Is there any alternative IDE's out there?

Currently the original bundled one seems a little slow on my EZBook2 (Code::Blocks is fast and responsive by comparison). Or if there is a way of toggling some of the features to increase responsiveness?

Yes, a few years back, an AGK-plugin was made for Sublime Text 3. Before the Geany-IDE arrived with AGK2, this was my favorite coding IDE. Setting up Sublime Text for AppGameKit will take some use though. Here are the relevant links:

If you want speed, Sublime Text 3 is very capable in my opinion.
