Heeellloooo everybody!

This is Yodaman Jer comin' at you with a great proposition! It is time, once again, for NaGaCreMo, and this year I wager it will be better than ever now that AppGameKit is much more advanced.

For those who are uncertain as to what exactly NaGaCreMo is, I offer you this snippet!

What I said last year wrote: "NaGaCreMo isn't a competition, rather it is a pledge you're making to yourself to get something done within the first month of the year. It can be a full-fledged game, a demo of a game, a program, or even a website!"

As said above, NaGaCreMo is all about making a commitment, and sticking through with it. The goal is to have something working by the end of the first month of the year (January, in case you aren't on the standardized calendar). It can be a new project, or it can be a continuation of a project you're already working on. The choice is up to you! Just note that you also do not need to wait until the first of January to start your project if you decide to do something new, if you have an idea go ahead and start now!

Also, you can use any game engine out there, not just TGCs. There's one stipulation, and that's if you want to create a game using, say, Unreal, and also want to post a WIP thread, you have to post it in this board! If the game you are creating is made with a TGC product, it can go in the normal WIP/AGK Showcase boards.

Also, if you would like to provide a link to your WIP thread I will make sure it makes it into this post!

Here's how to sign up!

I, [name], pledge to create a game/application/working demo/website/quantum computer by 31st January, 2016

We would also like an image designed that can be used as a signature! Please keep images to 600x120 pixels, or else fear the wrath of the mods!

Here is one I created:

And here is one GunnerJnr created! Feel free to use either or even make your own!

I shall be the first to pledge!

I, Yodaman Jer, Ultimate Ruler of the Forums and your President, do hereby declare to create a working game demo by the end date of our choosing, 2016

Hmm, maybe I won't actually work on a game this year. Maybe I'll just knock out some media instead FOR the game I want to make. That, I think, is a slightly easier goal at the moment than trying to create an engine from scratch

So what are you waiting for? Pledge away!

Pledges thus far:
#1 - Yodaman Jer - 3D Project in AGK - "Unlock the Door" - WIP Here!
#2 - Rich Dersheimer - Game Demo
#3 - Crazy Programmer - Quantum Computer
#4 - Mobiius - VR Zelda Demo - 3D Pool Demo - WIP Here!
#5 - spectrepaul - Something or other
#6 - MrValentine - 3D Assets
#7 - SoftMotion3D -3D Block Model Editor - Voxel Doom - WIP Here!
#8 - Dar13 - A Game!
#9 - Your Royal Pain in the a - er, Royal Highness - Seppuku Arts - Something Done Maybe
#10 - 29 games - A Game! He also gets the Cookie because he was our tenth pledge. Stick that in your oven and bake it!
#11 - GunnerJnr - A thing!
#12 - CJB - A game!
#13 - unlikely - 3D Space Shooter Demo - WIP Here!
#14 - janbo - Slice Wise
#15 - JLMoondog - Out of fuel Classica
#16 - mrrad - Missile Command Clone - WIP Here!
A pledge was made in January! Will there be enough time to complete it?! Why, of course, for it was made by none other than...

#17 - TheComet - Frequency Domain Graphics

A second pledge made in January by none other than
#18 - blink0k - Bugz! - WIP Here!

16 17 18 total projects!

End of Jan gets my vote...

I plan to participate by creating some free 3D game assets for all to use in their projects. Probably crap in quality but useful hopefully...

Will undertake my 3D modelling studies through January

A whole year makes it NaGaCreYe, ehh nope...

I shall allow someone else to create the banners and consider if I can make any too

Wow, so far we have more pledges than we did last year at this time! Excellent!

MrV, I am aware that the event would have to be re-named. Perhaps we could go for something that isn't quite a year, but more than the one-month time window. Either way, I'm excited to see what people do this year!

IF anyone has any ideas for banners please feel free to share them! Otherwise I will create some mock-ups tomorrow.

I could swear that I had put my pledge in.

Oh well.

