alright, so i stumbled across this game, Minecraft. anyone here who HASNT seen it before
shame on you
anyone who has seen but not bought it
YOU CRAZY!!

i really recommend this game, it is still in alpha, and the graphics are "crappy" (acually, iam pretty sure he intended it to look like that, as it is like a pixel game in 3d.)
the point of the game is really to survive, using whatever tools you can make from the materials you find.
the days are very peaceful, but at nights, zombies, gigant spiders and zombies roam!

seriously guys, i really REALLY recommend you to check this game out, it goes for about 10$ to buy it, so really, it is worth it!

I haven't bought it since the server went down and I got the current version for free, though since it's not a premium account I don't think I can be connected to a server that another non-premium account member is. Or maybe that's just because the login servers are down, I don't know.

Minecraft is awesome, I'm waiting patiently on the multiplayer survival mode, then it'll kick off (4 PC's networked at home, ready to 'craft).

I played the classic free one, and I didn't get it. Do you literally just walk around placing blocks and breaking others? I played it for a good 10-15 minutes and nothing happened.

Insert piccy sig here. Eh? Why didn't that work?!?! Must ring help-a-noob. What was the number again? .... where am I?

It's more about surivial Fallout, like when it get's dark, zombies and arrow launching skeletons come out and try to kill you. You have to make a base, find coal to make torches for light, find metal to make weapons and tools. You can make a boat, minecart and tracks, even a record player.

Of course, that's going by the latest version, so maybe it's gotten a lot more involved since you last looked - I think you should give it another go, try out that survival mode properly.

I played it just now. I couldn't figure out how to interact other than select a block and place it, or break and existing block, and it never got dark, so I never saw any of these zombies etc. I was playing the 'Classic' version though, because that seemed to be the only one you could play for free. Is all the cool stuff in the paid version, or did I just need to wait longer for stuff to happen in the classic version?

there is a HUGE difference between survival mode, and the old classic

basicly yes, but it does go a lot deeper with the crafting options, I mean, by now, you can craft a LOT of stuff.
me and my friends spend the whole yesterday building a tower and a huuuge mining shaft, and iam going to build a "whatever it is called" >_> where you plant plants and stuff, cant remember the name..
anyhow and start making bread for us all! *roleplay is the key in the MP mode atm, since you cannot die and monsters cannot be killedXD*
and we just hit a pretty huge iron vein
and we have found some diamond. still not sure if we should make pickaxes or shovels from it.

i mean, considering what you can do now, IN THE ALPHA, imagine what you can do in the full verson!? i dont even want to think of it xD

I find a lot of Minecraft is about preparing for exploring a dungeon, or going looking for a dungeon - slaying pigs to make bacon, growing crops, cutting trees to make tools, killing cows to make armour and chickens to make arrows... so your well prepared before venturing down a mine or dungeon. The mines are often massively complex, so it's easy to get lost - but at least if that happens you have the option to dig diagonally up, just try not to dig under the ocean .

I found that a diamond sword lasts for ages, 8 times longer than metal - for me it felt like a waste to make a diamond pick or any other tools, but diamond swords do a lot of damage and last for ages.

While I'm here, might as well put up some recipes:

Minecraft is awesome. I bought it a couple months ago, been having a blast with it.

To everyone asking, the survival aspect is only for the pay-version of the game (Alpha). The Classic/Free mode is basically just a sandbox mode where you place blocks and have no restrictions. The survival mode is where you have the day/night cycle, monsters, you require tools and materials to place things, etc.

The good thing about classic though is that it has a relatively stable multiplayer mode (when the entire website isn't offline ), whereas the multiplayer for survival mode is very much a WIP.

havent played it yet but heard a lot about it. I think people should be able to build worlds and upload them and connect to other players worlds, it would be like an mmorpg

The author was making over $350,000 a day from the sales as of a few days ago. That... is just insane for a one-man indie company. I will buy this today, if only to see what the big deal is

It's all about creating worlds really. Survival isn't available in multiplayer yet unfortunately, but nonetheless it's fun building worlds with friends. You should check out some of the videos on YouTube.

pretty sure you can play survival with friends
only thatyou cant kill stuff and you cant die^^

I've been playing it for ages, before it really got popular. I am totally in love with this game, I've been majorly distracted from working on OpenFPS to play this. Sometimes I wonder why I'm playing it, but then that music comes on, and I think...This is why I play minecraft. There are no words that can describe how awesome the audio is... My favorite aspect is the scary noise that plays in a cave when you are near a dungeon, that just gives me the chills. Also, I hope that the graphics never change, they are a bit cubish but that just fits the minecraft style. I also love the crafting system, the way you just put the ingredients into the shape of the object you are crafting is perfect. Notch did an amazing job with this game, he's my game developer hero.

