Hi all,

The competition has started! Please see the compo page for details about the prizes, conditions and rules. There are some great NVIDIA cards up for grabs so it's well worth giving this competition a shot even if perhaps you would normally steer away from it.

Cheers,

Rich

Cool, I think Kangaroo'll like it , but what about just game competition (i.e. for all kinds of game)?

Technically this sort of is for "all kinds of game" - I mean, if you can't find an example of whatever type of game you want to remake you must be Peter Molyneaux or something

Cheers,

Rich

Entresting... but, how should it work exactly if we cannot use copyrighted material? Like, we cannot use a game called Street Fighter, where the main caracter is called Ryu right? But can I create like "Outdoor Fighter", where the main caracter is called "Hyu"? Will it still be under the class retro? Remake then?

Yes of course it will. You cannot use copyrighted material for the simple reason we want to feature the games on our website, offer them for download, etc - and we can't (legally) do this if the games are full of images and music belonging to Capcom, Nintendo, etc!

I think that's fair enough - there are no exceptions to this rule.

Cheers,

Rich

OK! Yes thank Net Eraser I'm more than interested... Here's some remakes I've got started already All in DBPro, in 320x240x16 res.

A Sonic Game, a clone of the Megadrive version. No scores, badnics or rings yet, and only 1 level, but its v smooth, the physics are damn near perfect and the paralax looks cool

Mortal Kombat 1 Obv. All moves except fatalities in place for SubZero and Scorpion, but energy bars don't display the names yet... collision is good tho, thanks to IanM for that bit of code help

Man this is one of the most complex things I've attempted yet, obviously for Lemmings the scenery has to be completely destroyable and buildable on. All skills work except bridgebuilding, and only 10 levels made so far. Proud of it tho

These games are believe it or not all made with my Kangaroo2 2D Engine which I programmed in DB and then DBPro. Its a very versatile piece of kit

Anyway I know these games won't be usable in the compo because of the ripped graphics, but some 3d remakes sound great fun to do, did anyone see my Bonuce game? A 3d Remake of Breakout

Anyway the prizes look great, I'd especially like to be in DBDN I'd find it v interesting and I'm sure I could add a lot to the development of this great language (Plug Plug Plug, lick lick lol )

heh, just reading through the competition rules page and saw this:

- Individuals or teams can enter - only the prizes listed will be awarded though, so you might want to decide how to share a GeForce4 card between 3 people before you enter!

i couldn't stop laughing!

anyways i'm gonna join up, wonder what game i'll be making ..... think i'm gonna go for a fighting game probably mortal kombat or street fighter! let me get this right, so i can't use any mortal kombat music? what about pictures for vs screens? is it ok if i like call it Mortal Combat?

Brilliant - I just started making an asteroids style game last night. I was going to see if I could get it into 20 lines but maybe I'll be a little more expansive instead!

Thank guys

Yes - I know I can't use ripped sprites in my entry, these are projects I've already made to test my K2S2d Engine I just put them here to show VERY accurate recreations are possible

I've got a few ideas of 3d style classic remakes, would it be ok to release a semi compilation with a few games together in one exe? Its just that a single Space Invaders or Pacman Clone would hardly be a showcase task... Or does it have to be one game? How about a virtual arcade you could walk around and play different games? Would that be ok by the rules Rich? Plus does it HAVE to be 3d? A really complex MvsC style 2d fighter would be awesome, or a really well design Metal Slug style platformer?

Hmm could enter my Dizzy game if I changed his name... Oooh the decissions...

Petrat I guess lots of people will attempt a 3d Pacman, but thats ok theres loads of variations, for example will you still have a top view, non scrolling view like the originals, or a top down scrolling view like the ngpc, or a semi 3d viewpoint like Pacmania, or a first person view for pacman... loadsa options And thats b4 even mentioning all the clone variants using different animals, cars, bombs etc

which should have a thread where everyone entering the competition states their retro game of choice they are going to clone+modify to enter into the competition!

Hexgear: "let me get this right, so i can't use any mortal kombat music? what about pictures for vs screens? is it ok if i like call it Mortal Combat?"

