I'm not blaming them, but neither am I willing to spend hours and hours fixing hacking attempts. Chances are someone on these forums who really wants to take over hosting for the project. If it's not that it is simple stupid vandalisam, in which case it's quite likely whoever takes over hosting for the site will suffer the same problems with hackers.

The simple fact of the matter is that this site can affect other sites I run. I've locked off it's resoruces to prevent damage to them. I host over 28 sites, of which half are open source, freeware projects that are alot more active then Blackout, who's updates seem to have stopped comletely in recent months. It's not fair to the other projects of which I provide hosting for, to have one site running which is a prooven weak link. This is the only site that's being hacked over and over again.

I warned that this would happen. All I can hope, is that whoever was hacking this website regrets what they did enough, not to do it to other harmless open source projects. Either way, while blackout was promising, it's now infinately more trouble then it's worth to continue hosting.

P.S.

I've also asked people both in person and on these forums to send me an e-mail if they saw that the site had been hacked again, since then it's been hacked 13 times, and no one bothered. Had people done this I would have setup a system where an e-mail sent to a certan address would trigger a reconstruct script restoring the website to it's previous state, this would have saved me time and effort, but frankly I doubt anyone cares or would bother to do it. So it's not worth my time writing the script.

So what about this project? I haven't seen anything actually completed with it in a while... I'm starting to get some ideas of my own,so eventually I may take some part in programming in this. Of course,since I don't program in dbp anymore,I guess I would be re-writing the engine for c++,but good thing about that would be the use for some awsome libraries lying around. But then again,I bet people are gonna be pissed at me or say I'm an idiot for saying this,but oh well

Edit: This also means if people have any c++ experience,when I get my core engine finished(my engine is called WarCry),I'll need some programmers to help me as well. Perferably experience with the Newton sdk and or the Irrlicht sdk(CUZ IRRLICHT ROCKS!!!...sorry). Also GameMonkey scripts will be used(once I learn how to use GM...). If you all disagree with this plan of action,well,I guess I'll make another open source game! Zombie Deathmatch!!!! lol.

Edit2: basic Newton almost integrated(box and tree collision). There will be more like joints soon too. Then I can actually start on other less needed parts of the engine(GM SCRIPT!!!).

Edit3: Basic Newton integrated and working correctly!(this is the first time the newton sdk worked for me,that thing is evil!).I'll work on getting more types of collision in now

Edit4: All Newton collision primitives integrated into my engine now. Everything works smoothly. I may or may not do joints right now,it depends on what I want to do Truthfully,I'm not sure why I'm posting this here,but oh well. I guess programming is just not as fun unless you actually share it with people

Working on DBIrr. Done so far : objets,lights,cameras,billboarding. To come: newton game dynamics support,Animation blending with cal3d.

Call me stupid, but... Why are you trying to rewrite this entire game yourself? Also, why are you calling your engine DBIrr? Are you trying to integrate a 3D engine into a programming language that already has a 3D engine? You're using C++, right? Why does it have "DB" in its name?

@FoxBlitz - The sig is from a while back,I was just to lazy to change it. I just wanted a c++ open source engine myself,and add complete modding ability,sorta like what Gary's Mod for hl2 is. It probably won't even have the same name,but I may just base what I'm doing off of what the Blackout engine is.

I've not received any word from Hamish or any other Blackout programmer, I think this project died a quiet death a while ago. They've had more than enough offers to get another site put back up, they own the www.blackoutgame.co.uk domain name, and have not bothered to redirect it to anything. Sorry Lorisils, but no one who was actually doing any work on this project seems even remotely bothered that it's failed. If they did, I feel sure they'd have made a major announcement on this forum at least. Lets face it, that last post Hamish made was back in July.

I think it's time for someone else clever to found an open source FPS project, given that Blackout was open source itself, I see no problem with them taking the blackout code and putting together a new team. I'm not going to do it, as my current interests lay elsewhere, but it they want a tempory subdomain on another site than they are more than welcome to ask me for one. If anyone wants the old code let me know, I've got a backup of the website, so it's not lost.

If anyone is interested in continuing this Open Source FPS project, I would be willing to help establish the leadership team (I would not be on it, or only for a while until the team was established). I would also be willing to help create the base source code for the project and give it a solid foundation to build on (we would use our OpenMMORPG code as the base - since it could be converted to FPS fairly easily, or we could use the FPS code already established, or a combination of the two).

Three things would be needed before I would make any commitments:
1) Three, or at least two, people showing dedicated interest in re-establishing and leading the project: Details to be determined.
2) Roughly ten folks (total - including leadership) interested in resurrecting this project; and I mean interested, as in active participation, not just saying "I am interested". Again, the details would be t.b.d.
3) At least one member of the leadership team needs to be a seasoned coder.

Im very interested in contributing to an open source FPS. I have some DB and other coding experience, I just havent been using DBP lately and me not using stuff I bought upsets me. Anyway, I am serious about contributing, I cant do a lot ATM because my knowledge of DBP is somewhat lacking but I feel this would be a good starting place for some learning and a project like this would keep me interested. A project like this would indeed teach folks on it a lot. I know I have personally learned a ton from the OMMORPG project, and will continue to learn.

Well, that's about 1.5 folks interested. Any more?

Or is there another game genre folks are interested in? I am positive that an RTS or a Sim in DBPro would be relatively easy. It would be a short-term project - about a year or less. And we have a huge library of base code we can start with.

lol, you're actually right, Hamish IS getting a life btw, he's almost certainly not returning to these forums he has a full time job, working up some money for uni. I'm sure i can convince him to ditribute all necessary source files and media.

it would be cool for this project to regain conciousness, but there are problems.. ie, the programmer needs to know/learn how to use newton physics, as hamish made a point of using only freeware (so no-one needs any licences to play it) also, there wasn't really a team last time, more of a selection of people throwing things at the project when they felt like it. he told me thats why it didnt really work in the end, and stopped his input.


btw, i'd be happy to design/model a level or character or three, if i see any life in the project. promise.

