So, I think I'm going to just go ahead and buy the tools to fix my iMac.

It's definitely the hard drive that fried, now that I have had a few more months to research it.

And, surprisingly, it's easier to replace the hard drive on my model of iMac (late 2012) than it is on any other, since the glass and screen are not separate like they were on previous models. Here's what you have to do:

1 - Separate screen from body of iMac
2 - Lift screen up five inches at a 45* angle to disconnect two cables
3 - Lift screen up the rest of the way at a 90* angle to disconnect the bottom cable from the mobo/logic board
4 - Remove left speaker (unplug its cable, and lift out)
5 - Unscrew the hard drive from the body of the iMac and disconnect SATA cable
6 - Put new hard drive in, and reverse steps 1-5. BOOM, you're done.

The best part is that now that I've watched like five videos on how to do it, I feel confident that I could easily do it myself. The only downside is spending the money for the specific tools I would need, but it would still be cheaper than taking it to my "local" genius bar (which is in Rockford, Illinois, about 45 minutes south of my present location).

So yeah, that's what I'm going to do on Saturday probably

Here is what I would have to do in my desktop:

1 - Open side panel.
2 - Unplug 2 wires
3 - Slide harddrive out of hard drive bay
4 - Slide new hdd in
Reverse

I have done it on my laptop too though which turned out to be a lot easier than I would have thought. All I had to do was unscrew the bottom cover, unplug the SSD, unscrew the SSD and put a new one in.

All the others were pretty bad films so I wouldn't be surprised if 5 was.

Don't forgot to plug the SATAN cable back in.

IDE think IDE remember to do that.

Yes yes I have a regular PC as well and it is very simple to swap drives out like that.

I had the iMac for almost two years, when it randomly shut itself down sometime in March. Actually, what happened was that Firefox become super-non responsive, and I tried to force quit it. This whole process froze my computer and I waited for about an hour for it to become responsive. When it didn\'t, I resorted to do a hard-boot, and... it never booted again. Tried every trick in the book, including resetting all the fans and such, and nada. Zip. It\'s now a useless paperweight.

At the time, I thought it couldn\'t have been the hard drive dying because of a few other problems that had been present, but now that I\'ve done months of research I can say with confidence it was indeed that which bit the dust. Can\'t even remember why I suspected the logic board, but whatever.

So, now I can pick up a 2.0TB hard drive, and order the tools from iFixIt.com and hopefully have my iMac back up and running by the end of next week. I just need to order the tools first, and figure out what drive to get. I definitely want at least a 2.0TB but I may have to stick to 1.0TB for cost-effectiveness.

Also the reason I waited so long to do this was because the cost of having an Apple-certified repair service probably would have been at least triple what I would spend just doing it myself. But I was reluctant to do it myself at first since I spent so much money on the thing anyway, and might damage it more. Now that I\'ve had more time to think about it, I\'ve decided that if I break it more, it won\'t be the end of the world.

My actual goal is to get it up and running, and probably resell it somewhere so that I can get money to buy a car...

On a similar note, I am actually using Windows 10 more at the moment just to see how well it does perform, and also because my GPU drivers keep crashing on Linux

I will do a review after I do a proper clean install! Right now it's still the upgrade which holds a lot of "residue" from the previous version of Windows. Once I do a clean install I hope to resolve a bunch of issues I had, like the aforementioned awful file transfer speeds.

did an upgrade + clean install this week, so far I'm liking it.

I never used 8 / 8.1, coming from 7, It feels like a mashup between basically the same old windows and android widgets, skinned over with a modern flat web theme.

The license terms do come off rather draconian, and it is somewhat irritating the amount of 'share this with MS' you have to turn off, but the actual user experience once you just start using it is pretty good.

performance wise, I haven't noticed any real difference.

You just lack the points

Fixing drivers on linux also requires debugging/diagnosing the problem and (usually) writing a shell script to fix it, so it is related. Seeing as the initial response to a malfunctioning driver was "that's weird" it can be classified as the first stage of debugging: denial.

Proprietary drivers for my AMD R9 280X. They don't so much crash as they just forget their settings every time I log on.

