How many levels are completed so far? The untextured one shown way back looked very cool.

TMonkey: They have been numerous videos throughout this thread, on the last page alone there were at least two, just have a look or even better go to this site !
http://www.eckhart.da.ru/baggers/

BizarGuy: Hehe, none so far...as you may have seen from my screenies, my level making abilities are v.poor, and so far i have had only one person willing to model levels for me (Pudbawl !) who is doing a grea job on that one you saw the video of...im going to email him now though and see how its coming along.

All: If any of you people out there are willing to make levels, have good modeling skill and can keep within a set style acuratly then please post with an example of your level making ability.
Thanks people

I hope to have more for you soon, im currently working on mouse controled gameplay and have implemented strafing, but am now fighting some nasty collision problems !

Baggers, I really don't think it's a good idea to use the textures from the 2d in the 3d version. They look much too blurry and low res when applied in 3D environments.

Just wanted to let you know I'm still working on Jazz whenever I need to kill some time.. sorry about taking so long, but the texture is over half way there atleast.

Now, as for animation.. I have rigged the model.. but I have discovered that I'm not much of an animator, not yet anyway.. I will work hard to get good at it however.. as Seiken Steel really depends on great animation.

Anyway, still here Baggers.. and please keep up the great work!

Sam: Well you're looking hale and hearty little buddy.

Wow nice to hear from you man, hehe ahh someone else who still quotes sam'n'max "Stop him Sam he's gonna tell us a story !"
I know what you mean about animation it really is a world of its own as modeling itself is.
Its funny you post otday actualy ive just been emailing pud bawl about progress aswell...hes got some huge presentation hes giving but hes working on the level slowly as a stress relever !

Anyway good to hear from you, any chance of a pic of the WIP so i can put it on the site ?

Oh, WOW!!
This might sound sarcastic, but I think you are THE BEST DB PROGRAMMER EVER!!!

or maybe it's just your imagination!!

I hope I become as good as you..
I havn't really started studying yet, (shame shame shame!! )
but as soon as my studying room is done, I WILL STUDY!!!!

I was looking at that land model of yours at that site,
and I wondered, how did you make the land?

Mantis Games:
Quote: "This might sound sarcastic, but I think you are THE BEST DB PROGRAMMER EVER!!!"

hehe yeah does sound a little sarcastic !...thanks man but im definately not that good !...Have a peek at those doing the work with shaders, and those who make all these plugins to work with db...that stuff baffles the hell out of me still, but one day ! Yeah STUDY !...its the only way to do it...study study study...the forums have most of the answers already you just need patience with the search button.

Quote: "and I wondered, how did you make the land?"

Made a heightmap in PaintShopPro and then imported it into milkshape and then just reduced the poly count....its not very good really. Im dying to see Pudbawl's level, hes a damn good modeler ! which is what i really need at the moment, but gettin hold of them is hard.

As far as studying goes...start with the painfully simple, for next loops, print, maths, variables, Arrays...then head into making objects and moving them...i left out the 2d stuff as when i got Dbpro it had just come out and it was buggy and awkward.
But good luck Man and thanks for the compliments...im going to do some good work on that editor now !...im doing the bit that lets you design the particles effects.

Jonny Ree:
Looks great.. cant wait to get this ingame.

Dont forget the website holds all the latest update info and screenshots.

Just was playing with the editor and like thought i would show the effects that can be acheived really quickly.

These vids are only 200kb each so enjoy !

each effect took about 1 min of tweaking till i was happy with it...the sudden acceleration is the particles returning to proper speed after Fraps started recording.

Andrew and Jonny : Thanks !

==========================

Hey people, just decided to post an alpha demo of the editor on the JazzJR Forums so thought i had better post it here too !
Warning it is very alpha and so obvious as you imagine it has bugs!...the only really serious one being if you go into the
static object menu and click "OK" without selecting a file it will crash right out the program.
Other than that it's really just a lack of functionality.

