hmm Pacman, everyone is doing pacman.
I don't think I'll have the time to try but maybe...

It occured to me that maybe Raven could do Zelda... but I guess OOT isn't considered retro yet

I'm tempted to try a commander keen re-make.

i could make a Zelda Remake ... think about it Zelda itself is a Retro game, earliest one is 1986 for the Nes

making OOT is just the update of it - can't say it hasn't tempted me, but would be a little unfair i've had about 3-4weeks development time as is with a relatively finished system and really just worlds to create

however, if i started again - i guess that would count eh - hmm makes me think hehee ... i can't even start work on design for another 3-4days other than very rough concepts, so still time to decide

Here's an idea for pacman AI.

Remember snake? - the little game with the line that gets longer and longer? - well your pacman can do that in the background, giving your ghosts an indicator about where you are. You could have an array, storing say, the last 32 player locations, everytime the player move to a new grid location, shift the array up 1, and set the first array to the current position. Now you can check the ghosts grid location, see if it's on a recent player position, then follow the scent - that'd make it really difficult to shake them (in fact, speed for speed, you'd could'nt get away from them).

Hmm... good luck Raven.

I have decided not to go for anything too ambitious - one of those games that is really simple but can be so addictive ("just one more go, just one more go!"). The two months development time is pretty short.

I think I will try and include a level editor (built into the game executable) which should hopefully earn a few brownie points so to speak.

Then I will be able to spend more time on adding the little touches that make the game that much better.

Well, I've started making a small scripting system for an Ff1 style game, should be fun even if I do badly in the comp.

Van - that is a seriously vicious set of AI for pacman (superbly clever but would be a bitch of a game because you'd never shake them off). Definitely add in a drop of randomness about ghosts getting bored or something!

Cheers,

Rich

the Ms and Mrs makes all the difference
i'm a little bored right now so i'm working on a quicky game in DarkBasic Enhanced - i'll show it once i'm done, probably in an hour or two.

Considering I have only loose theories about the only 7, I'll try to stick to 3.

By the way their ARE 10 demensions acording to the "Thread Theory". They teach it in higher physic.

Hi,

This is a great compo. I'm using DB Classic V1.13 for my game but can I use the features of the 30 day trial of DarkMatter in my game for the compo?

And in the 'Extra' folder in the DB directory, there is a compression DLL made by Guy Savoie. Can I use it for the compo? And if I can, how about the source of DLL?

Thanks,
Asri Crew

yup any version of DarkBasic is allowed, Trial or Normal - the actual game is likely to be recompiled by DBS anyway within a full copy of whatever you use.

And the source is to be made public, unless you otherwise ask for certain elements not to be (thats provided you place)

just have fun creating you game and worry about the specifics later

I've decided to go for the poupar slide scrolling beat 'em' ups, moves will be focuessed from "super double dragon" doubt many people will know it, it came out on the SNES and in minute quantities, clothing will be focussed on streets of rage (i'm sure theres nobody in this room that hasn't heard of that one) and evironments on a mixture of the two.

The games basically gonna be 3D but still incorporate the 2D scrolling, as in the camera's gonna be fixed and you character can only move in 4 directions (up, down, left and right). I'm gonna make about 3 stages and include lots of moves, this will give me the chance to practise character interaction code (where you can hold, throw and grab other characters and objects in the scene).

oh yeah, and i've got approx 3 weeks to do it in. Wish me luck, i'm gonna need it!

I know a great classic game: "Thanatos" on ZX Spectrum. And it uses 3D graphic on Speccy too. Original size: 48Kb, DBP size: >6 Mb (sprite data not included). I will try to code a remake, if I will get enough free time.

Whilst I never played Super Double Dragon I'm sure most ppl remember the double dragon franchise there were many different versions in the arcade and various consoles. Spin off 3rd party clones included more successful games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight As Rich pointed out somewhere here recently there was actually a (bad#) hollywood film version of Double Dragon too!

Would the original Zelda for the NES be retro enough for a remake? Lots of fun, and it wouldn't be very hard to make it 3D.

you know what i thinks funny here... we can remake Final Fantasies and Zelda etc... yet Pokémon has just as much a Retro feel but is too recent hahaa

god i'm tired well been a few interesting ideas thrown around, right now i have someone trying to get me to remake mario but in paper mario style - which i'm actually not totally against ... but still work for KG and Rose to finish first.

which is a point i'll be emailing you the network code & all the animations tommorrow around 5|6pm-ish KG
with them out of the way i'll have just a single thing left on that list - Shaders which Mike has basically told me is as good as impossible until patch4 is released
be good to be able to breath freely about all that though won't it mate

The Rick Dangerous remake is going quite well. The animations are working and Rick can move left, right, and he can jump. I have put some question blocks in my tech demo and they work really cool when you jump on them. However, collision is a little bad because of what the character sprite looks like. I will have to smothen off the hat otherwise it will get stuck on other sprites!

Does it have to be the same type of game as the origonal? I.e. could it be an RPG or 2D platformer recreated as an FPS or third person shooter etc?
I'm hoping to enter a retro of an old DOS game "Dangerous Dave". It used to be one of my favourites...
Raven and Van B- I didn't know there were any other Pratchett fans on the forum[img][/img]- Discworld rocks!
Seeing as the half-term holiday's coming up I should have pleanty of time.[img][/img]
Good luck every1 [img][/img]

I would be really stuck if I had no half-term. Two months is a pretty short time to do a game in. Still, progress is encouraging (level editor 50% complete). I am dreading the part where I have to deal with collision and physics.

On second thoughts, I might do Hugo's House of Horrors. You know the old dos game where you play the boy who has to save his sister from the evil people who live in a big house... It might be easier than DDave...

Hi Petrat! I'll talk to ya Yeah you're right, Mario type games are very easy physics wise - But try doing a sonic game - add hills, speed up when you go down them, slow down when you go up them, destroyable scenery... THEN 2d platforming because complex maths wise lol

Puzzler: 1) Nice Avatar and 2) I too read and enjoy Pratchet

I started a thread over in the program announcements board for placing work in progress pics for anyone wanting to share with us how their games are coming on.

So to get it started I posted a little pic of the charactors I have designed so far for my "Chuckie Egg: The Retro Days" game(it's likely a name change will appear before the end of production) which I hope to use as the 2 choices for the player charactors, they are work in progress and are subject to change(infact have already in small ways) but the basics are there. anyway go have a peek if your interested and feel free to show me up with your better work, like I said it's a thread for all the work in progress pics for the comp if anyone's interested in showing us what their up to...

You know I just thought how weird it was that no-one had mentioned Track and Field!! man that was a real laugh and seriously competetive vs mates/family.. also there were other forms of it like the California games which was welly throwing and plate spinning and stupid stuff, also funny though.. Track and Field I remember from the arcades mainly but Cal Games from the C64 days..
