After reading a thread recently I started thinking... It seems the current gen gamers are totally oblivious of the games that started the current trend of sequels...

Namely Hidden & Dangerous... Delta Force... Silver... Rainbow Six... Swat 3... And many more...

So name your long forgotten games and bring them back in the spot light!!!

Swat 4 is one of my favourite games; just such a good and well-balanced game, yet I can't describe why...either way, I think the Swat series should be brought back in one way or another.

Love all those, but never played Silver. I also loved the MechWarrior series, and their lesser known stablemate MechCommander.
Then there's Populous, Commandos, Ghost Recon, and early Prince of Persia (up to and inluding PoP3D) and early Tomb Raider games made by Core Design. Then there's the Monkey Island and Indiana Jones series of adventures. And that's just the ones off the top of my head (seriously, where does that saying come from? lol).

Obviously, some of those series are still on-going, but I do mostly prefer the earlier games...

The madness games. Motocross madness was awesome, especially the mine field on top of the cliffs on the desert map, blew me away like team rocket. Midtown madness was pretty good too, especially the second one with the crazy Francisco map with roads going into the sky and stuff, good times.

I've played silver, its that RPG adventure game right? Medieval setting and you can control multiple characters. Never got past the burnt wilderness part after the castle/library part.

Delta force was my first FPS game for the PC and I spent hours and hours in the editor making missions. One I made I had the player parachute into the back of a moving truck and you had to pass the boarder guards and attack the base once inside xD.

I can't remember any.

Seriously though, not so long ago after some clearing out, we came across some of my old games. I was actually playing Broken Sword 2 earlier and I forgot how great those games were. Point and click adventures are where it's at.

Might and Magic VIII was amongst those and whilst I had a lot of fun on it back in the day, but it's so unbelievably dated. However, the DBP WIP, Sword of Ahkranox seems to promise the same gameplay, but modernised, so I can wait until it's finished.

And Myst III: Exile, those games were so beautiful, the CGI is dated now, but it was so effective and you had to go through great puzzles in a beautifully crafted fantasy world.

I am hoping to find my copy of Neverwinter Nights, I don't think I've played a dungeon crawler since that hasn't been as wonderful.

However, there is Summoner, I'd go as far as saying this game is pretty underrated (I can't even find a decent YouTube video) and I never got to play the sequel. The game was really addictive, in depth and so much fun. I remember loving the graphics too, but now they're really dated and heck the draw distance is laughable. I played it on PC, so I don't know what the PS2 version was like.

Finally, Shogun: Total War, I've not played the second because my laptop won't run it (tried the demo) and I am really gutted that my laptop cannot read the disk of the first one. I loved Shogun: Total War a lot, it was one of those war games that ended up being so much fun to play. Plus, who can argue with Samurai? Or the Ninjas I'd send out to assassinate leaders of other clans.

I've also avoided mentioning games I would normally feel nostalgic about, as to not sound like a broken record.

Spent many, many hours playing Outlaws for the Commodore 64 (1985), then Outlaws by Lucas Arts (1997). These were our favorites.

Elite on the ZX Spectrum where you could set yourself up to dock at the space station and then do a hyper-jump just before and you'd be in the destinations space station. Guaranteed to avoid the Thargoid invasion fleets.

Oh, and Mercenary III for the Atari ST also kept me occupied for a very long time.

I'm surprised no one's said it yet, Adventure for Atari 2600. Without Adventure, there would probably be no Zelda games.

All the original Elder Scrolls games, but Daggerfall has to be the most significant.

You can download it free here.

Spyhunter, A great racing game that gets incredibly frustrating, rather quickly.

The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The best text adventure game ever. The humour is spot on throughout the entire game, making it a lot of fun to play.

It's available to play online, through a java interpreter on Douglas Adams's website, here.

Awwww yeah! I loved that game too.

Oh and there's Desert Strike for the Amiga, that was a great game.

There were so many great games for the Amiga too. Monkey Island 1 & 2, Loom, Gunship 2000, Pushover James Pond 2: Robocod, Lotus Turbo Challenge, Zool, Eye of the Beholder, Lemmings, Soccer Kid (dude fights alien pirates, which is just awesome), Alien Breed, Prince of Persia, Beneath a Steel Sky, Ecco the Dolphin, Stunt Car Racer, Elite, Fire and Ice and so much more I've missed out.

Empire earth 3 on the other hand... Well let's just say it has less content than some demos out there....

