How have two days gone by without anybody posting anything in this thread?!

I guess people had a productive weekend! I didn't really. Well, actually, I did start learning more about Unreal Engine. Definitely prefer it to Unity.

Hmm. I don't have much else to say but I feel obligated to write for some reason. Anybody like pickles?

EDIT: Why are quotes in my sig not working? Did a moderator accidentally delete mine and then attempt to fix it?

Quote: "How have two days gone by without anybody posting anything in this thread?!"
Forum activity always drops when I myself stop posting for a few days.

I have been at some neat hot springs resort, which was excellent fun. Three big, naturally heated pools, in the mountains. The blasted internet connection though!!!

I found an internet connection, it was secured, but I guessed the password correctly on the first try (name of the resort). It was an internet connection meant to be used by guests, as indicated by its name being "resort_name-GUEST". So I was connected, Windows said the signal strength was 'excellent', and it worked at first. Then, for some reason, the connection never worked again. My computer remained connected, picking up and excellent signal, but the internet connection itself stopped working. Sometimes a page would load a quarter of the way, then the connection would die. Sad times. Getting away from the internet for a few days, though, proved to be pretty nice.

Oh, except for the stupid situation with music and audio drivers. The other day, when I was messing with Realtek's stupid drivers so I could get StereoMix to work, I was trying to record some songs from Spotify (I knew the internet would be crap). While I had been recording that night, I had successfully disabled the crappy audio equalizer thing, but I wasn't aware that the crappy audio equalizer thing was still screwing up the audio going through StereoMix. So my audio recordings sucked, and I was stuck with that music the whole time. Shucks, first world problems are no fun.

It was our anniversary yesterday, so the gf and I went to go see "Kingsman: The Secret Service". It was pretty good, Samuel L Jackson made me laugh so many times it was a ridiculous.

However, the movie was not what I expected. I didn't realize it was based on a comic book series, so imagine my surprise when the over-the-top stuff came without warning. Very very enjoyable movie though. The ending is especially hilarious.

It uses this song in the end credits and it works perfectly:

Yes, every time you go to edit it, it will do that. Go into your profile editor and replace those with regular quote marks; they should stay.

Signature! For some reason, any time you go into the profile editing page, any quotes in your sig will have been replaced with
(forum replaces that text with a regular quote mark when posted (it still replaced that amp part with a regular ampersand inside of the code box)) or something like that. You have to replace those with quotes or else they come up like that. I shall do it with this post.

EDIT Interesting, any case of & followed by amp is replaced with &.

Indeed, sadly this forum in general seems to be slowing way, way down. People just don't seem to be posting as much. There's a lot of cool stuff going on right now, too. I think I shall make a thread tonight about the things I have read about recently. Lots of scientific things!

Yes, and a million views!

Quote: "I think I shall make a thread tonight about the things I have read about recently. Lots of scientific things!"
Excellent! New threads are what we need. About particularly interesting topics, or even mildly debatable things. Mildly debatable things can stir up some friendly conversation, as long as people don't chop each others' heads off.

Huh, apparently you can hire a 'professional poster' to jump start activity on a forum. I wouldn't mind being one of those, getting paid to participate in a forum.

All that for free, even after we told him to just mail them back."

lol

Did I mention we added the new MAF sensor and it didn't solve the problem? Can't remember if I did. Anyway we took it to an auto-electrician so he could put his $30,000 testing machine on it and the MAF is reading perfectly. That rules that out as the problem. Next step is to clean the EGR gate since it's periodically generating "EGR gate stuck open" faults on the ECU. Going to be a big and incredibly messy job me thinks, but worth at least ruling out that thing as a problem. Unfortunately anything could be the cause of the throttle delay at this point.

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooo! Had work yesterday and I'm too lazy to come to TGC most of the time.

-----------------------------------

*Clarkson Voice* I have news! *end Clarkson Voice* Since I got a day of work on Saturday ($24/hr * 7.5 = $180) and a day yesterday ($20/hr * 7.5 = $150), plus the government decided to give me a bonus in my youth allowance (YA is basically the dole, but I'm studying so it's ok) of $109 this fortnight, I now have enough to entirely pay off my $175 debt to Mum (from buying the quad) AND buy a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium! Hooray!

I should really just get a proper job and then I could buy whatever I want...

EDIT: Couple of moderately amusing things I saw today (in my email and on Facebook, respectively):

I think you did.

Quote: "Going to be a big and incredibly messy job me thinks"
Gotcha. What kind of things do you have to remove to get to that?

Quote: "Unfortunately anything could be the cause of the throttle delay at this point."
Perhaps the throttle cable itself is experiencing some sort of space-time warp, so when the pedal pulls one end, it's a bit before the other end of the cable moves. Have you driven through any black holes lately? Gah, we had to take ours to the mechanic last time we drove through one. The stupid black hole had splattered all over the inside of the car. The seats were super gravitational (annoying when trying to get out of the car), two cylinders were blocked on the intake manifold, and the light from the headlights was all warped by the gravitational field. I tried to clean off the black hole splatter, but my rag collapsed into itself. /rant

Jeremy? Ah, seems like he has been dismissed from Top Gear. So that's the end of that show, eh?

