Not much has changed since my last code however I have made it that no matter what the frame rate it should work at about the same speed. Also as for the problem of dying randomly, my only guess is that you were running out of fuel, make sure you check your fuel gauge at the bottom. If that isn't the problem I really have no idea.
@Gadgetfreak- neat idea, I like the ghosted objects and the preview, it looks very good for being media-less.
@Nick- I'm might just be doing something stupid, but when I play your game the ball doesn't bounce off the paddle, it just sits on the paddle for a few seconds and then the ball goes through it.

Well thats just plain wierd - it is fine on my PC (runs at a silly high FPS) and is fine on my work PC (runs at a silly low FPS - about 20).

Whats your setup? (CPU/GFX/Compiler, etc)

EDIT - tweaking the score display - i broke it in the last one:
EDIT 2 - improved colision calculations - for some reason before, I was calculating it every frame and then only applying if there was a hit! That must have been some severe bedtime programming...

I have a Pentium 4, a Radeon 9800, I'm using version 6.3, 256 ram. It runs at 926 fps ..... wow thats alot.

EDIT: I fixed it there were some ... in the rems, concatenation symbol for my editor, sorry bout putting you on a wild goose chase. And by the way it is very cool, simple yet addicting.

ahh that damn concat thing! I must stop doing that... () Nice find.

I'd hope a pentium 4 and 9800 could render 4 boxes, 1 small sphere and some text at 800x600x16 at about that speed!

EDIT: I've blogged it...

And project...ed.. it:

Judgement Day!

Great contest - and some really good entries I thought. Very difficult to pick a winner, as there was so much variation in style, yet it was still very close in terms of which one was my favourite.

Acelepage: Star Castle

I really liked the feel to this - it just took me back somehow. Sound effects were great, and although it was quite hard, I enjoyed playing it.

Hobgoblin Lord: Tempest

I think you'll agree, some way to go before it is a complete game, but I could see the potential

Brain111: Snipe invaders

Good twist on an original theme - hard enough to make you want to try again. Great graphics considering no media, including explosions, fog effect, animations - and it was quite scary when they shot at you in 3d!

Spopovich: Digdug and River Raid

Two games which both had a really good retro feel to them. I strangely liked the blockiness of the graphics which made me remeber programming on the zx81 and spectrum! River raid was the better of the two I thought - nice work.

Nick:

Good twist on pong - simple, yet fun. Working physics - just needs AI to make it a completely addictive game!

Gadgetfreak: 3d tetris

Again, nice twist on the original. Quite complicated though, to see exactly where the gaps were, so I didn't score very highly (actually, at all!). SOme way to go to refine it, but a great start.

Very close thing, but the runner up was:

And the winner was:

Onto the next challenge!

Excellent challenge! Some really good work on this one.

I wondered if anyone was interested in the sound routine I use to put sound into my code. It adds an extra dimension to a game, and is a bit of a challenge when no media can be used.
I grabbed the code from somewhere else in the forums, which uses memblocks to create a sound object.
I just run a loop which adjusts certain variables to create sounds. I have no idea what variable values will create what sound, I just experiment with values until I get a sound I can use.

Here is the code in a function. All you have to do is call the function with the sound number you want to create, then play the sound.
To get different sounds, adjust the variable values. I have commented the variables. Feel free to add this into your code for future challenges.

Looks simpler than the sound code I played around with a while back. The sounds seem quite different too. Take a look here if you're interested:

@Ric,
That looks like a lot more structured code than mine. I don't have my DBP system available just now, so I'll have to try out the code later. Perhaps I can improve my routines to generate more predictable sounds.
I remember the C64 sounds. I think it was a 3 channel chip, so it could do a lot of complex sounds.

I'm itching to get coding for another challenge. How about it Brain? What's your fancy?

I was gonna suggest a dynamic but efficient texture/animation you could have in the background to a game (like the previous challenge).

Something that WinAmp would be proud of when listening to the Aphex Twins or something equally nuts.

Unfortunately, I don't know what you mean, hahaha. Sounds cool though.

I had a semi-okay idea for a contest: Make the best game using only text. Like, probalby not a text adventure, but something that uses only standard characters as the graphics... maybe.

