Hi all,

The Advanced Terrain Expansion Pack for DarkBASIC Professional 5.4+ is now available. We are not officially releasing it until early next week because it requires you to register it on-line within 7 days of installation and that system isn't totally live yet. But we are confident enough that it will be ready within the 7 days limit that we can give you the download link here and you can use it in "trial" mode until then. Please note: "trial mode" doesn't disable or stop anything from happening at all, it's just the term we use internally for an un-registered product.

Grab the EXE file here:

http://files.thegamecreators.com/darkbasicprofessional/packs/Terrain_Expansion_Pack_Standard.exe

You need DBPro 5.4 installed to use this - and you will need to activate it on-line after installation.

If you find bugs, report them in the Bug Board, not in this thread.

Cheers,

Rich

Okay, I'm probably wrong here somewhere:

- Have 5.4
- Activated online
- Install terrain pack
- Run example

and it doesn't recognise "make object terrain".

You have to activate the plugin, go into the DBPro Compiler folder, and run TGCOnlineTrial.exe.

Don't enter anything in the email address or password boxes, just click next and it will generate a certificate that is valid for 7 days.

General - the demo is in the Help\Advanced Terrain folder. You can also see a link to it in the start menu.

Game wiz - I created the base texture from 4 separate textures and put them in the texture generator using the plus version of terrain.

This is freaking fabulous. And great timing. I've been trying to do something like this in the last couple of days and now it's possible in five minutes. Thanks, TGC Team.

Hmm, we'll have to pay for the plus version? Sounds fair. It will probably contain the new universe commands. But I hope that the multiple UV's are not exclusive for that upgrade.

Take care

Forgive me if I missed something, but how is the terrain/camera collision handled, I could not find any collision commands...? And yet, you can walk up and down all over the terrain. Is this an automatic thing associated with the new terrain features. I think I will certainly be buying the advanced terrain plus, if it is the right price.

Is the texture.bmp rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise compared with the map.bmp in the demo?

Gazzaden: There is no collision being checked against the terrain. In the demo the command GET TERRAIN HEIGHT is being used to check the height of the camera's current position on the terrain. Much like you would use in the Matrix and the old terrain commands.

One thing I'll have to check is how compatible this is with Nuclear Glory's Collision DLL. I don't think they'll like each other very much but I hope I'm wrong.

-EDIT-

As I suspected, NCG DLL doesn't work with this type of objects :s The program runs normally but no collision is active on the terrain. Hopefully NCG will be able to take care of this at no extra charge

Take care

Been playing with the new commands and all i can say is WOW. Although i do have one one question.

I placed a transparent water plain in the demo landscape using an FX shader to make a lake. Looks great, but it culls the lake bed underneath, I can see the underside of the sky box through the top of the lake but not the lake bed. If i move below the waterline i can see the lake bed but none of the terrain above the waterline, just the skybox!

I guess my question is, can an object be prevented from culling the terrain? if so, how?

fantastic stuff!!! very beautiful terrains!

and even cooler is that it seems to work with Newton well! here's a screenshots of Newton spheres bouncing around a new terrain object:

EXE DOWNLOAD: http://walaber.dbspot.com/misc/newton_terrain.rar

the only issue seems to be with the size of the terrain. I tried a heightmap of 128x128, but DBPro crashes on either the make mesh from object or make memblock from mesh command. if the heightmap is 64x64 (like in this demo), it works great (no matter what you set the set terrain tiling command to - in this case 4)

will there be a way in the future to get the mesh data for higher resolution terrains? I think the problem must lie in the limitation for mesh/memblock sizes?

i think one solution would be to have a make meshes from terrain command. this would make a set of consecutive meshes from each terrain mesh. for example, if the terrain is 8x8 meshes, the command would generate 64 different meshes (with consecutive mesh numbers)

Go Go Gadget DBPRO!

wow, sounds really nice.
Great work

Walaber, that demo with Newton in it is really awesome, on my PC ( really old and slow ), I got a constant 30FPS

Just one Query, With the Plus version of the Terrain expansion pack, will there be a type of trial, so that we can see what extra commands we get, and if we will need them or not.
Would be a shame to fork out $20 ( not much admittedly, but I'm cheap ) to find that I'll never use the commands.

Jess.

[EDIT]
Hmm, after installing and gaining the 7 day trial certificate, I still cannot compile, it asks me to register the Plug-in again, but doesn't give me an option for the trial this time.
And now I cannot compile anything without the message coming up, and with no uninstall, it makes it hard...
Damn.
[/EDIT]

[EDIT 2]
Never mind, after installing 5.5, I did the online verification registration thing-o and all is well now
[/EDIT]

Found a bug, you cannot hide the induvidual limbs of the terrain because the auto camera hiding/showing whether it is in the camera's path or not takes priority over hide limb.

Can anyone provide an insight into the "Set Terrain Scale" and "Get Terrain X/Z Size()" Commands? What are you scaling the terrain from? And are the Get Terrain Size commands supposed to just return what you've scaled the terrain to? How would i scale it so that it was 5000x5000 DB units for instance? Other than that its very impressive, i forsee lots of compo entries having lots of stunning scenery
