The 10MB limit for the entries. Is that for the compressed version or the uncompressed .exe?

Final submitted file to us must be 10meg or less (I don't care if you send me a ZIP file, RAR file, damned ZOO file! so long as its 10meg or less).

Cheers,

Rich

.ZOO is a compression format from yesteryear (like .ZIP, .LHA, .RAR, etc).

You can still get the ZOO archiver from various places.

Cheers,

Rich

a TAR (RAR) with an additional Gzip compression will compress things pretty dang small (^_^)

Does the demo application still stand, then?

I wouldn't be overly impressed at plugging away for a month and having my entry auto-binned because there wasn't an .exe present.

If you really must you can submit source code - but if it does not compile we are not going to debug it for you! Basically if "F5" fails then we'll bin the entry. Sorry but most people seem to be able to send us EXEs so we're not going to bend too far on this one.

Cheers,

Rich

My mistake. I didn't realise the demo still compiled .exe files out in the open, but the month will be well up by the time the competition ends. Will they still function after the demo period runs out or do they operate on the same timescale?

Also, are there any other less obvious triggers that'll cut short the evaluation time prematurely, like disabling the application at 100 runs or compiles? I've been caught by 'hidden extras' like that before, and it's not fun.

is it ok to use sequenced or re-mixed music based on music from the original titles?

Here is the game I started :

http://www.geocities.com/pugh2317/ESCTHEBALLS.zip

I did it one night on duty. (As I am in the Army)

but the problem is I just made it up.

I don't care if I win or not. Its the taking part that counts but I only used ASCII Charactors for Graphics and a few Coloured pixels. So it is retro.

I used my own collison routine but it would be helpful if some1 (Raven maybe?) could show me the correct calculation for 2D and 3d Collision. As I only checked each four corners and top mid bot mid left mid and right mid of the balls using the POINT commond It took me about 5- 7 hours to code.

I like to code a lot but I have a problem with my PC at home. It has tons of games on it with distract my big style from coding.

Detials:

Movement

Cursor keys

Point Of Game:

?

The balls bonce of each other WOW!

Tell me what you think!

that game has a real retro feel to it! cool! since u have no objective i'll suggest one for you, what about getting from point A to point B withought getting hit by any of the coloured boxes? you could make blue dots slow, orange ones moderate and red ones fast etc (all other colours inbetween would have their speed respective), you can make the stages maze-like and as u progrss, you go up against more and more boxes, (with more red ones) so the aim would be to se how far u could get? anyways nice use of 2D

My game (Dizzy 3D) has been made smaller because I cant get enough speed on the level and its the only way to sped it up.

yes I think mine is fading into the shadows of some of the upper class titles on the prowl around here.. I have to say this compo has made me get down and try and finish a project, infact it's about the first time I have gotten to the middle of a project yet alone finishing one , the thought of the NVIDIA Card to upgrade my now ageing G2 is enough to keep me on the case..

That ascii game with the face reminds me of an old game I had on the Amstrad, called 'caves' or something, there was a top down ascii view of a cave, and you had to escape, avoiding the obstacles, collecting potions and stuff. It was fully scrolling and colourful and had incessant PC speaker music. And there were some river rapids which got you into an infinite loop of currents if you moved just right, so you had to switch the computer off, you couldn't save or exit or anything.

Either that or Rogue, which I never played much, I kept getting killed by snakes.

Actually, I might try and remake that, although I haven't had a very good result from filling the screen with ascii, see my 'enter the matrix' game in the 20 line challenge for that.

Once I was but the learner,
now, I am the Master.

OMG Rogue! I forgot about that game. I got hella far until I got killed by vampires. Hey anybody remember a game I think it was called rogue for the C64? It used sprites and had random dungeons etc...

Yo Rich,

I was wonderin, how will you judge a DBP made game and a game made in DB Classic? Coz as in graphics, DBP supports more special graphic effects like particles and shadow mapping stuff etc and it's just impossible to do it in DB Classic. And umm .. will the participants get any certificates for participating ?

Thanks,
Asri CE Crew

Yeah, I was wondering that too.
My game is a bit slow because of the large amount of objects.
People with DBPro and patch 4 don't seem to have that problem...

Where is Rich anyway? Haven't seen him on the forum lately.

@Rich:
If the competition is over. Will we just see the 3 winners of the competition or will we see a top 10. Or a top x with all participating games. I hope it will be the last thing because I also want to see myself in the list

yeah i support that too, having a kinda table of all competition entries in order of score showing each assesced category and equivalent score. So even if you didn't make it into the top 3 you still know how you faired with the other dark basic games! The list could be placed on the dark basic site for all to view. It could actually be very usefull, knowing what you did well in and what you didn't so you could work on it in your new games! i'd kinda feel sad though if my game came last judging from my current position that ain't far from the truth

everyday of life is a new chapter that has already been fortold but is up to the soul to capture.

I hope we get to SEE, PLAY, and LEARN(have the source) from ALL! Retro game entries.

This would go a long way in teaching everyone neat tricks, proper coding methods(and some not so proper maybe), and help to further everyones programming skills!

So my vote is that we get to share and enjoy everthing that gets submitted, not just the winners.

I'm almost done with mine, another day maybe...and while I might not have time to go over my code to make it look nicer, I would still like to share it with others.

Can't wait to see and play all the great efforts by everyone!

Silly question but Can you just send in the source code and leave the exe out as this would save a whole 2 meg which is precious......

Also Whats the best way of uploading a 10 meg fiile ? I could uplaod it somewhere and pass on the URL but if there was an uploader somewhere or another way would be good.

Good luck to all!. Its all good fun.

There will be a page for each game submitted with full info on it. Yes you have to send me an EXE.

So far we have enough entries to nearly fill a CD!