Quote: "plus the government decided to give me a bonus in my youth allowance (YA is basically the dole, but I'm studying so it's ok) of $109 this fortnight"
Ah, what is that? I don't know what the dole is either. Sounds interesting.

Drat.

No idea. Possibly the exhaust manifold, but I think the EGR stuff is reasonably self-contained.

Quote: "Perhaps the throttle cable itself is experiencing some sort of space-time warp, so when the pedal pulls one end, it's a bit before the other end of the cable moves."

Actually it looks as if the entire cable has been sucked away, because there is none! (It's a fly-by-wire pedal )

Rofl that's new

Quote: "Jeremy?"

Of course.

Quote: "Ah, seems like he has been dismissed from Top Gear. So that's the end of that show, eh?"

Well apparently he got into a punch-up with one of the film crew. I've gotten the distinct impression that he's a really hard-to-get-on-with kind of person and the BBC's probably glad to get rid of him, even though Top Gear is by far their most profitable show. Last I heard there was a massive petition to keep Clarkson on the show and the BBC had yet to make their final decision.

Quote: "Ah, what is that? I don't know what the dole is either. Sounds interesting."

The dole? Unemployment benefits. The government pays you a fortnightly amount as long as you meet certain requirements. Basically if you're unemployed (not earning anything or only very small amounts) the government will support you as long as you can prove you're either actively looking for work or studying full-time. The amount is quite small, just barely enough to live off and usually only if you're sharing the house rent with someone else. Obviously it's a bit of a broken system since you can intentionally muck up all job interviews and still be classed as "looking for work", but eventually they will force you to go to job-seeking classes and other unpleasant things until you get a job. Even so a large percentage of the population lives entirely on the dole.

In our case, for some reason we receive a government payment called the "Family Payment". I've never bothered to ask Mum what it's supposed to be for, but it may be because we're homeschooled. Not sure. Either way, it's per child and $270/fortnight. Since I turned 20, the payment cuts out for me and we lose $270/fortnight. We rely on that money, so because I'm doing TAFE full-time, I can apply for Youth Allowance (which happens to be $285/fortnight). Mum takes $270 (which she calls board and lodging - I don't care since if I were living on my own that would be devoted entirely to living costs, and I wasn't getting any money from the Family Payments before anyway) and I get the remaining $15/fortnight. Bonus! The downside to that is if I don't do my TAFE (which is an IT course, incidentally) the government will come after me to make me pay back the money.

Java is annoying. C++ isn't much better, but at least it has the concept of constness (no, final or immutability is not the equivalent of constness. The ability to have any reference be const is quite liberating).

So I have been on these forums for about 4.5 years now. And literally, only moments ago, did I realize that these buttons exist at all:

Just one of those things, I guess, that have been there all along, but that you've never noticed.

Quote: "It's a fly-by-wire pedal"
Right, I should have know that... Well, then, the electrical cables and such must have been affected by the black hole.

Quote: "BBC had yet to make their final decision"
Unfortunately, it seems they have formally announced that their final decision is indeed to let him go.

Quote: "Unemployment benefits. The government pays you a fortnightly amount as long as you meet certain requirements. Aaaah, just like America's welfare system.

Quote: "Obviously it's a bit of a broken system since you can intentionally muck up all job interviews and still be classed as "looking for work""
Same issue here!

Quote: "but eventually they will force you to go to job-seeking classes and other unpleasant things until you get a job"
Unfortunately, I don't think we do that here. But I may be wrong.

Quote: "The downside to that is if I don't do my TAFE (which is an IT course, incidentally) the government will come after me to make me pay back the money."
Also seems like something we don't do here in America (we might), but definitely should!

Seems to be two weeks. You'd get some people cocking their heads at you if you said that here. However, I am a little surprised that we don't have any common word for two weeks. We just say "two weeks". A word for that would be nice.

I've used the Link button extensively over the years, but never once clicked the Toggle button. AFAIK the FB button is a relatively recent addition.

Wait, what? You don't say fortnight?? Huh, it's used extremely commonly in Australia and the UK. It's so weird how words that I use every day might be completely unknown in another region speaking the same language. Then again, US English is definitely not the same as UK English...

Incidentally the Wikipedia article says the word comes from some unpronounceable old English words, meaning "fourteen nights". Makes sense

Finally bought it! Hurry up, snail-mail! Shame it's a weekend. Gotta wait 'til at least Tuesday before it'll be here!

To Dar13, Comet, DJD64 and Clonkex:

Go forth and read upon the one place in which we are discussing amongst ourselves, so that we may begin our rather dubious task that is before us.

Also, just want to point out that Unity 5 seems to hate me, so Unreal is what I'll be using from now on. This is a random fact brought to you by me.

Also, another thing, I thought of a fun app that would display random and fun facts on your phone. I was going to call it "Fact App", however... say that out loud, and rather fast, and you'll see why that's a rather poor choice

We do, but they're ice cream parlours and not fast-food restaurants. Also they don't use that picture of a red-head girl. Here, this is what our Wendy's is like: http://www.wendys.com.au/. I believe I checked before and worked out it was actually the same company, but don't quote me on that.
