** UPDATED 7.10.2005 **

Hello all,
Lately i've been working on improving my game 'Zombie Hunter'.
im trying to rewrite it into DBPro to gain a little more speed and some cool dx9 special effects

About
Quote: "
Name: Zombie Hunter Open Source DBPro Project
Style: Horror FPS
Time in development: 1 month 20 days
Release date: November 2005 - first DEMO
Point of Game:
*You play as Carl, a human zombie hunter. your job is to destroy all zombies..
*in Survive Mode you score by how long you survive and how many kills you got when you were still alive.
*in Story Mode you get to play Carl from the moment he first saw his wife turn into a zombie to the end when eventually he too turns into a zombie.
*in Multiplayer Mode you get to play via LAN or TCP/IP Deathmatch and Capture the flag. i will see if i can add survive mode with multiplayer.

at the moment i'm concentrating on the Survive Mode, just to get the game engine up and running."

Demo Features
Quote: "
* AI see, follow and attack you.
* Pistol, Shotgun, Uzi and Rocket Launcher
* Everything is controled by Physics, nothing is pre-rendered
* Ragdolls
* 1 house, you start in it and play in it.
* if i can get my new computer by the next 3 weeks, there will be dx9 shaders added to the game."

ps. added screenshot.

no, currently there are no zombies in this scene.
im going to add them and write some ai when im finished with the hud and fix bullet collision to materials and add some particles.

i would love to get help with the modelling part.
i really cant model anything. just take a look at that "flashlight"

the zombie i use (the one i made) is for use with dbc.
its really low poly, and i want to have higher model detail in the dbpro version. to add some realism to the game

a new image is added; now player can shoot wooden crates until they explode and leave their pieces behind.

however there is a bug: when box is killed, 6 plains are created. that is easy, but: newton makes it really slow. it has to go through alot of newton code to make this possible. it dropped from 63 to 9 when all the wooden boxes was killed. that is horrible. but ill come back to this later.

edit,
i found the bug: when box is destroyed, 6 planes are created right? so, each of these six planes will also make 6 planes each when the right amount of life is removed from them.. aka 2 pistol shots.
that is why it is so slow. i made a flag that makes sure if box is destroyed once, the remains of that box cannot be destroyed so i fixed it

oh, and i also made it possible to, if you fall/jump from a high place, destroy boxes when you land on them

i need to change host

Jack,
those texture look awesome and i would really like some new wall textures. could you send me some?
and i rather not use the darkmatter models. i think it would be better to use my own in that case

Updates,
Particle effects i would like to show you but my website has exceeded its bandwith

thanks for the textures
i just remembered i have an old account on another host
ill upload the images there.

update,
now there are lamps in the game.
shoot them and the light will move aswell. with shadow turned on this is really pretty but slow, i have a geforce 2mx i have added support for people with SM1 ++ so people who dont want to use their processor calculating the shadows can render them via their gpu

edit,
i dont get it... the images aren't showing

edit2,
ahh now i remember; that was the reason i changed host

edit3,
the images are up again

anyone know what i must to make the shadows darker then they are?
its kind of weird when you look at them.. shadows are darker than the ground

Lukas W,

That Jonny Ree has great skills in art, 2D and 3D. I am not a 3D artist, however, I figured it useful to model you a medkit for your game. It is not the best, but it was good practice anyhow.

hey.

if anyone is curious about what the game is when playing it, i made this movie just for you.
at the time all you can do is walk around and shoot wooden boxes.
im having some serious trouble with the AI, the thing is: i load the object and apply collision, but it keeps on going straight through the floors....

Gameplay movie 1
it is very low res, because if not it will be a 20mb file...

if anyone want to see my "original" zombie hunter, click here.
i wrote that some time in 2003.. and its my 3rd game i ever made.

edit, fixed download link

I hope this is going to turn out well aswell, hopefully it will be alot more scarier than the previous two zh games.

