I'm quite bad at javascript, but is there a way to detect middle-click?

I mean, if you can detect a normal click, surely you can detect other buttons, too?

I have no idea, as far as I know any event handlers are supposed to execute before the default action (opening the link) occurs. But I don't really know all that much about JS either!

Why not just have it open in a new window. That'll save a but of trouble. I have IE7 and FF to open new windows in tabs. So By opening in a new window, you're sort of avoiding that middle click.

Golden rule of web design is not to open a new window unless you really need to. Maybe times are changing though, and plus our target audience will most likely have the newer tabbed browsers.

Trying to open the links in a new window doesn't work at all for some reason... I'll have to figure out what to do about that one.


New Features:

* A popup description of links to aid the MODs.



Bug Fixes:

* Posting moderation messages MOD->User and User->MOD now work.
* When posting mopderation messages and submitting/revising/editing links the data is now made safe before entry into the database.
* When a revision entry is merged into a link entry the moderation messages associated with the revision merge also, instead of being lost.
* Users are still able to read their moderation messages once a revision merger has taken place.
* Display bug fixed with the popup description.


Now I think theres only two more things left to do, correct me if I'm wrong!

* Add the warning for the adult content.
* When a user receives a moderation message they should be emailed.

Hmm I'm not sure how to do the PM/email user when they get a new moderation message, because the web ring doesn't append messages to any particular user, but instead appends them to a submission or revision of a link. And there could be many revisions...

I think it might require quite a big rewrite of the moderation messages code to be able to facilitate PM/emailing users...

Maybe it could be done so that once revisions are merged only the original submitter of the link gets emailed, and when revisions are separate, the submitter of the revision gets emailed...

Alright, just scoured this thread, and here's the (AUP) points we'd agree'd on:

You need to put a;

"By clicking submit, I agree to the Terms & Conditions"

text at the bottom of the submission form, just to make it a little more obvious

Also, what happened to the html for linking back to the webring?

Just put the code I gave you straight onto the page (maybe upload the webring logo to the junkyard server and put that link in?)

Also, I noticed on your site, you have it copyrighted as 2005-2006, you may want to change that to 2005-2007

Which website are you talking about here? The webring has 2006 - 2007 and Coders Turf has 2004 - 2007.

I have no idea, however I assume it is buried in this thread somewhere. I want to try and use the method which Google Adwords uses, whereby the actual code is kept on the CT server, and the websites just have 1 or 2 lines of code to include. That way if/when we update the layout/style/whatever of the link-back, it will happen for all websites automatically.

The actual code is about 5 posts ago (the one before I posted the AUP points). What I was wondering was why it wasn't on the webring

But, you answered that.
Doing it like adsense means we have to make it very customizable, allowing the user to select exactly how they want it to look. Otherwise, we're changing the design without telling them, possibly breaking their site's look.

It's probably easier if we just offer some different solutions, and they choose the best that suits. Otherwise, it's just overkill.

... Plus if we do it like google adsense where you just copy and paste javascript code in, the recipricol link wont count as an incomming link. We need the HTML A tag to point at us - preferably without a NOFOLLOW too

IDEALLY the link would be text too - that way we will get targetted keywords pointing at the site too, but most people will use an image - in which case, the best we will get is the value of the image alt attribute or the value of the anchors title attribute.

All the JS would be is one line of code which would output a text link. If we ever needed to change that text link we can do it from Web Ring HQ.

That’s all I meant, I'm not bothering with customising the links and all that.

Surely the search engines can cope with that? Or are they really that 'old-fashioned'?

Suggestion:
Can the frontpage of featured links sort the items in a random order (maybe allow a sticky option too?)

Its jus that as my site was one of the first on the list, its now very close to the bottom.

There is a reason they dont allow javascript based links - it stops targetted spamming of robots. The majority suffer due to a minority of spamming idiots.

I think Jess is making buttons for people to use on their websites. But I've been eating up a lot of his spare time with the alpha testing of EE hehe.

I absolutely love the new features. It makes things a lot easier for us mods, especially the option to send a message to the submitted site's creator if we need to contact them for any reason (I've already encountered the need for that in the past). I like how the Adult Content warning looks too, I don't think it would drive away a site that has that sort of content, but then I don't have adult content on my site so I can't really base that on anything, hehe. I definitely think things are coming along nicely

Josh, if you do a good decent-sized write-up, and email it to BatVink, you could hopefully get an entire section in the Newsletter.

That would help all of us.

Also, if, when you send it, you start a new thread about the webring, you can include that link for discussions.

Will help our exposure, and hopefully get more people involved

Personally I was never expecting to see more than 20 sites in the ring. This is nothing against the ring itself - I just dont think there are that many web-enthusiasts in this forum who can be arsed with a community effort.

A write up could help - but dont expect hundreds of sites... And if you do get hundreds of sites, expect high spam rates
