So do I: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems

Oh look, it seems way more devices are using Linux than Windows. Huh.

Windows may be dominating the userbase, but that's all. If you take into account web servers, mobile devices, embedded devices, supercomputers, mainframes, etc. they're ALL unix based. The reason why is because Windows is a terrible system to have to maintain thanks to its inflexibility, thanks to its unusable method for maintaining software on a larger scale, thanks to its sloppy implementation for compiling software, and not to mention all of the security flaws it inhibits.

If you're a normal user and want to be spoon fed software solutions, which really isn't a bad thing because it takes a lot of work off your back, then go ahead and use Windows.

I however do not trust a major corporation such as Microsoft that deep into my system, especially not these days with all of the NSA shenanigans going on. I like the feeling of being in control of my computer, which is why I use Linux.

And ftr I did not know who that developersdevelopersdevelopers guy was until Windows 8 was announced lol

I like Gates as he actually contributes outside of the IT spectrum...

This morning, I woke up and something didn't feel quite right. I had no idea what it was so I sort of ignored it, and shrugged it off as being groggy, and then played Saints Row The Third for an hour or so.

I then logged onto Facebook and saw a bunch of my friends were posting about someone I knew (but hadn't seen in over a year) who took his life late last night.

He was a wonderful person who always had the greatest sense of humor. What's even more upsetting is that I had thought about contacting him last week, but didn't. Now I never can.

And here I was hoping that 2015 would be a better year than 2014...

Quote: "I... think you have no idea what a floating calculator is. That's just a shortcut to the calculator. A floating calculator is drawn over the top of other apps, so you can, for example, have Chrome open and type in calculations at the same time. Extremely useful."

Big deal. What difference does it make?

Quote: "
Actually it's not a "fancy customisation". It's just a simple practicality. The point of a screen filter is to make the screen even darker than the minimum brightness. Why is that not something an iPhone wouldn't need? It's not like iPhone screens go any darker than most Android screens."

Why would I need my screen to go any dimmer than the lowest?

Quote: "Oooook, if you're going to say jailbreaking is as good as rooting, you clearly have NO IDEA what you're talking about! Believe me. I did have half a spiel about why you were wrong about that, but I couldn't even be bothered finishing it. Suffice to say the inability to update the OS without losing jailbreak makes Android's root far superior."

Hit me, I'd love to hear what makes rooting better than jailbreaking. (I don't care about the inability to update - I wouldn't want to jailbreak anyway but the option is there).

Quote: "Not sure why you put emphasis on "every". Android default Messaging app has delivery and read notifications as well."

Certainly didn't have it a year ago when I used an android phone.

Quote: "personally I dislike the idea and find it to be rather unnecessary."

Of course you don't, it wouldn't fit your argument to like it.

Quote: "And Apple didn't steal any Android ideas?"

I pointed that out since android fans are so keen to point out when iOS implements an android feature.

Quote: "And what about 3rd-party keyboards?"

Are not as good as the default - the iPhone keyboard has always been superior.

Quote: "Widgets?"

Tacky.
Quote: "NFC (which is still far more limited than on Android)?"

Absolutely useless in every fathomable way.
Quote: "Battery stats? And iOS is still lacking things like wireless charging, multi-user support, selectable default apps, and the ability to install apps from places other than the official app store."

Why does anybody want this in a phone?

Quote: "Sure, iOS is probably more convenient in this respect, but imagine how frustrating it would be if you wanted to play both songs at once."

Why would you want to play two different songs from two different apps? It's not like you can even play two different songs from the same app...

Quote: "HOW are Linux and OSX superior?? Please elaborate on this bold claim!"

More of fact seeing as they're based on Unix, and Windows is based on a bowl of spaghetti - more elaborate and technical reasons have already been provided to you.

Also, UAC sucks.

The point was precisely that, it was random stuff, but if you noticed haha

RND() < Integer
Stuff$ < String
Output() < Print function

The dots were just to make it similar to the methods used in this thread

I didn't expect to see you here I've been trying to figure out the specifics of blizzard's pathfinding (more so in the world of Diablo but ). I've already written code to use A* and Mikko's funnel algorithm to navigate a polygonal navmesh long back. AppGameKit is tortoise slow though I saw it suggested somewhere that a breadth first algorithm could be used to find the equivalent of the A* paths for all enemies (my application involves 1 character, many AI) in 1 pass, but I'm not sure AppGameKit could handle even that Not sure about it yet. I may just have to try and see. Anyways, you mentioned tracing polygonal edges on that page for A*. I've been creating the funnels using polygon midpoints instead. I've seen both methods mentioned on various sources but never a comparison of the options. I opted for midpoints simply because it resulted in a reduction of points. A* is already slowing down with a 6 point path... Any thoughts?

If I found the correct Mikko's funnel, you should be using polygon corners for your funneling not the edge mid points. Do you mind sharing your A*/funneling code?

