Agent Dink has spoken, and the next competition will be a Sci-fi spaceship competition. Create
Quote: "the coolest most original capital ship (for example a ship like a Star Destroyer or the USS Enterprise) So long as it's big and it's a cool new
design. I don't want to see exact replicas. "

This should be a fun one, and I really believe users of all levels of experience can have a chance at winning!

Post your entries in the entry thread by the end of Sunday July 6th and then voting will commence.

Good luck!

Here are a couple of more pictures, I added two engines to it to make it look more like a spaceship, and less like a duck

Quote: "the coolest most original capital ship "

..the most enjoyable thing about space combat is seeing your enemy run when your cap ship finally turns up..

please note :capital ship means >big

Ooh yeah BTW the USS enterprise isn't classed as a capital ship I don't think. although depends on how you look at it, this is wiki's take on it.

Quote: "In Fiction
The term has also been adopted into science fiction literature and culture to describe large spaceships used in military contexts, particularly where other naval terms have also been adopted in similar fashion. Often, in such contexts, there is a significant size gap between non-capital and capital warships, with the latter typically being over a kilometer in length and incapable of safely entering planetary atmospheres (much less actually landing), like the Star Destroyers (and, especially the Super Star Destroyers) of the Star Wars franchise. Another common occurrence is that the definition of a capital ship depends on who one asks - even within the same fictional universe, one man's capital ship is another man's corvette. Again, in Star Wars, even though Star Destroyers are capital ships to their own Tie fighters , they themselves are the Death Star's frigates.

Heres my WIP.

I know, the big part at the back looks out of place
that's because i didn't read that it had to be big, so i started adding stuff to it. (it was originally a fighter ship). Would it be ok to have a smallish ship? like a fighter ship?

Your signature has been erased by a mod - 340 KB is a little big don't you think?

I have not been able to secure any prizes for this competition. That's why there was a little bit of extra time from the last competition to this one(as well as me finishing up my first year of university). I will continue to try however, if not for this one, for future competitions.

Regardless, there are some great entries coming in!

I dont know if Ill enter this one, but I worked up a concept incase I do;

I call it the hammer head, based off of a hammer head shark. The "head" is the front of the ship, where the smaller ships would take off from. Still a lot of work to be done though.

@DC, great as always, you going to be using that in Exodus?

BigAdd Im pretty sure that could pass for an entry with a few alterations.

Here's my roughed out mesh so far:

Im getting too caught up in adding mindless extrusions, gonna have to go back to the design and focus on functionality.

ok - heres my (probably) finished one.
I've taken the big, out of place looking thing off the back and made the whole ship bigger. I've added some new weapons to it and changed the windscreen slightly so that it has multiple levels. I've also added the crew to it so that you can see the new scale of it.

Edit: there are also broadside cannons but i thought the line of pics would be to big with another pic on it. hmm.. maybe it's too big as it it...

Just spent the last several hours learning how to achieve a decent normal map in DBPro, more or less satisfied with my progress ^^.

(This are in-game shots)

The engines in the back are still annoying me a bit because I'm failing to figure out how to get my shader to ignore those in terms of lighting and such. Until today I had never used a .fx file in my life though, so *shrug*, pretty excited xD.

Model is 2000 tris, 1024x1024 diffuse + normal texture.

I'm off to bed, I've managed to stay up far too late again >< (Nearly 4am)

Yeah a bit. I usually look to the human forces from Halo and older alien movies like Alien for inspiration, I like the brownish-rusted look. But yeah, it might be because Ive been designing and modeling a halo map with a lot of windows and human structures as well, kind of in that mode.

Ok FAR from done and tthis is a high poly beast (currently 92000) and there is still more to do
i need to
texture it
-put in the hangers
-put in the reclaimer bay (ships that salvage ships)
-the ecape pods
-engines
-Ion cannons (they go in those large squares that are open im looking at having 4 cannons per square so 80 cannons)
doors to the cannons
-doors for the cannons
-transmittion array
-Docking bay

This thing has 76 rocket pods fully loaded with 304 rockets
16 heavy turrets
it will also have
80 mobile ion defence cannons
6-8 reclaimer ships
600 fighters (give or take)
also im planning on making ~80 escape pods

... anyone know how to make things show up as blocks while i work the missles are killing my polycount... though i ould always hide them

also the pods all can sink into the ship to reload and pop out again to release their unholy fury

:edIT I REALLY need to figure out the image attatching procces so the veiw button comes up...

Hullo, I thought I'll drop in my little design sketch .

THE EXODUS III

Three brown dwarf stars provide stellar plasma for prupulsion, wich is expelled by the gravity wells, created by the row of stars.
The stars are held in energy fields, also used for heat transportation to powerplants on the "planetary planes" that have planetary domes on them. The domes themselves have different environments and house various races fleeing the chaos that is starting with the collision of the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies.

You said a big ship, so I kinda went the biggest you can think of... .

Never heard of Warning Forever. *googles*

Oh its a game. Well I dont know Im looking at screenshots and I dont see a hammer head ship, even if there was one the game looks like an old retro 2d game so a 3d model wouldn't bare any resemblance to it. I'd never heard of it before so Im still going to model it.

@Deathead
I wanted to ask you how so, but then I found a screenshot and yeah, that one front view does look similar(if you abandon all symmetry)... You should look however on that side view in the left bottom corner. This is meant to be a long cylinder, or a cigar shape even(haven't decided yet), connected from the inside by three or even more rings.

I do see however how people might see the coincidence, so I guess I might try a different idea...

Ok, I've come to the conclusion (like I didn't already know) that I stink at modeling.

Anyway, here's my attempt so far.

I just have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to textures. I can move vertices around, and use deformation tools. Stretch and tweak this and that, but I just haven't figured out the secret to texturing yet.

I guess we have the same problem, huh? And is there a secret? All I know is that it takes a while, and usually I have no idea what I am doing....

(If there was a secret I would be soooo mad!)

Added more details:

(left = underside, right = top)

I didn't add much to the top because I want to keep it fairly sleek, I prefer my details on the undersides, and there's far more to come, it just takes ages adding them and I have many things to do :p.

Thanks, and yes, it's called the Singularity, created by the Agrippen, though no player will actually be able to pilot it due to its... 'special ability' .
