What?? That's absolutely ridiculous. What are they thinking? Even Apple lets you choose when to update!

Randomness, will that be a deal breaker for you with Windows 10? You are dead set against auto updates, if I recall.

If you have a Pro version of Windows already, the free upgrade is also Pro.

Quote: "Randomness, will that be a deal breaker for you with Windows 10?"

Possibly. The thing I really hate is when things force you to update on their schedule. A program not allowing you to use it until you finish updating it is unacceptable (with some exceptions). The computer automatically restarting is unacceptable. Anything stealing focus to tell you about an update is unacceptable. If something can update automatically without doing those things, I'm OK with it...

...as long as none of the updates are broken.

From what I can tell all versions of Windows 10 will have automatic updates. I have a feeling that will change in the long term though, via an automatic update.

Hopefully, it will be a great OS, no matter what they do to it!

EDIT: Sig test? Sig test. Yes it works.

What I read was that the home version will have automatic forced updates which can't be delayed or turned off, the pro version will have delayable updates which can be delayed 8 months and enterprise will have a long term support version which won't need updates for 10 years (it will probably get security updates though).

You make a very good point randomness, Auto updates arn't that big of an issue if they work as they should which most will. However, since windows needs a reboot to update, it will get very annoying when a new update is released and you 'have' to shut everything off to update.

They've had 3 updates that caused serious issues in the past few months. Those problems were serious enough that they needed to be rolled back and redone. That is enough to stop me from upgrading. Plus all the other stuff brought up in TheComet's thread.

That's not good.

I'm seriously considering setting up my other hard drive in my system with Linux, probably Linux Mint or maybe Kubuntu, whichever one supports AppGameKit better! Then I can use my WIn7 Hard Drive to storegames on and play them that way, and the Linux Hard Drive would be my main use one. I don't play that many games anymore so I doubt I'd miss it too much.

I've always enjoyed using Linux over Windows anyway.

Sounds like linux would be perfect for you then Yoda. There arn't as many games on linux as there are on windows but there is enough to go around and it's a lot nicer for development.

Im pretty sure mint and kubuntu will work equally well with AppGameKit because both are based on ubuntu had I think have the same versions of packages.

I really, REALLY want to like Windows 10 so I'm really hoping Mum's guinea-pig trial of the much-hyped OS goes well

I'll still never move to Linux, though

Our latest Flash Buddies video is out. This time we tried something different and decided to go with an older game that we've always loved: Bomber Man World! It's an old arcade game so we're emulating it on MAME

@Clonkex:

Why didn't you ever tell me Australia had some AMAZING bands in the 80s?

For example, Icehouse:

And Noiseworks:

Midnight Oil I was already aware of, not sure if this song is from the 80s but it's one of my all time favorites:*

*Yes it is, from 1987... all of these songs are from 1987 actually

Any more you know of? I love discovering new music!

-------------------------------------------------------

Brief update on me mum. She's doing amazingly well. Like, you would never guess she underwent massive brain surgery. It's almost scary But VERY relieving! She's been up and about the house almost like normal ( e can't let her overdo it though, or else it's back to the hospital), but I cannot believe how well she's coping/recovering. I also learned that apparently she didn't scream during childbirth at all, or ask for any of the pain medicine (back in '91 when I was being born). In fact she calmly and quietly asked the nurse to close the door so that she could stop listening to the other women screaming down the hall So apparently my mother is superwoman...?

Great to hear the good news!

About birthing stories? Back in 1997, I was birthed by way of a plunger. They literally had to pull me out by adhering a medical plunger to my head. Explains a lot...

Bad news is, I had emergency surgery a couple days ago to remove my appendix.

Good news is, Amazon delivered the rest of the parts to the new computer build I've been saving for all summer! I gotta try and not pop out any staples while I'm putting it together tonight.

Ah. I thought the stomach issues I was dealing with the other night were bad. Sorry to hear that. On the bright side, that will never happen to you again. Unless you have two appendixes. Or unless you are capable of regenerating your appendix. Either case would be quite interesting.