G-Police is one of my favourites that never seems to get mentioned. BASS is probably my all-time favourite game so I'm glad that's been mentioned.
Golden Axe was a lot of fun as a kid, also Streets of Rage (which I was obsessed with for quite a while), all those co-op beat-em ups were pure fun.

The Warriors was the first good example of such a game since the nineties, it was a brilliant game. There was a new rendition of Golden Axe a couple of years ago that I thought got some harsh reviews, I thought it was pretty fun and reminiscent of the originals, not outstanding though.

Two other newer games that never got the publicity they deserved are Mafia and Scarface. Both are very good but get terrible ratings for some reason. Scarface actually has the best game-play progression I've ever seen: You start off driving around doing favours to get in on drug deals and selling it on the streets, later you get access to bigger deals and fronts that will sell the stuff on for you, you can also hire a driver and bodyguard and while you no longer need to work the streets you now have an empire to maintain.

Shh... you're pretty.

Oh yeah. I still have an archive somewhere of custom levels I built with the editor ...I used to use graph paper and a pencil to store them before I converted them to digital...
My friend called me sadistic when I set them up for him on my NES emulator.

Just what I can think of:
Final Fantasy 1 - 9 (10 was okay, but basically downhill after 9)
Resident Evil 1 - 4 (Only the main ones, no spin-offs)
Rockman (aka Mega Man) 1 - 6 (Nobody mentioned this game yet!)
Mario 1 & 3
Lode Runner 1 & 2 (obviously)
Galaga (C'mon!)
Gradius
Metal Gear - Meatal Gear Solid 2
Raiden Trad
Seiken Dentsu 3 (Never played the others)
Ghouls 'n Ghost
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
B-Wings (Hell yeah!)
Haunt
Nibbles
J - Nibbles (My mod of Nibbles, lol)
Medievil 1 (2 was.. okayish)
Age Of Wonders
Kula World (Yes, total g33k)
Tekken 3
Diablo 1 ("Now that is a biiig mushroom!")
Duke Nuken 1 & 2
Commander Keen (Can't recall which ones I played)
... I could sit here all night, I'll call it quits now

Agreed. Though, I'd argue that XI was great, if you like MMOs, it's certainly the best MMO I've played. The others...big disappointments. I tried getting back into XIII earlier today and the battle system just made me fall asleep. It's too basic and too automated. XIII 2 is meant to be a massive improvement, but the fact it uses the same battle system, there's no way i'm gonna play it.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the thread but I wouldn't say games like GTA, the Final Fantasy series, Resident Evil series or the Mario games are long forgotten.

Now Desert Strike is a game I had forgotten about, I remember playing it and finishing it and enjoying every second of it.

I wonder how many of you have even heard of this one:

Which is why I didn't mention them at first, but I figured they were relevant once mentioned.

Oh yes, that game brought on a lot of fun, it's a shame there's nothing like it out there anymore, maybe that's a good thing because it means we can still appreciate the classic. I might see if it's available on an abandonware site just to replay it (as sadly, we ended up selling our old Amiga). Might as well as I've been nostalgia gaming recently.

[edit] Yep, that was quick and easy.

The only one of the series I've never played!

I hadn't heard about this game until recently, but just before moving out of college for the summer some of my buddies were reminiscing over a game called Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64, and actually brought it and played it on the console. It was quite enjoyable - good mix of humor and nice, unique puzzle mechanics. Also subtly disturbing. Sort of a Banjo Kazooie exploration platformer deal. Played it for most of the night.

Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun. IMO the best RTS out there <you take a hold of a country, and push it to victory using military and/or industrial means.

Really enjoyable ^^ Latly my friend <who i play it with> have started modding it a bit <were running on the Modern Day Scenario mod, and modding that mod lol>
Currently playing as Egypt, and he as the turks, I current own over half the african continent, and he quite a bit of the arabian continent.

We're still not even half as good as any "big" european countries though..

I just remembered another one. To my knowledge it was never released in the us and the only eng versions are fan translations on emulator.

Bahamut Lagoon (SNES)

This game sported a very linear plot and was an RPG/RTS hybrid. The graphics were stunningly beautiful pixel art and the sound track was generally very pleasing. The storyline was less cliche than many games of that era and the setting was very original for a game back then. Really worth a play!

I really liked Delta Force, in fact the first 3 games were all really good. Rainbow Six was pretty good as well, I think that was one of the first games I played online - which is what a lot of people ended up doing, rather than mess with all the mission planning stuff.