Nicholas Thompson, could you please explain what your suggestion means? Do you mean something like this:

Ok... I have decided that the challenge will be the text thing. Looking back, I wasn't very clear about what I meant, so I'll write what i mean:
The contest is to create any type of game that only renders text to the screen. You can use any types of commands (even 3D commands if you want to) just as long as the only thing that is rendered to the screen is standard text.

I used to make games kinda like this back when I used QBasic on a really really old computer. This is kind of a strange idea, and it might turn out really stupid, but it will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.

Brain, can you clarify the ASCII range allowed? For example, the entire ASCII character set, or just the alpha/numeric characters and symbols?
I remember writing games on the TRS-80 using characters like diamonds and blocks (I think I might be dating myself here).

This challenge sounds fun, and I need a break from my project, so I'll join in

I'm going to make a character grid system that will be able to display shapes and graphics of different colors, all from text. From this display system I'll make a simple game, which will be my entry for the competition.

I've pretty much got the grid system done, so now I've just got to create a game. Here's my code so far:

Sounds good. We did have an ascii challenge once before, but if I remember correctly, we had to make the game 'Frogger' from ascii characters. This should be fun if we can do anything!

Usual two week deadline, then? That would take us to Wednesday 7th of March.

And I'm assuming, as you mentioned that any commands, including 3d commands are allowed, it would be acceptable to grab an image of some standard text and turn it into a sprite/3d plane?

Yeah, sounds good. Normal two week deadline, so 7th of March like Ric said.

@acelepage: Any text character, like letters, numbers, and symbols is fine. I think it might kind of mess up the point of having a text challenge if you could use the diamonds and blocks and stuff, sorry.

@Ric: It's okay to turn them into sprites or planes as long as you make sure that you are only rendering text to the screen.

OK, so i made an entrance to my own competition for no reason, more of a joke than anything. It is called Attack of the W's.

Basically, you star as everyone's favorite letter, A. Guided by your friend B, you have to rid the world of the endless amount of evil W's. There's a cutscene and everything.

Yeah, that is fine. You can even use the sprites to position/rotate the text like Ric did, take a look at his code. Just as long as you only use text.

Here is an example of what you are NOT supposed to do with other commands:

I hope that clears it up a little.

Heres my entry! I thought that last and first time I entered, i got third place so who knows...

Word Drop
I remeber playing this game on our old 286 computer it was a little different from my version but it involves the same basic principle. You have to spell out the word that is falling from the top of the screen before it reaches the bottom of the 'pit' if you do you get 4 points if you don't as yet nothing happens!

Oh, when you type the word do not press enter. If you do the ENTRY$() command will store it as a [] symbol and it makes your entry not equal to the word falling! I will fix this in later versions!
Here's the code!

Have fun!

Anyone know if there's a way to set the encoding to ANSI in DBP? Even loading my data from a text file it keeps printing the wrong characters because it doesn't support the ones I want to use.

so is it even against the rules to render the cursor? damn..

i guess it would be okay to have a letter in the place of the cursor right?

Here's my one:

You can make custom levels by changing the data statements:
"" = not solid
"^" = you die!
"[" or "T" or "]" means you win. To use, put three next to each other: "[","T","]" This will create a button shape which is automaticaly animated when the player jumps on it

Hope you like it

@Diggsey
That is very cool. The animation is smooth. Looks like the beginnings of a jumpman.

Just a note, when I first ran it, my default screen size made the character fall off the bottom of the screen. I had to insert a
set display mode 1024,768,32
at the beginning to make the code work.

( 2b || !2b ), that is the question. The answer: true

@diggsey: that's a pretty cool idea, making a platformer type of thing out of letters. I really like the stick figure guy. Maybe you could somehow add a way for it to make random levels or something?

@darthvader: I like the game, although i didnt get a chance to play it for too long. Does it speed up or get more letters on the words as it goes on? Hahaha, my first reaction was to hit enter for some reason. And then, like the second word it spelled was "poo", it made me laugh.

I updated:
-sprites
-game time calculation
-enemy ai (fires secondary weapon after one minute)
-pause feature
-alternate controls

I added:
-secondary weapon