I have an idea ... How about we set up a TGC Minecraft server?

dood, i'm totally getting this since it's a pay-once thing. i thought it was a subscription like most online games.

and i was just about to get back to DBP. guess that won't happen anytime soon


Remember those old guys? They made epic renders, I think one of them was called DaVinci, and all they used was MS Paint. Sometimes it's just skill....

Note to self... If your gonna have an indoor fire, make an obsidian fireplace first .

Haha I know right. I think his line of thought was that he would destroy any blocks that are on fire before they could spread the fire to their surrounding blocks - Then it looks like he just gave up after he saw how hopeless it was.

You can play the Classic mode (aka the sandbox mode) without paying, but you have to have a paid account to play Survival mode. There are downloadable clients you can use as well if you'd rather not play in a browser.

The World of Minecraft client (there's a link to the site under the Community section of the Minecraft site) is a useful client for Classic that lets you move faster and fly around, so it's a lot easier to build huge structures with it.

Well, I downloaded the world of minecraft package and the Minecraft.jar from their site, but when I try to run minecraft.jar it says failed to load main class. What do I need to download to run this game?

Edit: The run.bat doesn't work either.

Double edit: I have never payed with paypal before, so I don't know how it works. But is it possible to pay through IDeal? Because my parents don't want me to have paypal....

i played minecraft in the early alpha, then when i saw what they did with crafting, i stopped playing, because it really made the game slower and more boring...

but its a good game overall.

Smoke me a kipper, ill be back for breakfast.

On the windows version you're supposed to run the .exe

The only methods of payment i'm aware of are paypal or credit card :\

Spent all last weekend addicted to this game. I both love it and hate it at the same time as it's one of those games where you can end up spending an entire day playing it and not notice. Haven't had that with a game since the original Roller Coaster Tycoon.

Ok, honestly, I don't know what file to download. If I go to minecraft.net and press the alpha download link, I cannot log in. And I can't find any other .exe on that site that I could put in the World of minecraft folder. Could someone please explain cause I would like to start playing it

The free version doesn't have the exe. What you need to do is, download the minecraft.jar file from Minecraft.net, and put it into the bin folder. then there should be a batch file that you click, with a login prompt. Clicking minecraft.jar directly won't work.

Both of them have a sandbox mode, just that the alpha version is more advanced and has a survival mode also.

I got a custom Minecraft classic server going on right now, private, just intended for the LAN here at my house. Me and my dad have played around on it. The neat thing about it is outside of the normal sandbox features, you can place water blocks, explosives, blocks across a circular radius, lava blocks, you can fly, and so on and so forth.

You can still play the alpha without logging in (ignore the login failed message), just that you might have problems playing multiplayer. Although, perhaps he changed this in a later patch.

I have been totally glued to X's Adventures in Minecraft videos (first episode), I've watched over 40 of them! I usually find watching other people play games painfully boring but Minecraft is so unpredictable it was really entertaining just to watch his escapades and see what he created. As a side note, over the 10+ hours of video I only saw one bug in the game (got stuck trying to get in a boat) and one minor graphical glitch, and this is still only in the alpha phase! Impressive.

I have now purchased Minecraft (it's only 9.95 Euros while in alpha) but I'm having problems running it on Linux. I downloaded the Minecraft.jar file and it runs fine until it has loaded the world, then it crashes before displaying it and the window closes. Is this a memory issue? Can anyone help me?

I run a server for me and my friends, and this is the latest "SkyShot" as I call it (basically a map):

@Obese, I dont know how linux works with java but on windows problems like that can be resolved by fixed by updating/reinstalling linux.

it's unlikely to be corrupted on a default linux install of java. Make sure you have the proprietary sun java software installed, not some open source java engine implementation.
