Welcome to October's Edition of the FPSCreator Level Design Competition. This month's theme is a bit different; the theme is: Adventure/RPG

Here are the rules:

- You may use custom media; to include entities, segments, sounds, music, and scripts, etc. Just remember that all the levels will be made public once the competition has been judged, and a decision has been made public.

- There will be NO stealing, pirating, or unauthorized borrowing of media/music/or scripts to be used in your level. If this is discovered, you will be automatically disqualified and possibly banned from the forums. If you're not sure if its OK to use someone else's material; then the best thing to do, is not use it. If you do use someone else's material, then you must have WRITTEN permission to do so (unless the permission is given in the license agreement; i.e., free for 'commercial or non-commercial'). Forging written permission will also result in punative action.

- Your level must be in an installer or a compiled .exe; no .FPM files will be accepted. There may be a file size restriction posted at a later date; but try to keep your levels as small as possible. Remember, this is a level design contest; part of the design process is to optimize the size of your levels. All entries must be uploaded to the designated site (we will NOT be using FileFront), which is Ozark Games. You will have to register (for free) as a member in order to PM Just One Old Man (JOOM) to receive your upload instructions. To register, click here
.

- Your levels must be complete; that is, they should have a clear beginning, and a clear end.

- Remember that the forum rules still apply; in that there will be no nudity, or swearing allowed. Either of those items present in your level could be grounds for disqualification (an attempt to contact the designer may be made, but is not required).

- The start of this contest begins the moment you finish reading this post; the Deadline is November 20th (2006). Any entries recieved after 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time (23:59 for the rest of the world) on November 20th, will NOT be considered for this contest...NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

___________________________________________________________________

- Your level must have a story associated with it; the story can be presented in any manner you see fit (through cutscenes, pop-up dialogue boxes, etc.).

- The physical "look" of your level can be whatever you wish (i.e., WWII segments, Fantasy segments, Sci-Fi segments, etc.).

- Weapons/Gunfights are not mandatory.

- The more involving (and well integrated) the story is, the better your chances are.

- Your level should include at least 2 items that you must collect, in order to complete the mission.

- Your level's objective may be one of the following: Rescue mission, Sabotage mission, Treasure Hunt, or Recovery Operation (get an item, and make it back out). You MUST have a level objective. If you aren't sure if your objective is OK; ask here for approval (or PM me, if you want to keep it quiet).

___________________________________________________________________

*Some basic criteria (what the judges will look for):

- Level Design (how well your level is layed out, and flows)

- Custom Media (this includes art and sound)

- Following the Theme (how closely did you stick to the requirements)

- GamePlay (your frame-rate is a factor)

- Fun Factor (is your level fun to play, or just something the judge has to get through; was there any innovations going on)

- Completeness (does your level have a clear beginning and end)

- Menu System (is the menu original, or standard)

This is a generic list of the requirements the judges will be given (their list will be more detailed). Each category can net you a total of 5 points each. After all the results are in, each entrant's points will be added up; the highest score wins (and so on).

Some items may be modified on this list, but nothing major.

You may now BEGIN.

The prize package is going to be a little more robust this month; since this is a bit different from most FPS games, I wanted as much participation as possible.

The Top 3 winners will receive a copy of JonF's new CorePack 2 (now Model Pack 5), Ozark Game's WWII Pack 1, as well as 1 prize from the list below.

The Top 5 entrants will receive a copy of either Landscape Pack 1, or Mega Music Pack (donated by Benjamin). Contestants 4 and 5 will NOT get to pick any further prize.

The Prize List:

- Higgin's Horror/Fantasy Bundle Pack

- Luke's Horror Accessory Pack

- Silent Thunder's Mega Segment Pack (101 floors, and 58 walls)

- Airslide's Decal Maker V6

- BullShock's E.C.S. Pro

Let me know if you wish to donate a prize.

I think i'll go with it, no much time but perhaps i'm able to go with this and finish it at time.

