Thanks for the help, guys! I've been fooling around with Newton for a while now, and the problem I'm having is figuring out a way to make it a part of a game, but not the focus--- know what I mean? The incredible machine is a fun idea, but it would take WAY too long to create. With my luck GarageGames has a patent on the idea anyways and I'd get sued.

Fun and games aside... (Thanks Peter_)

AZP, did the concept of using a limited number of bullet hole objects and re-using that pool of resources sink in?

Resource management, be it polygons, texture memory, sound effects, or the number of active hardware lights is an essential part of game design. This applies to Newton as well. You can control the number of calculations that the physic library has to perform by selectively turning collisions on and off especially those that are no longer within sight of the player. It's all part of fine tuning the game to run at the best speed possible.

No code fragment, no clue. My guess is that you're immediately recycling your bullet hole instead of incrementing the object ID. Either that or you've blown your if/then/else structure and it automatically clears the bullet hole after you create it.

Sigh. I guess the remarks that I included in my original reply and that you ignored meant nothing to you.

Quote: "
` in your main variable initialization section place these
` adjust the range as you see fit based on program performance"

You DO NOT place...

firstbullet = 20000
lastbullet = 20200
currentbullet = 20000

... in your game loop. Those statements go near the beginning of your program where you are setting up your program variables. If they are in your main loop (like the shooting routine), they ALWAYS reset your counter and the logic fails.

You need to start thinking about programming and not blindly copy code fragments. You need to understand why things are done and not take things on faith.

OK. Remember this?

Quote: "` adjust the range as you see fit based on program performance"

Try a smaller value for lastbullet like 20100 and if that makes an impact.

Anyone else had problems with the Advanced terrain demo that is in the 131 release? It compiles fine if I rem the 2 newton terrain lines.

`col = NDB_NewtonCreateTreeCollision( 1, 1 )
`Body = NDB_NewtonCreateBody( col )

It just runs forever doing nothing seemingly. I let it run for about 11 mins before I gave up and had to endtask it.

[edit] and why does it only use 50% processor?

I imagine that the advanced terrain are quite polygon hungry. That could be an issue. You also might want to try the unoptimized version of create tree and see how that fairs.

[update: You might want to try the new update to the wrapper since collision tree optimization is one of things that was improved.]

Hi Everyone,

Could someone confirm in basic layman (idiot-proof) terms what Newton SDK is and what it might allow me to do within DBPro and what then the Newton DBP Wrapper is and again what that might allow me to do within DBPro... I've seen the Demos and get the general idea - does it intro a series of new dll commands? etc.

The Newton Game Dynamics Engine is a free physics add-on written primarily for C++ developers and such.

The Newton Wrapper is the majority of Newton GDE in a DLL form usable by Dark Basic Pro.

This allows the programmer to set properties such as friction and bouyancy as well as apply forces, gravity, and torque. There is a update world command that applies all these forces to the objects you have declared so they can interact with each other in a more realistic manner. Newton also supports relationships such as hinges, ragdolls, and vehicles.