Features (there are a couple !)
===============================

* Hold shift and move mouse to look around with the camera, if you first click with the mouse you will move foreward...right click to move back

* New level works fine ! (load and save dont yet so no point trying)

* Place entity menu works (other than the "blocks" button as this will require a different sort of menu i havnt drawn yet)

* The Previews work in each of the object loading windows...however static objects is the only one you can click "OK" and place the object

* The particle Menu (the main reason i uploaded this) is functional...you can place the particles in the level yet.. but the preview works and id like you lot to play with it please !...to add your own particles just put and jpg or bmp in the particles folder and then run the editor and pick it!...it should auto detect all new particles. Try and come up with really interesting ones ! if you are really chuffed paste it and the image you used up on the forums...it will be nice to see some new effects!

Well i hope i havnt forgoten anything, hope this is enough to keep you interested in this little project !

Cya

p.s. If you dont know where to start with particles try out the values from the pics i have posted.

http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Editor/EditorAlphaDemo.zip

-EDIT-

An exapmple pic of the particle system handling my avatar !

Care for some bubbles ? (Particle attached)

-EDIT-

Heres a zip with some more particles for you to play with I found them on free sites which was cool.
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Editor/ExtraParticles.zip

Have a try at these effects they are pretty cool ! Just pick the texture and set the values to what you see in the pics. (the ones above will work too)

Wow, thanks guys ! seems my mailback wasnt working so i didnt see this at first.

Ok well ive been working mainly on that particle system recently, theres some new bits im gonna add to it but that can wait a little while. Im currently plodding through the level editor...thing is its so easy to just come on here and find a little problem to solve so i end up distracting muself (editors arnt that much dun to write).

But during today i'll come up with some new bitsa on paper and code them when i get home tonight.

Dont worry im not quitting !

Oh and im in URGENT need of level designers...anyone interested in trying to make a level for jazz please post here...the levels are '.X' files so if you have an editor for them you can help !
As is so often in projects, you can code your heart out but in the end you do need some decent media, and while i have got slightly better at modeling (when i started i had never touched a modeler) i really cant do levels...i hope someone out there can help.

Thanks again people, i'll post again tonight !

Well i've just downloaded multiscape to check (damn nifty program !) and although its technically as yes, you can only make the landscape in it, as in only the ground, if you imported it into milkshape afterwards and modified it there then yeah, thats fine!...but jazz levels involve lots of walls and platforms so multiscape on its own really isnt the tool for it as far as i can see.
but hey maybe im underestimating it !

I understand that it only makes landsapes.

Long ago, a friend and I wanted to make an outdoor 3rd person shooter with multitextured landscapes, AND lightmapped buildings/platforms/interiors. We first created the landscapes in multiscape, then added shadowing to the ground using the paint commands and finally my friend coded a positionar program that allows you to click & drag lightmapped objects anywhere on the terrian.

I suppose you could try something like that as a last resort.

Hmm sounds interesting, well i am well into a program that places entities (objects, pickups, particle effects) into the game.
The main issue is style as the levels have to resemble, as much as possible, the original.
What i could also do is save a landscape made in multiscape, import the x file into milkshape and use the mesh decimation tools to reduce the poly count...could be very handy after all, thanks !

Yes you could do that. But then you'd lose all texture layers you placed as well as the shading which ends up making your map look like utter crap.

I understand what you mean about the art style. It would be really disapointing if this 3d Jazz game didn't retain the cartoon artistic world of the 2d version.

I'd say your best bet is to simply "create" a visual style that staystrue to the 2d game and lasts throughout your game. For example, here'sa few screens to show what I mean. Note how the guy set a flow for his world. (This was all created completly in 3ds max, but I'm sure it's possible it milkshape)

Megaton: Yeah thats exactly what i mean !...really nice simplistic style aswell.
Thanks for that, set my imagination wiring.

All: Just completed the texture generator. This is designed to solve the problem i previously had with walls looking boring as i could only texture them with one tile repeated over and over again.
eg: Here

How however i put the tiles i wish to use in a folder within my program and it will randomly generate a seamless texture for a wall.
This piccy only shows tiles of the same size (the slight graphical error at some joins is just me be too lazy to trim the tiles correctly)

whereas this one is made of various tiles of different sizes.

Im pretty pleased with this actualy !...i may incorperate it into my level editor for jazz so nice wall textures can be made on the fly.
