the way my cars turn is choppy, theres only one kind of car, and theres an occasional glitch at the stoplights. unfortunately, we are about to leave for a family vacation, and i'm not sure if we'll have internet. if we do i'll update my code before midnight tonight

the reason it gets messy if you put in too many more cars is that once the car gets within a certain distance from the stoplight (25 units IIRC), it gets a place in line at the stoplight, and goes to that place. if there are too many cars, they come within 40 units, then realize their place in line is maybe 45 or 50 units away from the stoplight because there are so many cars there already, and back up to that place. so if you put in too many cars, you have to change that number (its on lines 905, 928, 951, and 974)

Quote: "the thing I thought was a bit funny in qwe's entry though, is that I swore I saw two cars got caught in the middle of a junction when the lights turned red, and they both reversed back to where they came from to clear the junction!"
hehe.. my cars are smart! any unfixed glitches happen, i think, because the cars are placed randomly along the road, so sometimes two cars happen to be placed inside of eachother or in the middle of an intersection at start, and then weird things happen

if i win and i'm not here (i'll be back thursday or friday), or if someone else wins and wants a suggestion for the next challenge,

let's brainstorm science ideas. physical simulations or Spelunx-like rooms that would be useful in the classroom and fun to play around with (learning in disguise)?

Quote: "it'd seem to me that people would still be able to post entries unti midnight today, and i'll judge tomorrow?
is this correct!?"

Yep - that's how it usually goes. If you leave it until tomorrow, people in different time zones may get something last minute done before they go to bed.

okay sounds good

errr in your entry gadgetfreak, i couldn't work out how to place traffic lights?! i click the option but when i try to place them, nothing!

perhaps you would be able to clarify how to place them
or fix the bug before midnight?

because it is just one minor flaw in an excellent entry!

good luck everyone!

They need to be on an 4-way intersection of road, traffic lights generally don't work otherwise.

First of all, all of the entries look great, so good luck to everyone. I fixed a few bugs and figured I should post my finished product. This has been a great challenge.

Yea left turns were gonna be a lot harder to implement because they would have to pass oncoming traffic, which wouldn't have ended well. Oh and when I posted it last night, I had left a bug in it so that it wouldn't load. I was in bed thinking about it and I was like oh shoot. I had to get up and fixed it.

okay! sorry about the delay! having a few computer problems!
just need to get db pro installed so that i can play the entries through again to make my decision!

EDIT

okayyy people!

i have decided my winner shalst be

my runner up is

everyone else well done!
there is the making of some great projects there, but i think the main thing that held them back was the dependency on a simple grid system.

qwe: good entry apart from the thing about reversing back when the light changes mid-junction which I'm sure is not safe, isn't that what the amber light is for? the amber light should come on to allow any cars that are already in the junction to get across before it goes red.

Spopovich: good entry, but a few bugs with cars becoming stuck in things and crashing at junctions! again, maybe a detection for amber lights could be used to make sure this doesn't happen!

thanks everyone for all your great entries!

i hope i judged that fairly...

Try as I might, I can never seem to get an entry in on time! But I graduate from College next week, so I'll have more time to allow for development - - - I think! These were some really incredible entries - I'm always amazed at what you guys accomplish without media - I'm still "crutching" it with media editors (but it makes my classroom presentations much more entertaining!), but just trying to meet the challenges has helped me learn LOADs!

An ecosystem challenge - you mean like a "food-chain" sort of thing? Or maybe a "SimEarth (tm)" type of thing? What's on your mind - this type of challenge can get pretty detailed amazingly quickly. And my creative waterfall just kicked in...

Can't wait to see what the next challenge brings. (sniff!) I've got a folder marked "DBPro Challenges" that holds four unfinished projects - complete with the competitor's projects! Gad, but I have soooo much to learn!!!

So, what's the verdict? Are you setting the challenge?
Ecosystem sounds pretty open ended. When I think of ecosystem, I think of the water cycle (rain, stream, river, ocean, evaporation, clouds).
What form of program? Game, simulation, 2D, 3D, whatever?

( 2b || !2b ), that is the question. The answer: true

what about just a sim type game in general. To vague?

I like the puzzle idea - i just might find time to enter something for that...

RPG, or ecosystem sim...both sound interesting. An RPG would be fun, but making an RPG would be hell without media, so I think i might go with the ecosystem thing.

Challenge: Ecosystem Sim

This can be anything that shows a relationship between different things in nature. There are a few different things you could do, but I think the most fun ones to do would be mass element sims, like the growth of a forest, herd AI, seasonal migration, or some land where you can watch some herbivore block creatures eat grass, some carnivore triangle creatures eat the herbivores, and the carcases and manure help grow the grass, or something like that. Choose something thats fun or interesting to watch, anyway.

End of Challenge: Friday 27th of July

@ CodeDragon:

Thats pretty cool, I spent ages watching it, but the group always tends to move off the screen, or just get really far away, so an auto-camera or camera controls would be nice.

I have no idea why it does that. I added a big planet that never moves, hopefully the gravitation force of it will stop them from wandering. I also added some basic camera controls, autocam on the entire group would be hard I think...

You can change the distance exponent now too. In real life it's 2.00 but for some reason that value causes the program to sliently crash, so I kept it as 1.

Not quite sure how it relates to ecology, but it covers the 'interesting' requirement! Crashes after about 30s here - most likely you have values somewhere which are exploding out of bounds.

cool code dragon. i programmed something very similar a while ago, this also simulates gravity

press, on the numpad, "enter" for 60 FPS, or "-" for slow/10 FPS, or "+" for 0 FPS (fast as possible)

the beginning of the code sets all the particles and their settings (color, gravity)

it sets up a central planet, with a bunch of moons orbiting

the following code sets up numerous randomly placed planets (set the amount by setting the 'maxp' variable)

the code can also handle charge

press key "1" to increase the velocity vector of each particle (/planet), press 2 to decrease, hold 3 to accelerate everything downward (gravity), press 4 to increase the mass of every particle, press 5 to stop every particle

I was working on a simulation of what penguins do to have fun, but I got really busy with school and stuff... It would have been pretty funny!

Let's keep the current challenge as it is - once a challenge has been set, we don't want to ruin anyone's idea six days in by chopping and changing.

For anynone not quite sure, an ecosystem is a system of interactions between living organisms and their environment. Attempting to simulate this should be a very wothwhile and interesting challenge.

I will put something in for this challenge - it won't be big as I'm under time pressure at the moment, but it will be something!

well, it doesn't seem as though anyone is that far along.. so no ideas will be chopped short.

the first thing i thought when i saw this challenge was that it was very much like a biology project that i had done a couple weeks back. so i wasnt in the mood to try this one

also, it would be hard to create something complex enough to extend beyond dots appearing and dissapearing and moving around on the screen to simulate different populations and species.

i'm waiting for something visually challenging that i can dig into.

This challenge was harder than i thought it would be. I tried making an AI but it's just not very good without the use of a learning AI(like fuzzy logic, or an artificial neural network). The fact that I'm going on a week trip on the 21st doesn't help.
