Thanks ^^.

Challenge 10

Challenge : Make a game with a special gameplay (I can change if it's too hard).
Vote on : originality
Time limit: One week (until friday)

Some ideas :
Use completely your keyboard or your mouse (why not a microphone ? ) or don't use graphs, just sounds

Challenging! I like it!

Edit: Okay, here's entry #1.

Edit2: You are a letterwrangler in someones computer. As they type letters on their keyboard, it's your job to make sure the letters get to the processor so they can be forwarded to the screen. Grab control of letters by using your keyboard and pressing the appropriate key. Then move the mouse to align the letter with the processor's gate (the grey-ish square). Your job rating depends on you making sure all the letters get to the processor. If you miss too many letters, expect someone to walk up behind you and hand you a pink slip of paper with your name on it.

"What happens if there are two of the same letters?" you ask? Well, they both move. It's not like you have a letterwrangler in your keyboard helping you out. Hey the job's tough, but it pays well. If you are good, we'll give you more work!

Hey Math, I hate to say it, but no one's posting. It might be a bit too tough of a challenge. I'd suggest keeping the Friday deadline, but change the challenge to something a little easier.

I think these challenges are too hard generally. Not because they're hard to do, but because in 1 week if I wanted to do them I'd have to sacrific my social time with nearly everyone I know as I work during the day.

I prefered it when the challenges were simple. It gave scope to do something special and difference. When they're hard like "Make an original game" not only does it give no pointers what direction to go but making an origional game in a week is very hard for someone who only had 3-4 hours to themselves in the evening to eat, wash, and generally do everything else in the evening. Maybe even homework too if you're not a worker like me.

Just my thoughts..

I personally think it is a great, if vague, challenge. RiiDii's entry was pretty damn original! Good work.

ok now im home from school and i have some time to type without the fear of being caught not doing what im supposed to . anyways i have been working on a battle type game it "kinda kinda" fits challenge 10 but not rly. so i was wondering if i could get some help on special effects myself.

Plz help in the same "way" im coding with the all well known GOSUB!!!! commands cause its a good way to keep stuff organized. i know i have to throw an A.I. and story and health etc. but i just need some stuff to keep going. and until some1 helps i'll mess around with that sound function to get some sounds.

BTW-HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE. I got "The Incredibles" on DVD lol it's pretty funny especially "Jack Jack Attack" when syndrome is like the "S" stands for "Sitter" "originally i was going to go with "Baby Sitter" but than i was have been walking around with a big "BS" lol. Anyways i know im talking alot.

plz comment,suggest(stories,ideas),and help on this game and tell me if i can enter it in challenge

P.S. - i had to quickly pull out sounds, and the original gun i had loaded as .x so plz dont mind the bad placing of the rectangle and the "rocket" that i tried to put into play is object number 50

Thx,

I'm sick with the flu and can barely make sense of which way is up, let alone code, or figure what's a good challenge. Thanks to those that tried it. Particles might be tough too, but right now Print "Hello World" is tough! So I'm no judge. Suggestions for Math?

I'd suggest more math based challenges. Something tricky, as thats the kind of stuff that we can really benefit from as coders.

And what about recode some db math commands like abs, atanfull, sqrt, sin... ? Or maybe some physics function (but a little bit harder )

Exactly.

I thought the origional "point" of this thread was to produce some snippets that people can reuse for their own projects if they wish to, for example the particle effects and so on.

By setting challenges such as "make a fun game" you're less likely to produce usefull snippets, but just quickly hashed together games that probably have a good concept but seem rushed.

Dont get me wrong - creating a game is a good idea. Nothing at all wrong with it, I just dont think its fitting with the theme of the thread which, as I see it, has been getting quite far from its origional point.

Now I dont think its a good idea to have a challenge to make a better sin function or anything like that, but it might be a good idea to do a fractal one, or physics are always good for making interesting and reusable functions (maybe a realistic physics demo for a very basic ragdoll.. Something like the Dismount games (do a google for Truck Dismount, its SO SO fun.. In a sick way.. )

Thats my 2 cents.. Enjoy the compo

To be honest, I agree that make an original game is a little too much to ask. I'm sure lots of people have really original ideas but don't want to waste them on a project made in a few days.

PS. For those who didn't realise how to make the files used in the picture drawing thing I made a few challenges back (its on Page 5), you use the same commands as the Basic 2D ones in Dark Basic. Just realised that you didn't know how to make the files.

Been away for a few days - looks like the challenge thread is losing it's way a bit. I've realised that setting appropriate challenges is actually quite hard, so I've written a few guidelines to help people who need it. I've based the guidelines on comments made above, in particular from Nic - thanks. I've added a link to the guidelines on the first post, and you can also see them here.

Thats brilliant Ric..
I like the Minigames idea. A LOT can be learned from making a demo of something as simple as Snake or Pacman, but with some modern techniques applied.

Things like the Labyrinth game I made, it contains a nice bit of maze generation code, etc.