@Yodaman
Why did you pick Kubuntu 14.04 if I may ask? Is that the newest version AppGameKit supports?

Yodaman Jer
User Banned
Posted: 5th Aug 2015 05:02
I wanted to use 15.04 but it just wouldn't work. It's a very buggy release of Kubuntu in general, probably to do with the new Plasma software installed. AppGameKit would compile apps just fine, but they would never launch.

I tried Linux Mint 17.2 as well, but again, it would compile, and not launch. That time I think it had to do with the proprietary drivers not wanting to cooperate.

So, I went with the most recent LTS of Kubuntu, which happened to be 14.04. No problems, everything worked right out of the box, except the part where I butchered the install by forgetting to tell it to wipe Linux Mint off and use the entire disk, so it was trying to boot both...

Thankfully, because Linux only takes ~20 minutes to install, it was an easy fix!

It's okay, I'm doing good now! I think they used gas to expand my stomach so they could more easily remove my appendix, so over the last couple days I've been releasing a lot of gas.

New pc build though! Just finished it a couple hours ago, GTX970, my first 1920x1080 monitor, free Windows 8.1 Professional thanks to being a college student, and despite a few hiccups when doing my first build, everything went relatively smoothly. It was tough bending over the case for so many hours though, since I'm recovering from surgery and all. Doctors said I should be fine as long as I was careful though.

Now, time to download the beefiest game I can find and give my new build a stress test.

So, the Unreal Engine apparently works under Ubuntu/Linux just fine... as long as you're willing to compile it all yourself since Epic haven't released an official client for it yet.

So, guess what I'll be setting up tomorrow? Should be good practice for "linuxing".

Yea, UE4 works pretty well on linux, the only problem I have is that it doesn't really behave well with my window manager. The UE4 editor spawns a ton of child windows for anything from alerts to tooltips when you hover over a button. My WM tries to control all windows and tile them which it can't do with these which makes the main window loose focus and other weird stuff.

Huh, wasn't nearly as hard as I thought. Pretty much just had to run four commands in the terminal and it worked.

It was a time-consuming process though. Took just over an hour for everything, including compiling the shaders for first-time use.

I definitely see what you mean about it not behaving well with window managers. The pop-ups try to come up in a Kubuntu window, freeze for a second, and then update to what they should be.

Now all Epic has to do is create a proper launcher that includes my account and it will be pretty much set for a total Linux release!

Looks like I'll be sticking with Unreal over Unity for sure now!

Did you use multiple threads when compiling? "make -jx" where x is the number of CPU cores.

Meanwhile, my antivirus software has decided to start deleting random DLLs from my python site-packages folder while I was debugging. "Unable to call function because it is no longer on your computer" and other such fun ensued.

Yeah, it probably just took that long because my connection isn't the fastest in town and thus downloading ~3GiB in data probably slowed the process down significantly. Compiling the source itself only took ~15 minutes, nowhere near the hour it originally estimated.

Unfortunately, the version of Unreal I have is 4.8.3, and it seems to be a tad unstable. Attempting to launch the game in its own window crashes the program, and the Blueprint editor is SLOOOOW and sluggish. So it's still got a little ways to go, but it's a huge step in the right direction on Epic's part!

VCD? Video Compact Disk? As in a DVD?

I spent seven hours vividly hallucinating then I woke up and ate the meat of other animals for energy, now I'm going to do something I don’t want to for eight hours for pieces of paper.

Well, before DVD's were a thing. VCD's are older. Literally is a compact disk, just for video, have 800mb capacity and all that malarkey.

I used a VCD once, for a 20 minute video. Didn't look too shabby, at least in those days, but it was quite useless since DVDs were already very mainstream.

VCDs were the only format I was able to get hold of J-Anime at the time :/ the quality was always shabby compared to DVD for obvious reasons lol

And no I am talking before 800MB disks were a thing 650MB these were

I download/stream on average 3.2GB an hour lol or 30-40+GB a day 650MB is a far cry...

Still I much prefer Anime from the 80s/90s era... games too for that matter...