No - don't rip out the vs. screens or anything. You know, we really won't be worried if your replacement vs. screen looks terrible - the fact you have included it (especially if you make it appear in a cool way) is enough Don't worry, graphics are not everything. If your game plays well - then you stand a much better chance!

Kanga: "Or does it have to be one game? How about a virtual arcade you could walk around and play different games? Would that be ok by the rules Rich? Plus does it HAVE to be 3d? A really complex MvsC style 2d fighter would be awesome, or a really well design Metal Slug style platformer?"

You could do a "walk around an arcade" compilation - yes. But do bear in mind each game would still have to be original (in that the graphics/music are not ripped). But we would accept it. No it does not have to be 3D (see the updated rules list).

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks Rich I think I might do that...

Don't know if 2 months is enough time especially with what I'm doing anyway - would love to be in DBDN tho Not so fussed about the graphics cards (I have a GF4MX - I know that it can be outperformed but works well for me) and I'm not sure what I'd use the free DBS software for, I own DB1, Dark Matter, t3dgm, DarkBasicPro and Cartography Shop anyway lol I don't really need textures...

Cool Compo tho I shall do my best to get an entry for it

Like I said good luck to every1

Hehee... yeah the GeForce Ti 4800 + LIFETIME membership to DBDN (mostly the membership) is what seems so appealing about this competition

i think perhaps i've gotta come up with something quite original for this, cause might be some tough competition.
Original and Retro is going to be hard, but i think i've a crude idea of what i want to make

If Raven joins in, noone else will be able to win... who can compete with the creator of Tomb Raider and Command and Conquer Generals

"i think perhaps i've gotta come up with something quite original for this, cause might be some tough competition"

Well I myself could use all the things being offered
as prizes. Gonna be hard to compete since this is my
first foray into this software but should be fun.

"It's no ORIGINAL game... it's a retro"
Actually no read the rules again, they WANT something original, like a new 3d take on an old classic OR a retro title remade and improved!

"who can compete with the creator of Tomb Raider and Command and Conquer Generals" - Lol get off his case already - Raven never said he made any professional games single handedly, those games were made by large teams of skilled individuals, including, but not ruled by - Raven

well whatevers - would prefer not to be called Veggies either :: sighs ::

Kinda wonder about some people ... well anyways, been talking to a few others and looks like this is gonna be a large competition - and 2months isn't greatly long

Wonder what ideas other people will be comming up with - ya know that part that worries me is the source is to be released, always itchy about letting everyone see my source. I'm guessin' its to be comprehendable hehee

Oooh you have to release source? Argh I don't like that. People can nick it and change the graphics and pretend they did it Essentially if ppl want my actually decent code I usually sell it to them

VanB I know that's Raven's old name, but I've talked to Raven I don't think it is him - if it is it would be funny him sending up ppls ignorance like that tho

PS Thanks Petrat! I'm sure you're good too, can't wait to see your entry! Good luck every1

hey for example, if your making a retro-remake of say sonic and you character looks just like sonic (maybe red instead of the blue) and you called him monic (not saying i'm doing this) is it allowed?

hexgear..... read what Rich said on the previos page. Sounds pretty straight forward to me !!

If you MAKE a model, for example of sonic and it's a different colour + you call it tonic/fonic/donic etc etc etc ... then yes !!

Cos you wouldn't have ripped the original graphics + you haven't breached any copyright laws because it's not call sonic.

Um I don't want to sound like I'm standing up for Raven all the time hes capable of doing that himself but I have semi worked with him - More HIM helping me out And he's very good at what he does. He knows his stuff and is an excellent 3d artist, good 2d artist and certainly highly competant programmer - and I know I haven't seen half of what he can do yet

That said he seems to have offended some ppl here some how, so I'll stay out of it, other than to say I've been on these forums a while now and haven't seen him say anything offensive, or arrogant. He just states his opoinions based on his own experience. Just my 2 cents and thats all I'm gonna say on the subject, its not really any of my business

"I think Robert is staking Raven."
lol ummm no comment

Are all you guys entering? I hope so, last (unnofficial) compo, only Pathfinder and I actually entered lmao