EDIT: No need to make a new post just to say this, KeithC, it's still a big challange to me, i work and i got sckool at night, but i like chalanges, if i'm not able to release it at least i had fun making it and i release it outside this contest just to see if people liked it or not

My love is seperated in 2 parts, 1 of them is 3ds Max 7, the other; FPSC.

Every one as a whole, but thats my opinion, I see adults being able to judge things better. Iam not saying I can judge any better, I wouldnt want to, because then I cant enter.

Rich said model pack 5 will be given to all 3 winners, meaning 1st, 2nd and 3rd all get jons pack and also their choice of user donated prize, so this month is a must to enter.

Hey, I judged one or two! (But I kinda get your point more generally. Still, you oughta give everyone a chance.)

On another note, that's a pretty tough theme, it looks like. Gotta do dialogue and all...

What I put was mostly to be used as a guide; I see no problem with "escape" though.

so, we get more points for using custom models right?
In that case I'm definitely using my custom guns.

Now the only thing I'm worried about is that my storyline isn't really inaginative.

It's not about just having good custom media; it's how you use it as well. A well designed level, using stock media, will trump a poorly designed one with "flashy" custom media.

So, we can use models from model packs we've purchased and free ones from the board right?
IE.. Model Pack 4 and stuff like MurkyMedia's 'Dude', etc.

Yes, the levels will be available for download, at the completion of the judging period.

It is up to you to make sure the levels are packed up properly (i.e. with RastaMan's product, or some other type of executable file...such as the ones used during each subsequent competition). Many EULAs tell you to make sure the media is not easily extracted from the executable, thereby protecting the copyrighted material. Additionally, you may include a license in the download prohibiting the re-distribution (in any form) of the media contained in the executable file (such as the one I included in the October Maze Level Competition from OG).

Just a note to expand on Keith's upload requirements. I'm usually asked various questions during each contest about the upload, so I thought I'd answer them here ahead of time.

- You must PM me at Ozark Games to request FTP upload information. I will reply to the request within 24 hours, and much quicker during the last day or two. The reply will contain the FTP address, the login name, and the current password. Please wait till you're ready to upload to request the info.

- As Keith said, the game must be compiled and/or packed (no FPM files). If you then want to "zip" the file for faster upload, that's up to you. The name of the upload should be unique to you and/or your level (i.e. not just "setup.exe").

- As I receive the uploads, I convert all characters in the filename to lower case and replace all spaces with an underscore to make it more acceptable to all browsers. If you do this before the upload it will make things easier.

- As soon as you finish the upload, you will PM me again at OG to notify me the upload is complete, and what the filename is. I will then verify the upload, backup the file, and place it in a safe and permanent location. After that, I will send a link to the download to Keith, who will in turn make it available to the judges. I will also PM you the link. Only the judges and you will have the link to your file until the judging is complete and the download links are released (unless you give it to someone).

It sounds complicated, but is really quite simple and effective. Good luck to everyone...

Could I make a level in which you're an SAS member in Iraq or will that be against the rules of the AUP?

Just make a adventure, whats dificult to understand in that?

You read it, weapons aren't a must, custom media isn't a must, but it might give you some points or remove you points depending how it was used.

Use your imagination.

As long as it follows the criteria laid out (perhaps you could have him infiltrate the Tower of Babel).

Iam going to try and make my level feel like a kids game, like spyro is. But there is one thing I cant do with fpsc, without using a modded exe, which is item collecting and to have it show how many you have on the hud.

Looks like the heat is on........ I am not a RPG fan.. and have never played a RPG game before except GTA Vice city which I guess is RPG... So I'll have to give it a good thought on story line .... I will give my best and see where I end up by the end of this competition.... Probably need more luck than others

Good luck everyone !!

You can make more than one level; but you'll have to decide which one to upload for judging....so, only one level per entrant. If you want to upload a different level, you may do so at any time before the deadline (just make sure to notify me).

This should be a very interesting competition.

Look at zelda, thats a great adventure game. You can talk to every character in the game and they all tell you some thing useful, or at least fun.

Well, I know what to do, I just cant be that bothered to explain it to people who dont understand how to make a RPG or Adventure game.

Use your mind, think up some thing fun, or go play zelda for a while.