I, your royal highness, Seppuku, do pledge to have...something kinda done.

I don't have a good track record for these. But last year I pledged to do my Role Playing group's site. I did get something done and it is now done. All using Ruby On Rails for the backend stuff. It's fully functional and stuff.

If we're allowed to be vague about the actual project:

I, 29 Games, pledge to create a game by the end date of our choosing, 2016.

I like the idea of an extended deadline. The last time I did this I took two months. I think a full year kind of losses the spirit of NGaCreMo but if it means people will continue with their projects, and not just abandon them when the month's up, then I think that's more important.

I am currently making a game and started a WIP on the AppGameKit showcase board today but I think I'll do a separate project for this. I'll have a think about it over the weekend.

I also like the banner.

Ooooh 29 games you're our tenth pledge! You win... a cookie!

Wait, do we HAVE an emoti of a cookie? I guess not, so here is a .gif of one instead.

Ok, so I think a year for NaGaCreMo is a bit extreme. What if we changed it to just the first two months of the year, and call it NaGaCreMo(s)?

Can I pledge to order parts for my motorized bicycle? Seriously though, considering I no longer interest in programming and that's my current project that needs motivating (lest be yet another project of mine that dies)... Besides, games are fun, motorized bicycles are fun... Motorized bicycle == game!

So we should rename you Dark Engine Dude?

It will be an app I'm working on, because I've not done any games programming for a long while. I do plan on doing it again eventually.

However, I think I have decided on my app, though not the name. It is going to be a Recipe App, for collecting and storing recipes. The reason for this is that I intend to expand my cooking. And unlike a normal person, I'm not going to book mark recipes I like, or use a pre existing recipe app, no, I am going to be a nerd and program something. I already have the bare bones, just to lay out my intentions and started structuring out the XML files the recipes will be stored in. The purpose of this app is to help me get into good C# coding habits, many of my habits have inherited from my DBPro coding, whilst good habits for DBP, not necessarily good habits for C# as they are two different types of languages and C# has features DBP doesn't have. And I have already got start on some of those features I've previously not properly taken advantage of like inheritance, which is working out useful for my XML parser I am setting up, so I can have the XMLParser class and then have classes that inherit from it to use their own logic, say for example, if I am loading a Recipe file or an Ingredients List file. Which could later, when adding new features, like a daily planner, have an XML loader for that.

I do have GitHub thingy set up too: https://github.com/BrynP/RecipeApp

This is an interesting idea. NaGaCreMo was founded because of a lack of motivation for game development, or projects relating to game development. As independent developers, we don't have big bosses yelling at us to get things done as a motivator, so we have to do it ourselves.

But I never stopped to think that people might have other projects not related to game development that would need just as much motivation. Although, we couldn't call it NaGaCreMo anymore after that... but this doesn't mean you can't pledge to finish your bike if you really want to

So, in order to solve the month vs months/year debate, and renaming NaGaCreMo - why don't we just call it NaGaCreMo - Extended this year, since we can't decide on an actual end date right now?

Although I do think it should be within the first two months of the new year. Which is tricky since February usually only has 28 days!

I think you are all losing the focal point of NGCM... it is a project to complete in a month... WIPs can continue once the month is up as had occurred last time, it is just a driver to see if you can manage something, there is no success or failure, just self commitment... and for fun! so we should stick to 1 month as the name implies...

Now going back to the topic of addressing the challenge focus...

I thought this up...

InProCoMo

INternational
PROject
COmpletion
MOnth

Or IPCM for short.. sounds like an old add-in card

This can alleviate the focus of it being a Website/App/3D Models etc... but this being a game forum, most projects should be oriented that way to be relavent but at the same time not excluding anybody unless the project involved... questionable ideas

discuss...

@Seppuku Arts - I have something similar to work on next year, but not anytime soon... cooking is one of my new year resolutions for 2016 too

MrValentine is right, I suppose we should probably just stick to the one-month "official" run. WIPs can absolutely continue after that point.

