WOW. There were NO posts when I left for town this morning!
Quote: "And at least a password prompt verifies that it's indeed you(the user) instead of a monkey that has access to your mouse."
lol
Quote: "If I remember correctly, you went straight to using an experimental filesystem and then ran into some stability issues with it. You couldn't even attempt to do what you did on Windows. And I don't suppose you reported any of those bugs to their respective projects?"
No, I wasn't referring to any of those more advanced things I used (like mhddfs). I don't even remember what the problems were, but whatever they were I fixed them and our NAS now works beautifully

Report any of the bugs? You're saying that like it's just
expected that the average user will report all bugs. That's one thing I don't like about Linux; it's just
expected that everyone using it is a dev and just magically
knows how everything works.
Quote: "How young are you?"
Hey now, let's not get too offensive, even jokingly, k?
Quote: "Oh look, it seems way more devices are using Linux than Windows. Huh.
Windows may be dominating the userbase, but that's all. If you take into account web servers, mobile devices, embedded devices, supercomputers, mainframes, etc. they're ALL unix based. The reason why is because Windows is a terrible system to have to maintain thanks to its inflexibility"
Now that's A) an exaggeration and B) totally unfair. According to the link you posted, Windows has a market share of 91.98% of ALL desktops, laptops and notebooks. That's a pretty darn big market share! The reason I say it's an exaggeration is because the link doesn't state how many devices there are in each category. Therefore you can't say that there's "way more" embedded/server/mainframe/etc. devices than consumer PCs. I say it's a totally unfair comparison because Windows isn't designed for use as a server or mainframe. Sure there's server
versions of Windows (and actually they work pretty well) but it's first and foremost a consumer OS. The only (and primary) reason Linux is used for those things is that it's open-source, meaning it can be customised as heavily as it needs to be. You wouldn't complain iOS can't be used as a server OS, why complain about Windows.
Quote: "and not to mention all of the security flaws it inhibits."
Inherits? Because inhibiting security flaws would be a good thing
Quote: "I then logged onto Facebook and saw a bunch of my friends were posting about someone I knew (but hadn't seen in over a year) who took his life late last night."
Wow... sorry man...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote: "Big deal. What difference does it make?"
Umm... seriously?
Quote: "Why would I need my screen to go any dimmer than the lowest?"
Because at night even the lowest settings can sometimes not be dim enough.
Quote: "Hit me, I'd love to hear what makes rooting better than jailbreaking."
Ok. Aside from the far easier methods involved in rooting and the issues with updating after jailbreaking, here's the main reason why rooting is better than jailbreaking: Jailbreaking pretty much only lets you install apps that aren't from the App Store as well as making tweaks tweaks. Rooting gives you complete and utter control over the entire device, right down to being able to remove and replace the OS itself.
Basically, jailbreaking lets iOS do what Android can do out of the box.
Quote: "(I don't care about the inability to update - I wouldn't want to jailbreak anyway but the option is there)."
You may not want to jailbreak, but for the people that do, the option to do so is made a crappy one by the limitations surrounding updating.
Quote: "Certainly didn't have it a year ago when I used an android phone."
I can't speak for your phone since I don't know what it was, but I can guarantee mine did. And everyone else's that I saw.
Quote: "Of course you don't, it wouldn't fit your argument to like it."
What? Seriously? I conceded your point. I said it might be an advantage, but not for me.
Quote: "I pointed that out since android fans are so keen to point out when iOS implements an android feature."
...yet you (the iOS fan) pointed it out first. Hmm...
Quote: "Are not as good as the default - the iPhone keyboard has always been superior."
Of course they're not as good. Apple doesn't let 3rd-party keyboards have any real extra functionality. They're basically skins.
Quote: "Tacky."
...in your opinion. You forgot that bit. They're an incredibly useful feature. What makes them tacky?
Quote: "Absolutely useless in every fathomable way."
WOW. You have never used it, yet you call it useless. I'm utterly astounded that you could even think such a thing.
Quote: "Why does anybody want this in a phone?"
What? The wireless charging? The multi-user support? The selectable default apps? The officially-supported unofficial app installs?
Quote: "More of fact seeing as they're based on Unix, and Windows is based on a bowl of spaghetti - more elaborate and technical reasons have already been provided to you."
All of them either applied only to professional server admins or were totally opinions and not technical facts. I'm still waiting for a reason that Windows is bad.
Quote: "Also, UAC sucks."
So do you log into Linux as root every time you use it? UAC is just fine, it's you that expects Windows to somehow automatically protect you when you're logged in as Administrator.

