Talairina: I'm a tired old man, sarcasm is the only thing I have left.

Bullshock: Here's the plan for the level. Normandy, you get a call from your CO that you're to report to the airfield for further orders. They are for you to fly back on a cargo plane to pick up a new secret weapon at Area 51. You arrive just as the aliens from Planet X are arriving to retrieve their ship. You're captured, taken back to Planet X, and find yourself in the middle of an alien civil war. Fade to black...

End of storyline, now the level starts. You're taught to fly a Tie Fighter and give a robot and a big furry companion named ChupaCabra, or something like that, and...........well, you get the idea.

Sarcasm, just one more service I have to offer...

Indeed. I am uploading my level to Filefront now. I shall soon give you guys the link to download it-hope you like it.
By the way, the sound I mentioned earlier is still in the level, so I am now releasing it. It is a growl sound to make the Player jump, it is attached.

Okay.
Bullshock is making a valid point. However, since Keith and Rich have volunteered to be the judges i am confident they can decide whether the game is a viable WWII themed level.I guess now would be a really good time to go over the criteria the judges will look for:

1. Ambience.Lighting, sound, use of media, segments, etc.Anyone can make a room or level. It what you do with that level that matters.

2.Playability.This is basically whether the player can start playing the level and do a reasonable job of navigating, etc.
If a game requires two college degrees to play or if someone is swearing at the developer the whole time they are trying to play then the level is not playable. Also, the level has to be functional from start to finish. For example,if you lock a door please provide a key. These are just examples.

3.Keeping with the theme of the contest. The contest is WWII themed. If you open the first door and,lo and behold, you are on the starship Enterprise, you have not made a WWII themed level.Bad example but you get my point.

4.Innovation.This is simply how you use the media, objectives, etc.
People who come up with unique ideas and implement them are innovative.
The last two criteria are the most important by far.

5.The actual level design.Since this is what the contest is about this will obviously weigh heavy in the judges' decision

6.Gameplay.THE most important element of evaluating any game is the gameplay factor. Is it fun?Does it have a "hook"?All of the levels will be first person shooters (I hope). What sets yours apart?
The judges so far are Keith and Rich and I trust their decisions and I am sure given their experience that they are perfect for the job.I am looking for a third judge at the moment. If I don't find one that means I will have to be one in case of a tie.
At the end of the day scores are meaningless. The judges will pick which level they think is the best and their decision is final.
Once the contest is over and the winners are picked I hope to make all of the entries available to everyone so they can play them and decide for themselves.Feedback is invaluable.

I updated the first post to reflect the extension of the deadline and I am getting ready to update the prize list.I will attempt to keep this in this thread for now and hold off starting another one for the moment.

As far as I am concerned if you are doing your own voicework you don't have to release it.Music and sound effects are a different story.

One of the key things that attracted me to this competition was/is how it promotes the creation of materials to be made available to the wider community.

Whilst I understand just how protective many developers feel about their creation I do personally feel that since this is a Competition for (and by) the Community then the media created should be made available to the community.

The only (if any) exceptions I see to this rule is media that is in someway personal, e.g. Voices that are the developer's own voice or say a family photograph that is scanned for use in the game.

Cheers, Rich.

Hmm, I appear to be having trouble uploading my file to Filefront. I select the ZIP Folder I put it in, then click Upload and it says Connecting. I went away for about half an hour and it still said Connecting when I came back. Any thoughts?!

Go to www.OazarkGames.com and get in touch with Keith or JOOM.They have a place to upload your level and an FTP app if you don't have one.We want to keep all levels in one spot. That, and Filefront sucks.
I have to go with what Rich said.

"The only (if any) exceptions I see to this rule is media that is in someway personal, e.g. Voices that are the developer's own voice or say a family photograph that is scanned for use in the game."

So we'll go with that.
Make sure you upload your level to OzarkGames because that is where the judges will be looking for them.I will be updating the prize list shortly.Thanks.

Myself, KeithC and Sharth I believe.

I think it best to wait till the deadline so that all the entries are in and can be compared side by side.

Reminder:
Contest deadline is June 15th.Please make sure you have your levels uploaded by then. After the contest is over I hope that we find a place to host all of the levels or maybe Ozark Games will let us keep them there. That way everyone gets a chance to play them.
If you have not started your level yet, look at the prize list.It is impressive.
Once again, thanks to Keith and Just One Old Man and the fine folks at Ozark Games for donating time and the space on their website,
the judges for graciously donating their time (i couldn't have gotten three better judges if I'd gotten on my knees and begged),
to all of the people who have donated prizes, and last, but not least,
to the people who are taking the time to make levels and enter the contest.Thank you all.

The winners get first pick at a prize according to their ranking (i.e., 1st gets first pick, second gets second pick, etc.), right? I'm pretty sure that Sprite Pack is gonna go fast

Yes that would be correct . We could do with more entries, hopefully that will happen as the deadline draws closer.

Its already been mentioned, but getting the compo mentioned in the next TGC newsletter would help a lot I imagine, the deadline (for the next TGC newsletter) I believe is the 30/05.

Cheers, Rich.

EDIT: To any MODs reading this, I personally believe that this community effort to put together a competition that in many ways promotes a sharing of media would be better served if it was in the Showcase area and if at all possible stickied, at least until the deadline.

I feel that effort should be rewarded and amongst all that is talked about on these forums it would be a shame if this was overshadowed by the more generic posts. Just my opinion.

I am still waiting to find out how many entries we actually have at this point.I e-mailed Rich about mentioning the compo in the June newsletter but I haven't heard anything yet.The deadline is June 15th so I hope everyone gets their levels uploaded by then. Thanks again for your donation and for being a judge.

From checking the FTP site I believe Tom0001 is the only entrant thus far. It's great to see people so readily giving their support with prizes etc but a bit more interest in the area of entries would certainly help.

@ Sunflash How is your entry going?

cheers, Rich.

EDIT: Just to say that I do believe this is a really good idea and I'm happy to put my money where my mouth is so to say. We need more things like this on these forums.

I don't know what else to do to generate interest. We have gotten together an impressive list of prizes, everyone who enters will get some exposure for thier talents and it seemed like a good way to bring the community together.
Maybe we will have people uploading their levels right before the deadline.
If Rich mentions this compo in the June newsletter maybe we will have a few more entries.

The judges are not going to see them until after the contest deadline.