This year we also attempted a NaGaCreMo - Summer Edition, but my mother became extremely ill a couple of days after I made that thread and it quickly died because I didn't have the time to manage it. But this next summer I'm sure I could run it!

Although since when did I become the Official NaGaCreMo Runner Guy Thingy?

So its decided on the normal 1 month?
That's fine with me
When are we going to start the race?
I vote for Monday giving us a head start while everyone is on break and has some free time.

Unless we want to wait till the first which is fine...I'm just excited is all.

You can pre-plan, but start doing stuff on the first... this happened in the past..

Or we could go like that other comp thing... forgot the name... they change the rules and set them like an hour before start time... lodum dare?

I don't think we want a ludum dare clone, that can get... crazy, pretty fast.

@Crazy Programmer:

You can start your project whenever you want! I guess I didn't make that clear in the first post. Basically, the whole point of this even is to make yourself motivated to create - and attempt to finish - some part of your game/demo/whatever, and be able to show your progress along the way

So, if you have an idea in mind, go ahead and start it! I have an idea that could be pretty fun, and a good first step into AppGameKit 3D... basically, there was a wonderful game made in DBC waaaay back in the day that was a kind of racing game, and featured fast-paced movement/obstacle avoiding. So, I might go for something like that

ok now that i know what im working on...

I, Sheldon MacDonald aka (SoftMotion), pledge to create a new 3d block model editor by the end of January 2016. Calling it "Voxel Draw" for now...

What i did this year with my 3d map blocks i will make better and have them curved+smooth. Should be fun! but very code intensive since the scenes will be drawn with complete code only!
im cheating however.... as im starting the project now..

Glad to read we can start whenever we want, because I literally just started a prototype of an idea stewing in my brain a few days ago, you can see it in the 2nd half of THIS POST, right underneath my 'Smack It Re-make', that I just recently released to the Google Play store, (my first ever mobile app and my first ever AppGameKit project, well aside from the test one above in that thread, that I was testing for getting the same result in both tiers 1 & 2, it went well)

So now I will sign my soul away...

I, GunnerJnr[AGK N00B], pledge to create some attempt of a game/application/working demo/website (can cross this one off the list as well)/quantum computer - [WIP] by the [end date we choose], 2016

Cheers, as for the sig, I will need to make one, for now here is a temporary one

EDIT!
It's probably also worth mentioning this nifty site I just recently signed up to as well if you like motivation

We are suppose to wait till the first of January if we are aiming to start a new project. Otherwise your pledge will be to finish an ongoing project. The good thing about NaGaCreMo over the years, it has evolved to assist people with positive motivation in any way possible.

I personally am waiting till the 1st of the month mainly because i will be starting something fresh.
I also just checked out the website you provided and it is looking very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Ahh right I see, well I think then I will start a new project on the 1st of January and try to juggle it with my current project I just started, perhaps just a simple app of some sort opposed to a game.

Also yes 1GAM (one game a month) looks pretty cool, its the same kind of concept as NaGaCreMo really, if you really wanted to push yourself they have a 12 in 12 challenge, 1 game for every month!!

I've reconsidered what my app is going to be. Although I will be doing this recipe thing /anyway/, however, I figured in the spirit of keeping it related to video games that I would code a mood based music player for Role Playing. What is the purpose of this? I hear you say. Oh...you didn't say anything? My bad, I must be hearing things again. Anyway, to answer my subconscious' question, some people who role play or even play MMO games is to have a playlist they listen to. But I thought, what if I could have a music player that adapts to the moods and themes of a particular role play you're doing?

I browse through music to put on when roleplaying to help build the atmosphere for getting into character. In fact, one of my most emotive roleplays was done to this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tog9GjczJVE. I know roleplayers who do the same. So why not make this easier? Instead of build up a YouTube playlist or one on Spotify or on their favourite media player, why not have something unobstrusive that works as an overlay to whatever game you're playing? Build your playlist for a serious of different moods and themes. Got a combat based roleplay? Why not have some battle music? Is your character having a tender moment with the missus? All the Barry White you could ask for. Oh look, it's a Dragon! Power metal all the way baby. The idea will be able to have a list of preset "moods and themes" and to build your music around these and also the ability to add custom themes and moods. Presently the plan is to utilize YouTube and music people have stored on their PC. Maybe in the future, attempt to use the Spotify API.

