a slender 3dtoon character)

But it does look very good, love the head!

josh: Some interesting designs there^^ Looks cool though, the robes on the guy on the right could probably use more polygons and thus fit more details in (foldings and such), but thats your call x) Cool stuff

@Quik:
Well, his hands may look distorted because they're facing palm-first, and his arms are back slightly and would be longer if they were at rest position. I'm not sure what you mean by the legs though, he IS wearing pants lol, which is hiding some of the muscles, never bothered to sculpt out the wrinkles in his pants, which is something I need to do actually. If you want, I'll show you my reference image for the original sculpt of his body.

Quik, looks good! Maybe some smoothing issues behind the trigger?

Leongamerz, congrats on finishing it in 3ds max! I would suggest lighting it up a bit so it's easier to read in your renders, but it looks nice.

Hey guys. This isn't any special things but a few days ago, last Friday, I won a first place award in a local Technology fair for best Multimedia individual level 4 graphic designs. Now I am going to the state competition and presenting an enhanced version of my project.

Here's a video of what won the competition:

Those are square brackets... the last bit from your youtube url after but not including the equals sign inbetween these two tags with no spaces whatsoever...

There is a thread explaining using the forum tags including adding youtube videos...