Okay, need a few more interested parties. Anyone up for declaring a commitment to the project as a core member?

We will be forming a Core of Three dedicated individuals to lead the project.

I will agree to be one member of the core for short period of time. But we would need at least two other core members, and a few other interested contributors, to really get this project going again. Also, one of the core members (besides myself) needs to take on the role as lead coder for the project.

I am going to post a quick request thread over in the DBPro Discussions to see if more folks are interested.

i've never done anything like this before, ad i don't know what i can say about my coding skills... I'm not a novice but there are alot of holes, so I'll try (I'll learn) my hardest!

I'm certainly interested in helping out where I can, but unfortunately, my abilities are limited by a terribly slow computer, so I likely wouldn't be able to run the game to test it. I can however help with 2d graphics and some 3d modelling (milkshape 3d... ). If I can get the program to run on my computer (It would have to be very lo-res and not too demanding) then I would love to help out with the coding as well (Don't let my join date fool you, I have several years of experience). I do not know if i'm "good enough" , but i am interested in joining as a coder.

I could also be part of the "dedicated" members, but i have to warn you i won't have large amounts of time until after the NVidia competition... though i certainly do have reasonably large amounts of time, i could probably work on this 30-60 minutes a day during the competition

Yeah, well i have been interested in the project since it was started (i was the first responder on the original thread haha) but i didn't have nearly enough experience with coding to join, and it seemed like there were more than enough people already, so i didn't. i instead made one really high poly, and not very useful, model of a gun (the "helgun", for helium gun )

but anyway, now that i have some experience, there aren't a plethora of people, and it actually needs help i do want to join.

nice, but it think that the 'core' members will be obvious once we see how much input individuals have into keeping this going.

@ RiiDii - very nice work getting this organsied, Hamish put all the main files into rar format for me, which i am now uploading into the ftp. it is about 237mb however and will take a couple of hours. meanwhile, ill do some sketches for player ideas, i'm trying to think of a cool kinda semi-cartoony semi-realistic look.

@ everyone in the world - ANYONE can contribute to this project...

ANYONE! but notes for people who wish to make a useful contribution:-

- modellers: if you decide to make a model, it would be really useful if you could try to texture it, half the models from the last project were incomplete, and ended up just laying around unused because no-one wanted to improve them. the only things that were ever really complete were minkey (thanks wigget ), the kasbah level and a few weapons and miscellaneous objects. go for big projects, like levels, weapons or characters, they are the three things that this game needs to finally be playable.

- coders: feel very free to do anything you wish with the code, last time people were afraid to touch the code because they thought that it belonged to Hamish. which is a fair assumption, seeing as he wrote 95% of it. He wanted to point out that he never saw it as HIS code, and was very pleased to see people contribute, like benjamin, who made the network plugin. It's fairly well organised, and doing things like placing new media into it shouldn't be too difficult, and to be fair, online play was almost complete when the project started to die, so what we really need is some players and some cool levels.

Hamish liked to think that there wasn't ever any theme to this game, so we could have, whatever the hell weapons we wanted, or whatever the hell characters you feel like seeing in the game, and especially, go all out on the levels to make them as farfetched as possible. we just want to make a game thats fun to play. no stoyline or theme.

Can you check if using the name BlackOut going forward is acceptable to Hamish. The project was open source, but the name may not have been.

Also, we have a forum and wiki being set up right now. We also have an SVN paid for the next six months. So we are really up and running.

I have no idea. I have not seen where the project is and what needs to be done. I guess models are always something that can be used. I push for low polygon models, but high polygon models are welcome too. They can be used for cut scenes or intros. And, we can always lower a high polygon model to a lower polygon count.

@ H4ck1d - u interested in some modelling? because as i said in my previous post, we need characters, weapons (come up with some crazy ideas for weapons if you like), levels (download deled, levels are awesome to make), you can have a go at making some objects for the kasbah level, such as market stalls, maybe some fruit to go on them (shooting through fruit could be fun, so maybe some destructed fruit , we could also have fun with the spray there, enough now.) buckets, rolled up carpets etc. weapon pickups maybe - just low poly weapons that we can have lots of lying around.

programming wise, ill have the sources up today, and all the media that already exists (my dad restarted the computer whilst i was halfway through uploading, grr.) it will be at least 6 hours til it's all finished.) but when thats done, people can play around with the code themselves, to see where everything is, and eventually improve on it.

Allright, I suppose most of us don't really have any idea where this project is at for the moment . So I guess I'll do some modeling right now! I made this model yesterday with this project in mind, it's an automatic pistol of sorts, a picture is attached to my post. I've also been working on some lens flare for another project that would be easy to implement if it doesn't have it already. That's all I've got for now!

I finished a basic Humanoid model and now i want to know what to do with it, ie. what is going to be the first real blackout character? i'm thinking of taking it over to the 3d section for suggestions, seeing as it's "open source" so it should be open to everyone right? also, i'll probably get more feedback over there.

As for the pistol, I somewhat agree with you, I had placed an outer "shell" on a more pistol-like design (the shell is the black part), so I can remove it without any trouble at all and it will look more like a pistol

glad u like it. it's a 2d concept , but i reckon i can do it well with around 1000 polys, maybe less

Oh, whoops. Nowadays you can't tell the difference between a 2d mockup and some of those fancy stylized render jobs.