How will I achieve it. The idea will be to use C# with WPF, as I can customise the UI better versus Windows forms.

Perhaps an endgame goal would be to integrate it into FFXIV via FFXIV App (a parser for FFXIV) as there is a big roleplay community there, which would not be that difficult to do as they have an open source platform for their plugins and it was developed in C# using WPF. The downside is, if you use this app to cheat, then you can get banned. But using its parser to play music isn't doing any harm. However, for NaGaCreMo, the basic music player and overlay.

Anyway, this is just a simple layout for the kind of thing that I am going for. Click Me

I have added all the new pledges to the first post! DJD 64 I haven't put you in yet because I'm not sure if I should create a new category or not

I also have created a website for myself under my new name which will contain a blog detailing the progress I'm making with my project, which is a custom scene editor I will use for my game. I will post the links later!

Haha probably a good idea not to. I have already deemed a few days ago that my wallet doesn't hold the necessary needs to get that project going anyway.

ah ok then....

what i will do is just test some drawing code and maximize efficiency at it.... then start a new project with it january 1st. I'll work on a game and finish it in a month!

Uh, no, this has NEVER been the case. It doesn't matter when you start the project, so long as you either finish it, or get it to a workable state.

Yeah I don't know where that idea even came from. NaGaCreMo doesn't have a specific start date, only a specific end date. It's been that way since its beginning in 2009

So, I updated the first post to prevent further confusion

Nice one thanks. It was Crazy Programmer who replied to my initial post and said :

To be fair he did say only if we are wanting to start a new project.

Sabotage !!! Hehe it was probably an honest mistake. Actually quite looking forward to this.

PS - I vaguely remember seeing something about the 11th pledge getting double cookies. I signed my soul away on a false promise, I feel cheated hehe just kidding

All i said was it would dictate the pledge Never said you couldnt have old projects for NaGaCreMo, the goal is to promote positive feedback and motivation. In my eyes anything goes

Iv always looked at NaGaCreMo as a 1 month long friendly competition at the start of each year to release a game within the month. Sorta a New Years resolution.

Im also not the only one who thinks new projects should start on the 1st.

but anyways it does not matter

Hehe yea I was only messing anyway! I guess in the respect of starting a brand new project on the 1st makes it bit more of a challenge and for you to really push yourself. In a sense by starting early you might feel you have cheated yourself a bit. Personally though I have a few hospital appointments in January and if all goes well possibly my operation to have my gall bladder removed. So I dont mind continuing what I started a few days ago as I am going to lose a few days in January as it is.

No me either, hence why when I thought we could only start on the 1st, I said I would start a new project. I am happy to continue on with my current one now though.

NaGaCreMo '16 - BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!

I think I am in love with AGK2, it is the best investment I ever made a few weeks ago, I havent closed it since lol. I'm still a n00b with it, but I can't fault the documentation or the sample projects. Very helpful indeed. I hope to migrate over to Tier 2 full time in the new year, and hopefully get set up in android studio as well, I read somewhere that Eclipse with ADT is being deprecated ? So TGC will be updating to Android Studio. Unless I dreampt it.

Cheers

Yep. Hence I've already got a head start on mine. Managed to work out the bits of code I need to get it working and have maybe 75% of the XML parser written and most of the code needed to interpret that data. I am quite happy with what I've got so far, the code is a mess from just experimentation, but I will clear that up when I get back to it. All just from playing around with stuff this evening, it's functional, if I get time tomorrow, the aim will be to get it running off of an XML file instead of hard coded data. Then the next step will be to allow the user to choose an XML file to load and have the ability to create their own. Beyond that? Well, depends what I have time for over the next month.