Quote: "Is it just me or does it seem like every 10 pages or so, we end up in a Mac vs PC or Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone debate?"
Probably my fault...

I just can't stand when people make claims that simply aren't true
Quote: "This is moving into the realm of "do I really want to spend all of this effort?" which means I'm out. I'll leave Clonkex and Indicium to duke it out."
EDIT: My apologies, Indicium, if your saw what was written here. It was unfair and unkind. I don't want to make an enemy of you
I want to be friends with every person on these forums. If you feel continuing the iOS-v-Android debate will cause problems, do not hesitate to just stop, and I will think no less of you. /edit
If I just tap F fast and long enough the bar will move all the way in my favour and I'll win

Maybe I've been playing too much Advanced Warfare
Quote: "Like I said folks, can't we all just agree that every operating system sucks? The surrendering to that truth would end all of the debate."
I understand why you said that now

I'd rather just agree that every OS rules though
Quote: "I didn't expect to see you here"
I've seen him in other places, too
Quote: "Uh oh guys, it looks like I have fallen victim to the dreaded Windows 7 Problem."
lol

I sincerely hope people don't fall for that kind of thing...
Quote: "Payday 2 is fun."
Totally!
Quote: "You always make out like you're incredibly busy but... you do spend a lot of time here posting absolute drivel ."
lol I hope that comment was in jest
Quote: "I have turned my signature upside down so that it would appear right side up for individuals in Australia such as Clonkex, easter bunny, and Thraxas."
loool thanks

I can finally read it properly!
Quote: "I can't find my installation disks for Windows 7 though."
If you've got the internet for it, you don't need them at all! *hooray* You can just download them from Microsoft's servers directly (I think they're called Azure?)! The thing that stops people just using those installers to steal Windows is the activation key.
Quote: "you can download [I think still available] official ISO files direct from Digital River"
OH yes, Digital River! And yeah, last time I looked (a month or so ago) you could easily get the Win7 installs
Quote: "Sadly I don't have the keys either"
*ahem*
[EDIT: Link removed since it's actually against the AUP - didn't think about that earlier, d'oh] Seriously though, I own Windows (so no moral or ethical issues), it's just that I can't be bothered putting in the key. So much easier to use the loader
Quote: "Although, people tell me I am more entertaining than annoying, usually."
Definitely entertaining

More often than not I find your humour so unexpected and random that it's massively hilarious

Been playing Advanced Warfare, and I'm actually enjoying it more than any other game recently. The graphics are truly incredible (in most places - it's also incredibly linear so you stray even slightly off-track and the graphics look like place-holders), especially the cut-scenes... *gurgles*

The cutscenes are just mind-blowingly good! Except... except for the fact that they WON'T STAY IN SYNC. They jitter and stutter and then the audio gets out of sync and ruins the whole experience.

Most people say to force 16:9 ratio and/or change to borderless window, but the ratio thing only fixes it for the next cutscene you watch and borderless window made it worse for me. The only real fix is to restart the game at the start of every mission (which is not hugely horrific since the game starts so quickly and lets you skip the intros, but it's still a nuisance).
My brother and I are huge fans of the Yogscast, and we thought we'd better see what all the fuss is about so we've been watching the Shadow of Israphel series. Despite being really early work, it's actually quite enjoyable - more so than a lot of their latest videos. It also gave us an interesting and exciting idea: We're going to give our sisters (two of them, anyway) a SoI-style adventure! The first test involved seeing how many clients we could have open at any one time with 8GB of ram - turns out 3-5 works great. This means we can each control 3-5 characters without logging in or out.
And then we decided to see how easy it was to use Bukkit servers... WOW! They're incredible! So many awesome plugins, so easy to use... now we have plugins that hide all console messages (silent TPing anyone?) and all login/logout messages (so we can have an infinite number of characters!), let us change our creative fly speeds (FINALLY a decent way to traverse the Minecraftian landscape and find suitable locations for various parts of our story) and heaps more! We can even open other players' inventories like a chest and take and give items, even so far as to equip them into specific armour slots!
It's super exciting! We're going to create an awesome story that hopefully our non-RPG-playing sisters will actually understand
