Hello, and welcome to this month's FPSCreator Level Design Contest. This month's theme is: Horror with a puzzle element.

Here are the rules:

-Your level must have a horror theme to it; be creative, horror doesn't mandate zombies.

-You must include a puzzle element in the level. A switch that opens a door in another room isn't really much of a puzzle, and won't be looked upon favorably by the judges. The more elaborate (and complete) the puzzle the better; just remember that the judges have to actually finish your level for you to be entered properly. Make sure the puzzle meshes well with your game; a series of levers and switches that unlocks the soda machine doesn't serve much purpose in the game.

-You may
use custom media; to include entities, segments, sounds, music, and scripts, etc. Just remember that all the levels will be made public once the competition has been judged, and a decision has been made public.

-There will be NO stealing, pirating, or unauthorized borrowing of media/music/or scripts to be used in your level. If this is discovered, you will be automatically disqualified and possibly banned from the forums. If you're not sure if its OK to use someone else's material; then the best thing to do, is not use it. If you do use someone else's material, then you must have WRITTEN permission to do so (unless the permission is given in the license agreement; i.e., free for 'commercial or non-commercial'). Forging written permission will also result in punative action.

-Your level must be in an installer or a compiled .exe; no .FPM files will be accepted. There may be a file size restriction posted at a later date; but try to keep your levels as small as possible. Remember, this is a level design contest; part of the design process is to optimize the size of your levels. Upload information will be posted here shortly. All entries must be uploaded to the designated site (we will NOT be using FileFront), which is Ozark Games. You will have to register (for free) as a member in order to PM Just One Old Man (JOOM) to receive your upload instructions. To register, click here.

-Your levels must be complete; that is, they should have a clear beginning, and a clear end.

-Remember that the forum rules still apply; in that there will be no nudity, or swearing allowed. Either of those items present in your level could be grounds for disqualification (an attempt to contact the designer may be made, but is not required).

-The start of this contest begins the moment you finish reading this post; the Deadline is October 1st (2006). Any entries recieved after 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time (23:59 for the rest of the world) on October 1st, will NOT be considered for this contest...NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

A list of the judges and prizes will be compiled shortly; but for now, I suggest you get creative.

You have One Month. Begin.

-Keith

*Note: Upload information has now been included in the rules above.

My ongoing prize donation can be added as usual.

Even though horror isn't my thing, I'll may actually give it a try and see what kind of puzzling horror I can come up with

The winner has the choice, one of the winners can pick one of them, either Commander Josh or the FPSC Landscape pack.

Last time we were allowed to send a compiled exe, but it did not have to include an installer.

@Xplosys; I should clarify that. Yes it can be a compiled .exe; as long as someone without FPSC installed can play the level fully.

@Accel; It's to keep kids from giving away any pertinent info to all the bad people out there.

Hello KeithC,

I just recently thought of another question I should ask...

Are we allowed to include an introductive/cinematic movie before/after the level begins/ends?

Thanks.

I shall enter this one. I was going to enter the last one but I forgot about it and didn't upload my level.

Oh, do prizes have to be FPSC related? If not, I'll enter my fancy DOS temperature converter!

Hello KeithC,

I have recently downloaded 2 of the previous competition entries, Disturbing 13's and Candle Games', and I noticed they were really short (I would have downloaded them all, however I am on 56k, so I don't know if their were longer entries). Now I have a question regarding lengths, how long are our levels allowed to be?

Thanks.

Disturbing13's level is what I would call medium to large, as far as a good size for a level in them competition. Candle's level was pretty small; though it's not the size, but what you do with it that matters. Remember though, that you can have areas in the level that require you to back-track and perform certain functions (especially for the puzzle aspect), so don't be afraid to "re-use" an area that you already went through instead of creating more rooms.

Yes, yes; I thought I should've re-worded that, but the heck with it. If you think that's good, don't forget what Ozark Games' little motto is (on the front page of the site).

That would involve TGC putting it up, unless someone bought it and put it up. Outside of my WWII Pack, I have no control over who puts up what as a prize.

Hi,

Just to confirm, I am happy to continue in the role of Judge and to also put up the $50 prize. I am glad to see how this competition has developed and look forward to playing / judging the next round of entries.

Cheers, Rich.

It converts all 8 temperature scales and works within the command prompt. Ya, I know, most likely nobody would want or need it, but it's all I have that I am willing to contribute.

I'd like to thank all those who are volunteering either a prize or their time as judges, in this competition. It's participation from you, and especially the contestants that make something like this take off.

Just as a side note to Jon out there; how about putting up your Core Pack #1 one more time?

I ingorned the other contests, I guess I'll try this one.

I have one question - For puzzels, can it be like those in let's say, Half Life 2? Like putting a battery in a charger to open a gate or something, maybe a bit more complex, but basic concept?

That would work as well; a puzzle where you have to gather various components to complete a part of a puzzle that leads to an outcome. Sounds good.