This is relevant now: Linux Sucks

Every OS has its flaws and its benefits. Use the right tool for the right job.

The fact is though that there are tens of thousands of people actively working on open source software, thousands on the linux kernel alone. Microsoft and Apple cannot match that kind of manpower, ever.

Hmmm. I'm trying to think up a good database design for a program I'm working on, and I'm kinda stuck. How do you do lists in a relational database? Like, I need to store a list of strings that are attached to a primary key(example would be a list of users that are in a chatroom).

I appear to have caught some sort of virus on Windows 7. I seem to have eradicated it, but am afraid of it showing up again.

It wasn't anything bad, just annoying malware doing nothing but hogging up resources.

I can't find my installation disks for Windows 7 though. It's making me sad because I just bought them a few months ago and already they've gotten lost. I fear they got lost when I moved out.

Too bad the launch of Windows 10 is still far off, otherwise I'd just wait and buy that.

Windows 10 is due this summer, well the games for it are

If you still have your Key, you can download [I think still available] official ISO files direct from Digital River, just web search for Digital River Windows ISO download, this is the official distributor for the MS store... there is a website showing the links for it... you need your own key! so don't bother looking if you don't have it...

If you were down the road from me I would let you borrow my disks and keys until you got yours... I have three Windows 7 Ultimate keys spare >.< One is a Signature Edition, One is an OEM key and another is a retail box

Yodaman Jer

Sadly I don't have the keys either, or even the box. Everything is gone, I really don't know where it possibly could have gone but it looks like I'm SOL for now.

On the bright side, after running multiple scans with Malwarebytes, Spybot and AVG, there is no trace of anything. "Virus" may have been the wrong word, it appears to have mostly been adware/malware just idling in the background, so pretty easy to remove!

How crazy would it be to rely on running the Windows 10 technical preview for a while as a main OS?

Nah, since I really only use this computer for gaming and not anything sensitive, like banking, I'm not too worried. Still, it would be nice to have my Win 7 disks if I need them in the future.

Either that or I buy Windows 8.1 even though that would be crazy.

I don't even know how I would have gotten malware on this system as every game I've downloaded has been through Steam or Amazon.

Windows 8 BETA was quite usable; I used it for some 3 months...

Give it a go, BUTTT

Use disk manager to free up some space after your partitions and run a test install! if all goes well and it registers fine [Important!] then you can reformat it as your main OS for the time being...

But do check when it expires and any legible release dates... I think they will announce the release date in April...

However if you think all is well, just hang on for the time being as not being able to use a tool you rely on for some three months, can be irritating

EDIT

There is speculation that Windows 10 ill be a free update for Windows 8.1 users... but nothing concrete at the moment...

That's what I'm thinking, I did end up on a rather suspicious looking site when attempting to find something that could open a .rar file, but I quickly exited out of it. Doesn't mean something didn't find its way through the brief connection, though.

I'm actually going to install a version of Kubuntu through VirtualBox in the event something goes awry and I'll need a temporary OS. Sure, it won't run any of my new games I got for Christmas through Steam, but it will give me something if I absolutely need it.

I suppose I should set money aside and be prepared to either buy Windows 8.1 or just have an install disk of the Windows 10 tech preview ready.

I will of course keep using PC for gaming though, no denying it's the best platform for gaming. But for general use I much prefer something like Mac or Linux. Hence why I'm installing Kubuntu in a virtual box to check it out

For simplicity I like Ubuntu One? I think there was a better one, and then there is XP Like Linux Mint...

I have not looked at the Linux variants in some 9 months or so...

How about we change the topic to the various variants of Linux?

Who likes which and for what reason?

I like Ubuntu as it is the simplest [In my experience] to setup for other users...

ChatRooms|ChatRoomID

I have always liked Kubuntu and Linux Mint, personally. I think Kubuntu might win though, I'm almost done installing it to the virtual machine I have set up and so far it looks and performs great!

I really love the Plasma desktop environment, it's cool without being over-the-top ridiculous!

EDIT: Wow, apparently the tech preview for Windows 10 is ridiculously stable. From what people are saying in that thread it sounds more stable than Windows 7

I'm really liking OpenSUSE at the moment. It's straight forward while having some of the best management software I've seen in a Linux distro. YaST is truly one of the best control panels I've seen. Though the distro does have a weird dichotomy between the Desktop Environment settings and the System Settings(YaST) though that's probably because KDE/Gnome like to handle their own settings rather than go through the trouble of integrating that tightly with YaST/OpenSUSE.

And Zypper is 5x better than apt-get or yum.

There's a new technique going around where the site opens a new tab and then follows a link to what would normally be in a pop-up. It's sneaky and works more often than I'd like to admit.

Yeah! I noticed that once a few weeks ago... which struck in my site visiting etiquette, which is now, if it is a website I would not normally trust... don't click it...

So for example site xydodgyz.com not trusting that... but site UnrealUnityEngineStuffTypeSite.com, yeah a little more trust allowed...
