The start of my entry for the space invaders game:

I going to need to work on the originality aspect of the challenge and add a creative twist to the game, as right now it is more of a clone of the original game.

looking good.

Lower Logic, I know data for the brushes was ok for the last challeng but I thought using data to make the media like that was a nono.

Here is an example of what I drew in each paint contest entry. This one ws done with Hobgoblin Lord's entry..

As you can see, nothing fancy, just a way to test the line, circle, pencil, fill and airbrush tools..

Cheers!

Thanks, I'll change it so it doesn't use data statements for the media.

Generally speaking I think it is. But its a grey area.

The rule is there to stop people converting 32bit DDS files into data statements, however I personally have no problem with maybe using data statements to make little Space Invader Enemy thingies, or one of the shield blocks.

The thing you need to remember is that entries do not get marked on how good they look. Its more important to see good coding and clever tactics, etc.

Cheers!

P.S. Yeah I know I used 255,0,255 (RGB Values) for the transparent. Call me Old school if you like. lol

P.S.
the dot has to be over the button to push it.

lower logic, i cant get yours to work. I added a ceiling function since I didn't see one in your code, which I assume just rounds a float up. I get an array out of bounds error when running it.

You can easily simplify those images.
Here's an alien drawn from a 10x8 block. Just specify the size you want to have it drawn at, capture the image for use with your sprites, then use the diffuse sprite to color them.

Interesting option with the point of view change, what was with the \ before all the commands, i had to remove them to get this to run.

Looks like an escape character to me. The first post didn't have them, only his duplicate one did. Probably just a forum bug.

ouch, thats a lot of hand-written dots! Do I detect a hint of projectile physics in that missle code?

My gf has been sitting here with me giving ideas for the game. (and making sure I dont leave things out from the sake of laziness) With space invaders on our minds, we walked into a used game store next door to where we ate breakfast. To my surprise (i've been there several time before) they had a box full of atari games, including frogger, pitfall, and space invaders. Well, she just bought a 7800 on ebay last night. It's getting shipped to my address, which means I just got a 7800!

What did this have to do with coding challenges, absolutely nothing.

array does not exist at 167. What version are you using cause I have yet to get your working. I made a ceil function since you call one but I don't see any in code. I assume it just rounds the float to the highest int?

Here is an upgrade not a whole lot different but a few minor fixes.

And thanks to Phaelax for giving that example for how to make images out of data I was also able to make that little routine work for 3d objects. And we are allowed to use data... I hope.

Do you have the latest version of dark basic pro, version 6.2? It has built-in ceil and floor functions. Spopovich's code works fine here.

Spopovich, that is a really good space invaders game, very nice. I like the little story at the beginning of the game. What it needs is some sound effects. I think somewhere on the web there's some memblock code that can generate different sound effects, but I forget where I saw it.

How do you make images from data statements?
Nice game by the way, jut the delay on the gun is a little annoying! And the menu system needs to be de-bugged! Apart form that very good!
What has the storyline got to do with anything?

I like the intro. Whenever I shoot an alien box, the whole thing freezes for a second. Maybe just hide the object instead of deleting it?

I was debating whether to share this or be greedy and keep it to myself until after the compo. Its a page listing notes and their frequencies.
http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/notes.html

I wrote out a few songs in QB years ago, mostly metallica and even a cranberries song(wtf?) too, I think. Hmm, space invaders with master of puppets playing in the background?

I hope you had fun making the GUI version of your calculator.

We're already having a challenge Thomas, its a space invaders game. Still got a week or so, why not jump in with us?

Whats a space invader game without background music? I spent last night and this morning writing a "play" command which takes a string of notes and creates a single sound file.

Hey Phaelax you inspired me to work on my own music editor thingy. After working for a little while I cam up with this.

I have enter the first few lines of a song, a really easy version of This Masquerade. Its pretty easy to use you just put in the note name how long you want it to play the octive above or below the middle c octive and the order which you play it in. You can use the other two of the almost identical functions to play chords . Hope this helps people out!

not quite perfect - a few bugs probably, and the levels go on for ever lol but there u go

[edit] just been lloking though recent samples and iv realised mines not exactly space invaders, more of a block invaders lol but its got the same concept (sort of, they fall towards you rtaher than shoot at you but oh well)

Darth Vader you had asked about making images out of data statments. Phaelax posted some code that made an ailen block on the previous page, you should check that out. I also made it so you can now fire two shots and the menu is better. Phaelax, wow your game is amazing! Your game made me add some things to mine and thanks for that website with all the note frequencies on it, I used it to help me write that little music editor thingy.

Here is my latest version. I wished I had used more functions... but I had to be stupid and repeat commands over and over again.

@DVader-Nice!

Your programming has come a long way, keep up the good work.
I did clear level 2, and your game didn't know I completed the level, in regular mode.

@Phaelax - Very Impressive, enemies fire a ton, but I was still able to finish the game, Great job!