Kjelle (at walabers forum) think he might now the solution to why the zombies keep falling through the floors, so ill look into that before i do anything else now

edit,
problem fixed. now onto the ai.

hey i though id give some updates on the ai im working on atm.
its doing great, the zombie walks around the room its positioned in (randomly ofcorse..). if it sees the player it will walk towards it and when its close enough it will hit you. still no animations, since Jonny Ree Hasn't boned the model yet, and im using convexhull for collision which will eventualy become Ragdoll collision, but first i need it boned

however there is one bug im struggeling with: when the player collides with the zombie the zombie is thrown out in space and outside the newton world, where it gets deleted and the game ends
im still trying to fix this.. but does anyone here who is fairly familiar to newton know what is going on??

when this bug is fixed i can continue and give the zombie som health so i can kill it and eventually blast it away with the rocket launcher when the model is boned and 'ragdolled' it will be most awesome
then ill add the healthpack provided by nanobrain and finish the level with better textures and stuff and eventually there will be a first demo release

note that the source does not come with the demos, it will come with the full game. (maybe not the Story mode part since that might take ages to do)

what do you guys say if i add some multiplayer deathmatch to the game eh? then ill have to learn multiplayer coding, which im learning at the moment aswell.

here's the flashlight(in DBPro)...but i think it looks horrendous...

you can use it if you want though... (at least as a new placeholder...)

yes, you are right thanks for the tip

anyway, i thought id give the latest news about this project:

ai is going realy slow, im having serious trouble with that part where the zombie gets thrown out in space for no reason at all.. but i think it might be something about the command 'NDB_BodyAddForceGlobal' command.. ill try and see if i can recreate the DBC version of the ai, whitout using newton, and take one step at the time from there.

i also got a musician he has made me some songs to come with the game, that is really cool and the tunes are great i also have some ambient sounds but i havent added them yet

NanoBrain,
that model of yours, the MedKit one.. i have a problem with that..
not even Lithunwrap could read the .x file.. but all turned out well when i downloaded a tool called 'quick3d'. i could then re-save it as an .x file, open it in lithunwrap and re-texture it and re-save it. now it works.

oh.. and i also made me a new sig

edit, dont forget: i changed host now, so i have 500mb bandwidth instead of 250mb the im uploading the DBC version to this new host as we speak! be ready.. 16min left

thanks but i got it uploaded now

download the DBC version here: Zombie Hunter v1.7

DBPro version *news*
the AI is about 80% finished, i need to get the zombie boned and animated.
also there is this bug where the zombie suddenly stops reacting and when you collide with it/shoot it, it gets tossed out in space.

im working on a level editor where i can place the starting points for the zombies, weapon positions, ammo, medkits, change material on objects etc. etc. its about 5% finished.

i need to finish the Srvive Mode level and texture it.

there is a bug when reloading that needs to be fixed.
thre is another bug if your first bullet hits a zombie/move able object the program crashes. after the first bullet this does not happen.

i need to get new weapon models, ammo models and textures

now i cant think of anything else that needs to be done before the demo

just posting to let you guys know that this project has not died.

im struggeling with the AI error and noone seems to know what to do.
i cant believe that noone else hasn't written any kind of AI in Newton. thats unbelievable
so im kind of stuck there.

instead im working on a level editor. it is great (not).

NanoBrain,
thanks im glad someone likes the project. not many people post, so i feel like i do this for nothing it's encouraging me

Jack,
yeah i need some textures. (see first page)
but i thought id post the list here:
Quote: "2d Art/Texturing
Weapons
Zombies
Metal Texture
Water Texture"

also feel free to add whatever you think might fit in a horror game, i will see if i can put it to good use

edit,
about the zombie.. i have the original texture and it would be nice if i could get the texture in different variations. like someone has only one eye, someone have blood all over them, they have different clothes etc. etc. i can send the texture i have so [enter person who will do it here] can change it however he want. remember: the original zombie texture is created by Johnny Ree. i think i must ask him first if people are allowed to edit his texture

edit,
ive removed some textures from the above list that has allready been made

Lukas W,

If Johnny Ree okays editing of the texture, I would love to take a swing at it. If anything, it would teach me things, in its end maybe turning out a good variation or two.

i tried to make a zombie with only one eye, and some blood on the clothes.. but i ended up ruining the pretty texture i suck.. i really suck, and its not fun anymore (i still have a copy of the original, dont worry)
