I agree with Mnemonix about the points system, here are ideas for categories:

Tropical island level(0 or 10 points)
Foliage quality(0-10 points)
Ability to choke people with one hand and shoot(0 or 10 points)
Wide range of nanosuit abilities(0-10 points)
One point for every shader effect used which uses a 3-4 letter acronym(0-60)

If you wanted to do an RPG then retro remakes is still a good idea, simple, just remake your own version of early Zelda, Might and Magic or Final Fantasy. I'm sure retro just doesn't mean arcade games.

If you made an RPG contest you will see 2 or maybe 3 entries. When was the last time a real RPG was made in this community? I've seen lots in development but none actually finished. Compound this with a tight contest schedule and you'll be hard pressed to see anyone complete one.

Just a retro free-for-all would be a good idea, and put in a restriction that the game must have been started after the contest was announced (honour system).

I'm definitely interested in helping out with this project, whether it be judging or just participating in general. Count me in for judging if my services are need.

------------------------------------
I agree that the competitions should begin at a much smaller scale and slowly alternate in a few bigger projects. But as Jeku said, it is rare(although very cool) that we see a finished RPG.

YOU HAVE INTRIGUED THE PUS!

I would be interested in judging sometime, as I thrive on critique and review. But at the same time, a retro contest would be the perfect opportunity for me to unleash one of my best game ideas ever onto the community. Self-promotions aside, please contact me if you need a judge sometime.

EDIT: Almost forgot, does this include FPSC games?

Feigning interest since 2005!

Retro remakes or Retro inspired games seem like a good starting place for the abilities of most people on this board.

Out of interest what kind of prizes are we looking at?

Some of the DBPro plugins would be nice

What does anyone think about making modern versions of Retro-influenced games? For example, rather than just remaking Lunar Lander in the original style, you would make it with real physics and particle effects.

I had some ideas a while ago that I thought would ensure it was a fairly run contest.

I will write them up a bit later too busy at the moment.

Hmmm... Maybe a super mario spin-off compo... But then again, that may fall under retro remakes...

I guess my vote is to retro remakes!

I vote for retro remakes, though with the ability to use DBC 1.2 as well as DBP, seeing as it runs in Vista.
Otherwise I wont enter, as I don't want to try and learn all the differences of DBP just for a compo.

I like the idea of making retro remake games with a new twist to them though.
And I should be able to enter as long as it starts after march.

How far back do we have to go before a game can count as "retro"?

More precisely, what counts as "retro"?

I'm with Green Gandalf here, I want to know too. I'm under the impression that it's 16-bit and below though, or is it just 8-bit?

retro is 70's in original meaning

but now dictionary says:

ret·ro (rĕt'rō
adj.
Retroactive: retro pay.
Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past; retrospective: “As is often the case in retro fashion, historical accuracy is somewhat beside the point” (New York Times).
n., pl. -ros.
A fashion, decor, design, or style reminiscent of things past.

We haven't finalized any competition theme yet, so its impossible to discuss that .

Having said that, I would suggest that any kind of retro game that your fond of would be allowed, 8 bit, 16 bit or 32 bit (since 32 could be considered retro by some now).

All you will probably have to do is suggest the idea, then we might be able to ok it or no'kay it

Remember though, nothing is decided yet.

I would suggest retro throughout generations, not bits...

Are GBA games (32bit) retro?
Playstation (32) and Nintendo64 are from the same generation...

@ Jeku

Lots to organise yet. A lot of it isn't in our (the judges) hands and has been handed to TGC to decide. Then we have to get some prizes sorted and a website up.

Watch this space though.

Retro I think greatly depends on how old you are, for me retro is Arcade, C64, Spectrum, ST, Amiga, and the 16-bit consoles. Games that we can't really get these days.

32 Bit though, I mean what consoles were 32 bit, and what games are actually worthwhile to remake .

I think there should be a destinct guideline, maybe just any game made before 1998, then it could be a standard 10 year old thing, if a game is more than 10 years old then it's retro perhaps. Personally I like to concentrate on older games, games that I can run on an emulator on my DS, Speccy games are ideal for this.

Personally I'd say 16-bit and earlier, and then you can safely include PC games (i,e, DOS-based games). The PSone and the Sega Saturn were 32-bit, and I'd consider them to not be retro yet personally. Also, the 64-bit N64 was the same generation, and that would be excluded if we went for 32-bit.

Tech demos would mean people would have to concentrate very strongly on graphics and audio, which isn't the point of a programming competition.

Ah, thank you for clearing up the definition of retro . I guess kBessa and VanB are right that retro should be defined by generation/era or year.

Anyway, are we going to go with the retro theme for the competition? It seems that it gets many peoples votes. I'm all for it, if you guys are too. I enjoyed a number of old games mostly from DOS and the SNES.

To whom do we submit our proposal for validation? Or how about we take nominations and decide it via a poll.

I like the idea of retro.

I've always wanted to remake two games I used to play all the time - Snake Rattle 'n' Roll and Marble Madness - using a physics sdk

I think vouchers would be of greater use, you could exchange for any product on TGC, or for discount or free entry to the convention. I think everyone would be happier

As far as I know TGC doesn't host or pay for the convention--- it's usually arranged by a private 3rd party (BatVink, OSX Using Happy Dude, etc.)

The first official convention, hosted and organised by TGC (With the help of one Mrs. Batvink) took place in October last year. Rick Vanner hinted at the possibility of another, so the idea of using this as a prize is somewhat plausible.

I like the retro idea.

Rather than just saying retro maybe a decade can be chosen? Like maybe the 80's?

The issue with a free convention entry prize is that all TGC/the organisers are doing is acting as a single point of payment for everyone. The money paid is only the convention centre/accommodation costs.

Perhaps the earlier half of the 1990's should be included as well for people who wants to remake Doom and other games at that time.

I don't think Doom quite qualifies as 'Retro' when talking about a retro-remakes compo.

Fair enough.
I still wouldn't classify it as quite retro enough.

At any rate, that's probably one of the distinctions that the judges need to address when laying down the rules