I feel this may be an issue with Xubuntu, however (yes, for those keeping track I've jumped from Kubuntu to Linux Mint and now to Xubuntu, trying to decide which I like best and so far Mint is winning by a longshot), since on no other Linux OS did these problems occur.

But, I'm going to be doing some heavy rework on my PC here soon anyway so I'll probably set up a new dual-boot system. I'll clean install Windows 10 on one partition, and Linux Mint on the other. Probably gonna do that tomorrow since I have to wait on the parts to fix my iMac anyway.

EDIT: UGh I can't find the DVD I burned the Win10 ISO to, so I guess I'll reinstall Win7 on here tomorrow and keep that going, and dual-boot Linux Mint as well. My plan is to use my 3TB HD that I picked up a couple of months, and partition it in twain, giving 1.5TB to Linux Mint and whatever else back to Win7. Should be more than enough room for each partition, and I can always put another "shared" media drive betwixt the two, so that I may be able to transfer files easily amongst the two oses.

EDIT 2: Oh, I still have the Win10 ISO saved to my downloads folder. So I'll just burn a new one. Problem solved

MAN I love Insurgency!

-------------------------------

For those of you who've been wondering what happened to the latest Flash Buddies videos... wonder no more! I've just been not willing to post them as much recently because it seemed like I was spamming. However since the two most recent videos have a new intro (!) and actually have an end card (!!) and MUSIC (!!!) I thought it was time to post the last few We're working on a completely new intro, but for now we've ditched us saying "Flash Buddies" and bought the rights to a cool chiptune track that we're cutting up for the intro and outro/end card. Overall the quality has improved dramatically due to the aforementioned new intro/outro, extremely high bitrate, improvements to our workflow that doesn't involve handbraking the videos into intermediate formats and using a much improved audio setup for single-screen recordings.

So for your viewing pleasure... the four latest FB videos!

(old intro + audio)

(old intro + maybe old audio, can't remember)

(new intro)

Ah, I know the AMD drivers on linux arn't the best but I may have experienced something similar with my nvidia card.

One thing you could try is run whatever you use to configure the settings as superuser, that way it will propperly save settings even if the files it tries to change are protected. (if you are changing configuration things that are not stored in your home directory).

Edit: I you could also give the open source drivers a go, I have even heard that they work better with AMD cards than the closed source drivers.

Is that your collection valentine. Pretty impressive, but it appears he put holes in his zelda posters He has 5.1 surround but all in the front. He also doesn't have a CRT screen for the older consoles or for lightgun games. (I just added a 1701 commodore monitor to my game cabinet and split the signal between the big screen and the crt. Older games look amazing!) He doesn't appear to have a Fairchild Channel F, a big hole in the collection considering that's the first cartridge based console. Appears to use manual switchers, I'd recommend auto switchers from Phillips: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Definition-Automatic-Component-Switch/dp/B001E1THL2

This switch has a second benefit in that, if your tv is like mine, you want to route in both component and composite but there's a shared port. With this switch, you just put the yellow into the green (or whatever component color your tv uses) port.

(Ebay has them as little as 25/pc)

Overall, I give this collection a 10/10 because retro gaming = best gaming.

Day 2 after doing a Windows 10 clean install (day 1 being, of course, yesterday!)

So far, it runs ok. File transfer speed problem was fixed, so it must have been something that messed itself up during the upgrade (and is probably what contributed to it taking FOREVER to copy the files from the DVD to the hard drive).

There are lots of fun new features that are pretty flippin' fantastic, for sure. Windows Gamebar, which works with Xbox, lets me record my screen when I play games, and stores it in .mp4 format so that I can edit it with any application that supports that. Sweet!

It also auto-detected which motherboard I had and somehow downloaded the drivers for it, so I didn't even need to install them with the disc it came with. Similar with GPU drivers, auto-detect, auto-download, auto-install. All of this took less than two minutes after start up.

I'm going to have to write a new post - 10 things I like about Windows 10.

Yodaman Jeri umm be sure if you have an NVIDIA GPU to download the drivers and perform a clean install... WDM? vs. WHQL drivers are massive... not to mention not having PHYSX installed if needed...