I would like to participate in these compo's - I simply dont have the time right now though..

edit:
@KimoSabi:
Your sites quite nice. I like the layout. A few pointers.
unless you have no respect for your bandwidth, NEVER use BMP's for large images. Sometime's BMP's can be better for smaller images as there is not much overhead in terms of compression, etc (when I say small, I mean abuot 8x8).
What/who is hosting it? I find it quite slow to browse for such a "simple" site. By simple, I mean there is nothing special going on. Its just a site. It looks nice and its quite easy to browse, but there doesn't seem to be anything pointing at why I find it so slow to browse. It "feels" like its being hosted on a home broadband connection.
I like the way the code is "hidden". I just get lots of HTML comments. Dont suppose you know how thats done do you

@everyone- where can i get something to convert bmp to smaller images?(now i have to reupload everything on a dial-up connection

I've had a thought concerning the challenges.

Most games are made out of many components built onto a basic engine. What if each new component, such as collision, was a challenge. So the first challenge would be to make something simple, such as a moving model. The best engine would be carried forward, and the winner chooses the next feature to be added to the engine. Then everyone has a go modifying the engine to incorporate this new feature in the best way possible. The best new engine is chosen and that person chooses what is next to be added. The same could also apply to making media, so one challenge might be to make the best enemy model - the next to make the best room - the next to make the best textures etc. This might be quite good as near the end, there would be a fairly decent game, with each feature being done in the best way possible.

Simple... yet fun!

If it was a platformer engine then there would be a lot of freedom as to how people approach things. The first challenge could be to create a cube jumping around other objects. Then the winner might decide that having an animated person to replace the cube. Next they might want a simple enemy added to the game. Next they might want moving objects. Next they might want a weapon to attack the enemy. This could go on until its a finished platforming game with lots of cool features.

Simple... yet fun!

That could work quite well.. Kinda.. Whatever is made would have to be made in an "expandable" and agreed fashion..

@Kimosabi: If you use WinXP, MSPaint can save in JPG. I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro, but thats not cheap. The Gimp is meant to be a nify free picture editor capable of basically everything Paint Shop Pro has to offer..

@ Robocat: Interesting spin off project. What you are describing (which is really a community project with a twist) is a good idea, but it would have to be separate from this thread.

The reason for that is that these challenges are meant to be varied, accessible for newcomers, without media, and short term, so that if one challenge isn’t your cup of tea, you can wait for the next one.

A community project, on the other hand, has a single theme (making it more/less interesting to some people), is not so easy to get involved with half way through, wouldn’t be much good without media, and requires a more long term commitment. These aren’t bad things, they are just different from the agreed framework of these challenges which seems to work quite well.

If you do start up a thread for your idea though, I’d certainly be in!

@Raven:
I agree - MS Paint sucks in terms of how "good" it is, but on its side, its free with windows! I was slightly concerned when I saw the filename MSPaint.exe appear when I was doing a service pack upgrade though.. What on earth could microsoft have done to MS Paint to make it have security holes?!

I agree with Ric too (Its a good day for agreeing). Community projects are a great idea - but they're not small varied challenges. In fact their completely the opposite

@Ric Your probably right about the unrelated challenges being the better option. Since you made those guidelines as to what challenges should be like, hopefully this thread will pick up again and there'll be no need to create another similar thread.

Anyway, isn't today deadline day? Right - I'm going to put in a last minute entry ..... see you in an hour or so ......

P.S. Just tried Rii's 'Letter Wrangler' - 100 hits, 57 misses - took me a while getting the hang of it, but it's a really cool idea.

The only problem with building up to a game is that we aren't suppose to be using media. Without it though, a game seems dull.

@Tom_d
Thats pretty cool dont see the point but cool lol

@Professor Yaffle
That is also cool but also dont see the point lol i dont rly get the point of the game

@Phaelax
I agree we arent supposed to use media but if we dont kinda dull although u can make cool games without media

@robo cat
Personally i think that is a GREAT IDEA because than it is combining the best of everyones talents. I may start a thread and if so I think we should base it off of a game that covers alot of different things for everyones skills to be tested. You can find the game I find suitable for this at http://www.2flashgames.com/f/f-850.htm i posted my game that i tried at this earlier but i am limited to greatness and it would be nice to have a modeler come in the picture with some swords(what it actually should be). I hope u guys like this plan if it sounds ok plz say so and i'll start a thread.

@Nicholas Thompson
Yes i have MSPaint that is what i used i just used .gif cause that is smallest in size thx. I'll go in on my website and change those screenshots to .gif also.

@Everyone
HI, lol i haven't been on for a while been quite busy i wont enter this challenge cause i kinda suck lol(in fact i forgot what it was even on).

Thanks Math89 Ok, next challenge - already got some interest in this theme, so:

Challenge 11

* Make a virtual pet
* Time limit - <edit> 7 days (until Saturday night, 9/4/05)

___________________________________________________________________

If you hadn't guessed, this is an AI contest. The idea is to design your pet so it responds in different ways to user input - for example, you might set up characteristics such as happiness, greediness, behaviour, etc. which are affected in certain ways when you feed it, kick it, exercise it etc....... you get the idea!

Ok - my opinion again. I think its too big.

Its a great project if you have nothing else to do with your time, but for those of us that dont get home till late and have other stuff to do, 5 days is not enough.

Yet again - another one I am going to have to miss out on, and I think quite a few other people too.

Although it is specific, it is great.

Enjoy the compo - I look forward to seeing what people produce.
