Hi all,

DBS are on the look-out for a handful of talented DBPro programmers who have a high level of written English and would like to help write DBPro tutorials.

Download the tutorials available to get a good idea of the writing style required and then let me know if you're interested. We will pay you for each tutorial (pay you with either money or software, the choice is yours).

Interested? Then do the following:

1) Email me requesting a copy of the Writing Guidelines
2) Pick one of the Tutorial titles on the list I send you
3) Put together two or three pages of the tutorial
4) Send it to me for evaluation

If your writing style fits in with what we require (and your DBPro and general programming/games knowledge is sufficient enough to make the tutorial useful) then you can continue with the tutorial and we'll buy it from you at the end and hopefully you'll write another one for us.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have here other than "how much will you pay" because that is entirely dependant on the length of the tutorial, the quality of it and the subject matter covered. As a rule of thumb though it would be between $75 and $150 but this is negotiable.

Cheers,

Rich

Hmmm, I wanted to write a tutorial, but I don't know if my English is good enough. I mean, I'm Dutch. I don't exactly know what good English is. BTW can't you post the list here. Or is that a problem?

And I got DBPro today (YAY!). Now I can finally play around with it . Do I need to download patch 4, or is it included? And what about IDE updates? (maybe a bit offtopic )

Does your list feature anything to do with BSP management and usage Rich?

Congratulations on getting it kevil, and yes you will need to download patch 4 because it doesn't come with it, I also heavily suggest that you download both of the IDE updates.

Count me out ! I should have read the "Pro" bit after DB. Are there any tutorials on that list I could write without having to use DBpro commands, like programming basics or something? Never mind if there isn't .

Damn! Oh well, better luck next time.

Yup, could I do a general one that covers all of the basics, from print statements, to variables and arrays, to loops? I can't do 2D graphics as they are quite a bit different in Pro, but I don't know if you need anything like that Rich?

Thanks

Hey Rich, are you only interested tutorials for DBPro only? Or can we write for DBClassic as well because I've loads of functions and technique written in DBC that I'd like to give away and earn something in return.

Thanks,

@AsriCE

I'm sure that most of your functions could be adapted for DBP

I started work on one last night, I'll send you a sample soon Rich.

BTW.

About presentation, do we have to keep strictly to the style of existing tutorials. So far I have done this generally, but the code boxes have been done in the style of the DBP IDE.

Hamish - not interested in "what are arrays" at this stage, that stuff is covered in the DB book too well. Something like "Game Statistics - life counters, energy, item collection" would be useful though - i.e. show how to use arrays (etc) to store game data in and manipulate it as the game progresses.

DBPro Tutorials only please.

Rob - yes, you should be using the Tutorial Template we prepared for this (if you didn't get sent it, email me and I'll send it to you). Then the style will be exactly in-line with what we need.

Cheers,

Rich

Sounds good, I'll email you in a minute. Don't know if you need one on actual game design but I wrote a fairly interesting piece not that long ago, of course it would have to be changed into the particular template.

Thanks for the support Rob but since I don't have DBP(only DBC), I won't be able to tell if my code works there. So, I'm taking myself off the list.

I'd like to do that arrays one, but I just want to be completely sure that I'm not writing something that applies to DBC only.

Are arrays the same in DBPro? I know that the "dim array(x)" is the same, but do the types and things apply to arrays aswell as variables?

Also, could I just write examples of how to use and control the arrays in a game situation, or do I have to write a whole game (probably not but I'm asking anyway)?

I will give it a try and send you the results, and then you could decide for sure.

Thanks

[EDIT]

No worries about the coding bit, I can probably make a demo to go with it, I can use the Demo, I have 30 days to make the tutorial.

Hey rich i was wondering, can i like make a kinda mini-fighting game that includes limb collision, Fighting game enemy A.I. and the basic logic for health, lives, strength etc and go through step by step how i created all the sub-functions to make the final game? In other words like the binary moon new tutorials, the tutorial will have to come with the actual game which won't be that big, about 1MB when zipped, maybe less, so as i explain each part they see it 4 real!

everyday of life is a new chapter that has already been fortold but is up to the soul to capture.

The topics which need doing are the slightly more advanced ones, ie. 3D maths and memblocks. That is the area where the documentation isn't useful enough for teaching you practical in-game usage of the commands.

could anyone answer my question please...
firstly should we be coding this in DBS style or to our own style?
secondly are we creating real tutorials as in, with hand-in-hand htmls guides or as example programs and a brief decription of what is happening like the help currently has & a good number of lil remarks explaining the code in it?

would seem to defeat the point of the excercise if we create tutorials which rich then has to completely rewrite once he gets it for it to be useful.

just wanna know cause i've started on some tutorials, however they were for something else - and i've kinda figured i may as well just convert them for DBPs use too

its a little basic, intermediate to advanced tutorials ... all conforming to a single subject.

in all there would be 10 examples (including putting it all in a single scene) which will cover ->
Hair, Water (with Caustic&Reflection), SoftShadows, Fire, Volumetric Light, Bump Mapping, Vertex Tweening & Collision (not shader based but still a nice effect)

which should be enough for even the most hardened DBPro Developer, no?
Only Kentaree currently know what it'll be about, and only a faint idea. Before i embark on this though - would these effect be wanted to be explained? and even better would someone want to help me with the write up of what is going on as i'm nto good at anything but showing (need someone who can get to a point in less than 6hrs)

They should be in the exact same format as the ones you can download from this site. I have a Writing Guidelines to follow and a Template to format the Word document with. I ask everyone to send me a couple of pages from their Tutorial before they continue with it any further so I can give feedback and tell them if its worth carrying on or not. So far I've had to turn 1 down and have accepted 4.

Cheers,

Rich

I'm sorry! It's just that I thought that requesting the list might have been a sign of commitment - which is not definate. But, I am interested and I have a good idea for a tutorial. I'll email you soon.

I was also wondering, why do we have to email you? It might attract more attention if you post up the list. That's all.

Can a tutorial be based on third party commands
(with a dll included, of course)?