Hehe, what made you have a change of heart and give it another shot.

With the game bar, it is great. I've not yet figured out how to change the directory I saved to - I could prolly look it up, but I paid for a Bandicam license ages ago, so I've taken advantage of that instead. I know people say to use Shadowplay, but I doesn't work on everything.

But I am glad that I switched. A few extra things to learn because they've changed how things are designed, but not a steep learning curve for me.

Performance wise, it's been very good to me. Microsoft Edge? Chrome still performs faster for me, but I am giving it a good trial (I am typing it in) to see how I like it. Not as bloated as some IE versions have felt - seemed odd that they ditched IE as I felt performance wise, it was in a good place when they ditched it. It just needed updating in terms of supported technologies, especially as it wasn't very compliant with HTML 5.

But I found it installed drivers for me, but doesn't seem everybody has that benefit. We've had some complaints from customers at work with regards to monitors they've bought, because when they've upgraded to Windows 10, their resolution is very low - obviously it's the monitors fault!

I was never completely against using Windows 10, just some of their policies they have. Although now that I've done a bit more research, it really isn't as scary as people are making it out to be. Sure, the possibility exists that Microsoft will use their information they have on us for evil, but honestly, Google knows WAY more about us thanks to Android, which I used for 4 years. So there's nothing Microsoft may learn about me that Google doesn't already know.

Also, part of the reason I wrote my original post on Windows 10 was because the upgrade process was such a pain in the arse. But now that I've done a clean install, this thing is quite the nice OS. Of course, I still wish they chose a different color other than pure white for window skins, but that's very nitpicky and I'm sure there's many many workarounds I haven't discovered yet.

But otherwise, games run fantastic on it so far. Minecraft runs great especially for some reason, no idea why since it's usually a poor performer just because of how it was coded.

Quote: "But I found it installed drivers for me, but doesn't seem everybody has that benefit. We've had some complaints from customers at work with regards to monitors they've bought, because when they've upgraded to Windows 10, their resolution is very low - obviously it's the monitors fault! "

Yeah, when it first started after the install the resolution was probably 1024x768 (which on a 2560x1440p monitor looks absolutely ridiculous ), but as soon as I went to go download the AMD drivers, suddenly my display updated and lo and behold, the drivers had been installed - along with the AMD Catalyst Control Center. Thankfully it didn't download the God-Awful Raptr app that eats up so many resources.

BUt yeah, Windows Gamebar is probably my new favorite thing ever. A screen recorder built-in to the OS? That records in great quality and doesn't eat up any extra resources? SOLD! $$$

AS for Edge, yeah Chrome is still better by a longshot but I wouldn't be surprised if Edge gains on it quickly. It is quite the nice browser, and I never thought I would say that about a Microsoft browser

Now, before anyone on here calls me a hypocrite about switching back to Windows, I would just like to point this out. I never said I wouldn't ever use it again, I just said that I'd like to not have to. I've always preferred Mac OS X/Linux over Windows, but you've got to admit Microsoft have done a pretty stellar job with Windows 10.

-------------------------------------

And now for something completely different.

I've discovered an interesting 2D engine called love2D which looks amazing. It uses Lua, so now I must learn Lua. Anybody can recommend good resources on Lua maybe perhaps plz kthxbai?

Why yes, that it would be Clonkex!

So guys, I'm starting a Minecraft server, it uses Bukkit and as a result you have to play with Minecraft 1.7.10 because the CraftBUkkit guys won't update it anymore because of some lawsuit with one of the original creators of CraftBukkit...

Or would you guys prefer a vanilla server? I like the plugins like WorldEdit which make creating a spawn hub RIDICULOUSLY easy and fast.

Screw doubleposts, I'm lucky as hell to be alive right now you guys

I'm just gonna copy>past my facebook status. But for clarity's sake, here's what these words mean.

