I'm a Buddhist; if you're interested in finding out more about Buddhism, I can answer any questions or offer up recommended readings and websites. Though as religious discussion is forbidden, I'll leave my email address and the offer up on the table:

Question:
I thought Buddhism wasn't really considered a "religion"? I had heard that it was more of a general way of life, and that you were free to follow other religions?
not trying to start a religion topic here, just a quick question.

EDIT:
Quote: "Phail. Religion discussion is not allowed here. "

As long as we're not discussing it, (E.G. saying why its right/wrong, why we should/shouldn't follow it, what it teaches) I think we are ok. There's nothing wrong with just mentioning a religion, as long as we don't start to discuss its points.

That's only because the immature/extremist bigots end up posting inflammatory comments intended to offend anyone who doesn't agree with them. Judging by the relatively small number of people that actually view this thread, I'd say there is less chance of that happening, but I wouldn't want to start something here anyway.

Although, I don't really see the harm in discussing Buddhism specifically, given its [inoffensive?] nature. I'll finish reading the wikipedia article after work today so I can have some legitimate excuse for discussion.

this has bugged me, Thiers no introduction threads for new members.

better late than never #ahem#

The facebook drama, the myspace aftermath and now the twitter monolouge of countless ”lols” Iam glad i got out of that bull###t years ago, so know i can skip this generations addiction and impotency at a ‘normal’ social life. I work Monday-Friday, then the weekend is mine to enjoy. I write (bookwise), read, game ocasionally, archery, used to hunt, air rifles, and of course have a social life outside a computer.

Dam i still havnt introduced myself, My names Conor, nice to meet you random people who ill never meet outside this nutcase.

No really a fail. I'm not exactly discussing religion, I'm merely offering up my email address and saying that I'm a Buddhist. The reason religious discussion is banned is because they can end pretty badly as people can end up being offended or others acting immature.

It depends on the definition of 'religion' you listen to, some definitions include Buddhism, some don't. Because 'legally' it's a religion and for the sake of argument, I refer to it as a religion. It is compatible with other religions, though it can depend on how you follow the other religion, some denominations can actually clash.

I doubt the mods would think it's fair giving Buddhism special treatment. If people really want to ask questions/discuss Buddhism, drop me an email and I'll redirect the discussion to a more appropriate place.

This is meant by no means as a offence, am i correct to assume that buddhists shave thier hair off. Its a common sterotype and well, i hate stereotypes.

If its a doctrene of thiers that needs alot of explaing then dont worry a simple yes or no shall surfice.

Buddhist monks do. It's not a requirement for anybody to do it. I have quite long hair and until a year ago I had dreadlocks, so it really doesn't matter. If you look at the statues of the Buddha (not the fat one) you'll see that he has hair himself.

Anyway. I shouldn't be answering these questions here.

It wasnt curiosity that killed the cat...
It was the impact resistant tyre of a 4X4 camero going 40mph down the street.

So people will understand the reference, others will look at me wierd.

My aunt and uncle were like that, it took half a year before we found out they had another kid. It was a little bit annoying, but I suppose it was nice of them to invite us over for a family get together with some very nice food and for us to meet our two ickle wickle cousins. Another aunt and Uncle quite cheekily told nobody that they were getting married so that nobody would buy them presents. They got married without inviting anybody, it was a surprise, so we bought them a toaster.

Lazerus, you spelt Shall'nt wrong. It's Shalln't, as the ' takes the place of the o in shall not. (Although I'm not sure it's even a word.)

Wow. This is some pretty deep stuff. Out of curiosity Sepp, do you follow Theravada(Hinayana) or Mahayana? I'm only about a third of the way through the main wiki article, but I think I'm leaning toward Theravada.

I just listen to the teachings that work best for me. I tend to read more from the Dhammapada, which is a Theravada text.