Kayla = GF
Deerfield = road we were on when accident occurred
Texas Roadhouse = an expensive restaurant with crappy food
Home Depot = an expensive store with crappy tools and home supplies

Quote: "So, I'm gonna start this off with these words. We are okay, including the dumbass kid that hit us.
Now, I'm going to continue with these not-so-friendly words. HOLY HELL SUMMER OF 2015 COULD YOU BE ANY WORSE AND NO THAT IS NOT A CHALLENGE YOU MOTHER****ER!
Kayla and I were in a car accident, on our way to Walmart to go get some movies from the $3-$5 shelf and maybe some popcorn and suchlike. As we were just about to pass the Home Depot parking lot entrance, and just before Texas Roadhouse, this kid in this little gold car TURNED IN FRONT OF US AND HIT US HEAD ON, at just under 30mph. He was trying to get to Home Depot because that's where he works and my theory is he was late for work and tried to rush in, rather than sit and wait for traffic. No yielding whatsoever, if I could I would revoke his license on the spot! Anyway, there was nothing we could have done to stop, let alone avoid any sort of collision. We spun out, the airbags deployed, mine hit me square in the glasses and not so much my face as the upper portion of my head, and we spun for what felt like a freaking eternity. My first thought before the collision was "uh-oh", and then my first thought after everything had happened was to make sure Kayla was okay, undo the seatbelts, get out of the car and dial 911. The lock on my door wouldn't work and I'm pretty sure I forced it open from pure adrenaline, as well as some pretty awesome muscles. Haha I wish!
I was already on my phone, and the kid got out of his car and immediately apologized and asked if we were okay. I will admit, at first I wanted to yell and scream at him, ask him why the hell he thought he could just turn in front of us like that, but thankfully my logical side took over and I asked him if he was okay too. The exchanging of insurance information took place while I was on the phone with the police, telling them where we were and what had happened. I didn't say who was at fault or tried to place blame on anyone just then because I was more concerned with getting an accident report on record, and let the cops handle it from there. Turned out to be the right course of action, we got the accident report number on a small scrap of paper and he got the same, with the addition of a large piece of paper as the officer pulled him off to the side.
As far as I know, he still went to work, minus a car.
And yeah, the cars are totaled, I highly doubt Kayla's car will ever be a car again. But we are okay, sure we're banged up and bruised but we are alive, and I will now never want to be on Deerfield ever again.
What I found really weird was how quiet it was after the collision, and during the spinning. My ears were ringing, from the airbag hitting I'm sure, and everything was muted and soft, as though someone messed with the universal equalizer on some all-powerful stereo, and how that immediately stopped after getting the car door open. It was almost like the car had created some kind of sound vacuum.
ANYWAY! We're fine, sore but fine. I am, as previously mentioned, not ever wanting to go out that way ever again, because DAMN that was scary!"

Oh my god, I'm glad you're ok! I had a little bit of a near miss today (yesterday now) when some jackass pulled out in front of me and went over the island in the middle of an elongated roundabout.

Wow. Glad you're alright Yodaman Jer.

My mom and sister and I were once traversing a controlled intersection, over a busy road, from one parking lot into another. We had the green light, and intersecting traffic therefore had a red light. Some fool sped through the red light right as we were crossing through the light. Thankfully, my sister's lightning fast reflexes saved our lives by slamming on the brakes, and all was okay. The other idiot swerved into the parking lot we were headed toward and almost flipped as their left side went over a sidewalk (they were probably doing 50 mph when the ran the red). We continued on into the parking lot and stopped, gathered our surroundings, while the other idiot did the same about 300 feet from us. Then we drove on about our ways.

Here are the photos. Our car was the silver, the one that hit was the gold one.

I still can't believe it. I keep see his front end of the car about to hit us, and then feeling the spin, thinking "oh God this is it" and it keeps playing over and over and over. It's getting really annoying

I mean, I'm sitting here alive, the cars were moving at probably only 25mph, but because of the head-on collision it was the force of 50mph which still could have killed us, or her, or him, or just me or some other combination. It's stupid that it's all done and over with and my brain can still think of this. It's so dumb!

Jeez with everything that's been happening around me lately maybe I should just go build a giant blanket fort, surround myself in bubblewrap and go hide in some safe location for the rest of my life.

That's scary, i'm glad all of you are OK.

Looks like you spun around a lot since the sides of the cars with the damage aren't facing each oter at all
